Laura Richardson (born April 14, 1962 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . From 2007 to 2013 she represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives ; she lost her seat in the 2012 election , in which she was defeated by her democratic competitor Janice Hahn .

Career

Laura Richardson studied at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1984 and then at the University of Southern California until 1996 . In the meantime she worked for the company Xerox for 14 years . At the same time she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1996 and 1998 she was on the staff of Congressman Juanita Millender-McDonald . From 2000 to 2006 she was on the Long Beach City Council ; she also worked for Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante between 2001 and 2006 . She was a member of the California State Assembly in 2006 and 2007 .

After the death of Juanita Millender-McDonald, Laura Richardson was elected as her successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where she took up her new mandate on September 4, 2007, when she was due for the 37th seat of California . She was re-elected twice and lost her seat in the November 2012 congressional election, after which she left office on January 3, 2013. In the House of Representatives, she was a member of the Committee on Homeland Security , the Committee on Transport and Infrastructure and five sub-committees. She was also a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus .

Ms. Richardson's career in Congress had its downsides. On August 1, 2012, the Ethics Committee found her guilty of violating federal law, Congressional regulations, and obstructing the Ethics Committee's investigation. It was about the illegal use of their staff for election campaign purposes. She was fined $ 10,000 and officially reprimanded by Congress. She had already hit the headlines because of alleged preferential treatment at a bank. In this case she was acquitted by the ethics committee.

Richardson is divorced and has her private residence in Long Beach.
