Grammy Award for Song of the Year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grammy Award for Song of the Year (dt. Grammy Award for Song of the Year ) is a music award, considered one of the four major prizes at the annual since 1959 Grammy Awards will be awarded. As with the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, this prize is awarded to a recording of a single or an album track of particularly high quality made in the previous year of the award ceremony. In contrast to the Record of the Year, only the composers of the song are awarded, not the performers.

Background and story

The Grammy Awards (actually Grammophone Awards) have been presented annually since 1959 for artistic achievement, technical competence and overall musical achievement in various categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), regardless of the number of sales of the work. The Grammy Award for Song of the Year has been an integral part of the award ceremony since the first Grammy award in 1959. In addition to the prizes for the best album , the best recording and the best newcomer, it is one of the four most important awards presented.

This category is not to be confused with the Grammy Award for Record of the Year . While the quality of the songwriting is in the foreground at the award ceremony for the song of the year , the recording of the year places emphasis on the quality of the recording. In addition, only the composer receives an award in the Song of the Year category, while the Single of the Year category also honors the producer and sound engineer. Award-winning songs must contain melody and vocals and have been created or become known as a new song in the previous year. Songs with conspicuous and known samples or interpolations are not marked.

Since the late 1960s, other genre-specific awards for songs have been awarded, including categories such as the Grammy Award for Best Country Song , Grammy Award for Best Rock Song , Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and, in recent years, the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song and the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Song .

particularities

Of the songs that won awards in this category, 29 also received the Grammy Award for Record of the Year that same year . At 16 awards, the composers and songwriters were also the performers: Domenico Modugno , Paul Simon , Christopher Cross , Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie , Billy Joel , Bobby McFerrin , Eric Clapton , Seal , Shawn Colvin & John Leventhal , James Horner , U2 , the Dixie Chicks , Amy Winehouse , Coldplay , Lady Antebellum , Adele and Lorde .

Christopher Cross was the first artist to receive the Grammy Award for Song of the Year together with the Grammy Award for Record of the Year , the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in one ceremony. Only four artists received the Grammy Song of the Year and Best New Artist in the same year: Christopher Cross (1981), Alicia Keys (2002), Amy Winehouse (2008) and Fun. (2013).

Several songwriters and composers have received the Grammy twice, including Henry Mancini (1962 and 1964), James Horner (1988 and 1999) and U2 (2001 and 2006; the only non-American winners with more than one award). In addition, different songwriters who wrote songs for the artists Andy Williams , Bette Midler and Roberta Flack won the song twice. The first winner in this category, the song Nel blu dipinto di blu sung in Italian by Domenico Modugno in 1959, is the only foreign-language song that has received an award in this category so far. Although the award was mainly given to American artists, it also went to artists from Italy, Austria, Ireland, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
