William Adam Piper

William Adam Piper (born May 21, 1826 in Franklin County , Pennsylvania , †  August 5, 1899 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Piper attended public schools in his home country. He then moved to St. Louis , Missouri . During the Mexican-American War , he served in an artillery unit from Missouri in 1846 and 1847 . During the gold rush , he moved to California in 1848, where he settled in San Francisco and worked in commerce. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1874 congressional election , Piper was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of California , where he succeeded Charles Clayton on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Piper resumed his previous trading activities. He died on August 5, 1899 in San Francisco, where he was also buried.
