The Grammy Award for Best Rock Album , in German "Grammy Award for the best rock album", is a music prize that has been awarded at the annual Grammy Awards since 1995 . It is awarded for outstanding musicians albums of rock music .

Background and story

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards), which have been presented since 1958, are presented annually in numerous categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) in the United States of America for artistic achievement, technical competence and excellent overall performance regardless of the album - Honor sales or chart position.

The Grammy Award for Best Rock Album was first given in 1995 to the band The Rolling Stones for the album Voodoo Lounge and has been one of the annually awarded prizes in the field of rock music ever since. According to the criteria of the Grammy Awards 2010 , it is awarded for vocal and instrumental albums from the fields of rock, hard rock and metal with a minimum of 51% of the total playing time of newly recorded material. Since 1996, in addition to performing artists, music producers , sound engineers and other album staff have been part of the award ceremony .

The band Foo Fighters has won this award four times to date, topping the list of Grammy winners in this category. At the same time, they were the most frequent with six nominations. Neil Young was nominated six times, including one with Crazy Horse , but has never won the award. Sheryl Crow , Green Day and U2 have each won the award twice. The most common prizes were given to American artists, but U2's two wins have already gone twice to Irish artists and four times to British artists with the Rolling Stones, Coldplay and Muse (two times). In addition, Carlos Santana as a Mexican artist and Alanis Morissette as a Canadian artist won the award.
