In Trance is the third studio album by the German hard rock band Scorpions , which was released in 1975. The album marked the beginning of a special era, as the band recorded an album here for the first time under the direction of producer Dieter Dierks and they began a business relationship that would last until the end of the following decade. In trance marked the breakthrough in Japan for the band.

Origin, characteristics and meaning

Production history

After the Scorpions produced their second album Fly to the Rainbow (1974) independently, it was time for the band to look for a suitable producer for their subsequent record productions. Eventually they met Dieter Dierks and a little later signed a longer contract that had tied the Scorpions to the native Pulheimer for the following years . Also was in a trance also the first album with the Belgian Rudy Lenners behind the drums.

Musical style

Compared to the musical development from the debut album to Fly to the Rainbow , the development towards In Trance is rather minor. The influence of producer Dierks only causes the even more "commercial" orientation of the songs, which is noticeable in terms of the song lengths, since such extensive songs as the respective title tracks of the two previous albums are completely missing, instead the titles keep a fairly even song structure and have hence similar song lengths. As on the previous album, guitarist Uli Roth can be heard as a singer. This time on the songs Dark Lady and Sun in My Hand , both of which were also written by him. With the song Night Lights , the band's first purely instrumental song is also included. The piece was also composed by guitarist Uli Jon Roth. Rather untypical for a Scorpions album (if you also include the works that follow later), this album ends with a somewhat more “turbulent” than most of the band's other albums instead of a quiet ballad. The penultimate track Longing for Fire is still a merciless rocker, the final track Night Lights is just a short instrumental ballad.

Album cover

The original album cover was photographed by Michael von Gimbut and shows a young woman who appears to be sitting on an electric guitar. The original print of this cover shows the woman's bare breast, while in a censored version, which was more often used for later publications, these are covered with black lamination. This was the band's first cover to be censored. Former Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth claimed in an interview in 2008 that he probably had the idea for the cover. However, he also said that this and other cover of the band's albums were the idea of the record company and the band had not rejected it. “These covers were probably the most embarrassing thing I've ever been involved in,” said Roth in the same interview. He also described the cover as "borderline". The guitar shown on the cover belongs to Uli Jon Roth and is the same one that was later shown on the cover of the Electric Sun album Fire Wind (1980).

Tour and sales

The album became one of the best-selling rock albums in Japan. Over a million copies of the album were sold worldwide. The band toured Europe for the first time in 1975 and 1976, opening up for The Sweet . Appearances in the Liverpool Cavern Club as well as in the London Marquee Club made the band known in England. They later played 30 concerts in the UK.
