List of songs by the Scorpions
This list includes all the songs that were recorded by the German hard rock band Scorpions , which was founded in 1965 . All known recordings from 1972 to 2020 are included here, i.e. a period of almost 50 years in which the band released more than 250 different pieces of music. In addition, guest contributions for video and sound carriers by other artists as well as songs that have not been officially released so far, which can be found on the Internet or only on bootleg publications, are also included in a separate list .
overview
The majority of all songs were released on the group's 18 studio albums (as of May 2020) , from their debut album Lonesome Crow (1972) to their current studio album Return to Forever (2015). In the course of their more than 50-year career, the Scorpions have published many of their songs in several versions, for example some remixes of their ballads on the remix album Still Loving You (1992), as orchestral versions in collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker ( Moment of Glory , 2000), as acoustic and unplugged versions on the concert albums Acoustica (2001) and MTV Unplugged (2013) or completely new recordings of older songs, such as on their album Comeblack (2011). In order to quickly get a more precise overview of the songs and their various versions, they are shown in the list in the "Versions" field with the version name and year of publication.
Furthermore, the group has made some songs available exclusively on certain compilations (example: Love Is Blind was released in 1999 exclusively on the best-of album Best ) or as bonus tracks on certain versions of their albums only available in selected countries (see, for example, various Bonus tracks from the album Face the Heat , 1993). Previously unreleased songs, so-called non-album tracks , as B-sides on maxi singles, as is often the case with other bands, the Scorpions, however, compared to the large number of their single releases, offered comparatively seldom. An example of this is the song Rubber Fucker , which appeared on the single Alien Nation in 1993 before the corresponding album Face the Heat was released. Since this title was not included again on the album, this is an exclusive B-side of this single, i.e. a non-album track .
In addition, this list also includes titles that only individual band members contributed to as part of their membership in the Scorpions, such as the guest contributions to Avantasia by Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker. Guest contributions by ex-band members are not included here, only collaborations between band members during their membership in the Scorpions are counted. This also excludes reinterpretations of older Scorpions songs, which were published later , especially by Uli Jon Roth (ex-guitarist) and Herman Rarebell (ex-drummer).
However, there are also other cover versions of some Scorpions titles by other artists, on which one or more band members themselves also participated. Due to the connection to the Scorpions, these recordings are also included in this list. As long as not all five band members were involved, these versions are only listed as a guest contribution in the second table, as this merely represents a cooperation with another artist instead of a reinterpretation by the band itself.
A special example is the UFO cover Doctor Doctor - a song that was not originally written by the band itself. Despite the fact that the band had occasionally played it at concerts in the past, a first live recording of this title by the Scorpions themselves was finally released in 2009 (together with Michael Schenker as a guest). Consequently, this was the first time that the song was released in an official Scorpions interpretation on a phonogram by the band itself. However, a version of the title appeared on a live album of the Michael Schenker Group 25 years earlier , in which only singer Klaus Meine and guitarist Rudolf Schenker were guests. Therefore, the song can also be found in the second list in this version, since it is a guest contribution instead of an official Scorpions interpretation.
Statistics of the songs
The three most famous songs of the Scorpions, which mostly form the encores in the group's live program, are the two ballads Still Loving You (1984) and Wind of Change (1990) and the rock anthem Rock You Like a Hurricane (1984).
The band's most commercially successful single is Wind of Change , which became a worldwide hit in 1991. It was considered the so-called “ hymn of the turnaround ” in the media , as it came out during a period of political change, for example in Germany and Russia, and thus reflected the zeitgeist of change at the time. Wind of Change is also the most successful single from German production, the Hamburger Abendblatt, for example, is assuming more than 14 million singles sold worldwide. The song is not only the band's only number one hit in Germany , but together with the follow-up single Send Me an Angel, it is also the only Scorpions song to reach the top 10 in Germany.
The band's most frequently played live song is The Zoo (1980), followed by Rock You Like a Hurricane (1984) and Big City Nights (1984), all of which have been played live by the band well over 1,000 times.
The group's longest song to date appeared on their first album Lonesome Crow . This is the 13:31 minute long title track from 1972. The shortest track in the band's history, however, is the live recording of the Elvis Presley title Hound Dog , which is 1:14 minutes long on the live Album Tokyo Tapes was released in 1978. If you only allow studio recordings for this assessment, the shortest title of the Scorpions, on the other hand, is the currently most recent track Sign of Hope (2020), which is only 2:16 minutes long.
The band's songs are always written in English, although the band's mother tongue is German . There are only a few exceptions: The two sweet cover songs Fuchs go ahead and When it really starts (1975) and the song You are so dirty (and yet so beautiful) (1999), which also contains English verses, are written in german. The song appeared on their most controversial album, Eye II Eye , but there is also an all-English version called Start Me Up . In the otherwise completely English-language song Humanity (2007), the second line of text also contains a German “goodbye”.
The song Destin contains a French line in the chorus with “Mon destin inscrit en toi”. As in the Japanese interpretation of the same song with the title Kami O Shin Jiru , the rest of the song is still written in English. The song Ave Maria No Morro is a cover version in Portuguese, while the songs Kōjō no Tsuki and Kimi Ga Yo are sung entirely in Japanese. With a guest appearance at a concert recording by the Hungarian band Omega, singer Klaus Meine (also with Rudolf Schenker on guitar) even made contact with the Hungarian language, in which he sang two of the band's songs in their local language, following a common one Live performance of the Scorpions hit Wind of Change . In addition to the English version on the album Crazy World , this song was recorded in a Russian and Spanish version just one year after the single was released in spring 1991 and marketed as an independent single. And the ballad Still Loving You was also adapted in 2011 with Amandine Bourgeois as a French version under the title Je t'aime encore .
The song Still Loving You is also the one that was published in most different versions of all Scorpions titles (10 pieces).
The list also includes 98 Schenker / Meine compositions. These are songs for which only Rudolf Schenker composed the music, while Klaus Meine alone wrote the text. So this makes up more than a third of all Scorpions songs, as there are a total of 268 songs.
It also includes 13 instrumental pieces, but only two of them were officially released on a studio album. Night Lights (1975) and Coast to Coast (1979) are purely instrumental compositions by the band that were recorded in the studio. The title Deadly Sting Suite , a collaboration with the Berliner Philharmoniker, is just an instrumental combination of the songs He's a Woman - She's a Man (1977) and Dynamite (1982). This also appeared in a studio version on the album Moment of Glory (2000). The remaining instrumental pieces are mainly guitar and drum solos that have been released on various sound or video carriers from concerts or the first demos for already known albums (see for example Love at First Sting - 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition ).
Most of the band's songs were produced by Dieter Dierks , who produced not only 8 studio albums between 1975 and 1988, but also the two live albums Tokyo Tapes (1978) and World Wide Live (1985). From 2010 to 2017 all recordings of the Scorpions were produced by the two Swedish producers Mikael Nord Anderson and Martin Hansen.
And one more coincidental absurdity at the end: all songs with titles starting with U ( Under the Same Sun and Unholy Alliance ) were released on the Face the Heat album, while the band had never released songs with their name before the last album begin with G. This only changed in 2015, with the two songs Going Out with a Bang and Gypsy Life , the first and final title on the standard edition of the current studio album Return to Forever .
List of Scorpions songs
This list currently includes 269 different songs. Songs in their first studio recording or publication are primarily listed here. Songs, such as various bonus tracks from the 50th Anniversary Deluxe Editions , which were recorded in the 70s or 80s, but were not officially made available until 2015 and only released as demo versions, are accordingly released on CD in the year of their first release / LP, i.e. 2015. If these demos go back to previously published compositions, however, these demos are indicated under "Versions" as an alternative interpretation with the corresponding year of publication. Any earlier publications of various titles on bootlegs are not taken into account here, as these are only supposed to be officially released publications.
Titles that were only performed at concerts or that only exist as live recordings on audio media (including various guitar and drum solos, provided that they have been officially given their own title), are only listed in their first publication on video or audio media , even if the song may have been presented at concerts much earlier.
This list does not include pieces that usually form their own title on live albums, but are not a song, just an intro or a transition. This affects the titles Countdown ( World Wide Live , 1985; Live at Madison Square Garden , 2015); Ready to Sting ( Live at Wacken Open Air 2006 , 2007); Ladies and Gentlemen ( Live 2011: Get Your Sting & Blackout , 2011) as well as various intros from concert recordings on USB sticks ( Get Your Sting and Blackout Tour , 2010).
The songs that have been released as single in one or more countries are shown in bold in this list.
Note: The list can be sorted: By clicking on a column header, the list is sorted according to this column, clicking twice reverses the sorting. Any desired combination can be achieved by successively clicking on two columns.
