James Roosevelt

James Roosevelt (born December 23, 1907 in New York City , NY - † August 13, 1991 in Newport Beach , California ) was a Brigadier General of the US Marine Corps and the son of US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt .

Life

James Roosevelt completed his school education in 1926. He then attended Harvard University and received his doctorate in 1930. His military career began on November 13, 1936, when Roosevelt was in the US Reserve . Joined Marine Corps. He held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at the time . On November 7, 1940, James Roosevelt entered active service. He commanded the 2nd Battalion , 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division . During World War II he commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Marine Raiders, a special unit of the Marine Corps. The unit took part in the fighting for the Gilbert Islands in August 1942. James Roosevelt was awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery after the battle . The promotion to colonel took place in April 1944. In the further course of the Pacific War he took part in the Battle of Okinawa . In addition to the Navy Cross, he was also awarded the Silver Star . In October 1945, the Marine Corps transferred him to the reserve after five years of service. In 1959 James Roosevelt was promoted to Brigadier General of the Reserve.

James Roosevelt married four times in his life. His first marriage was to Betsey Cushing . After the divorce in 1940, he married Romelle Schneider the following year. After another divorce, he married Irene Owens in 1956. In 1969 he married Mary Winskill, the fourth marriage. There are seven children from the four marriages:

James Roosevelt died in 1991 at the age of 83 from complications from a stroke and Parkinson's disease in Newport Beach.

Post war career

His political career began with the nomination by the Democratic Party for the office of governor of California . However, he lost the election of 1950 to the Republican incumbent Earl Warren with 64 to 35 percent of the vote. He then took part in the November 1954 congressional elections and was elected to the 84th United States Congress as a member of the 26th District of California. He was a member of the US House of Representatives continuously until his resignation on September 30, 1965; earlier that year he had run unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for Los Angeles mayor . He then served as US envoy to the United Nations Economic and Social Council until December 1966 .

Roosevelt resigned from this position in December 1966 to become an executive at Investors Overseas Services (IOS) in Geneva . He took this step despite the US Securities and Exchange Commission's investigation into IOS on suspicion of numerous irregularities. He stayed with the company even after Robert Vesco took control and set off for about $ 200 million. Roosevelt later wrote: "As soon as I saw the situation as it was, I resigned in 1971. However, charges were brought against Roosevelt and several others. Roosevelt returned to California and settled in Newport Beach. The charges were dropped calmly.

Despite being a lifetime Democrat, Roosevelt joined the Democrats for Nixon and supported Republican candidate Nixon in 1972. He also supported Republican candidate Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.
