Lawrence J. Flaherty
Lawrence James Flaherty (born July 4, 1878 in San Mateo , California , † June 13, 1926 in New York City ) was an American politician . In 1925 and 1926 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1888, Lawrence Flaherty came to San Francisco with his parents , where he attended public schools. He then completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in concrete construction. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1911 and 1915, Flaherty served on the San Francisco City Police Committee; from 1915 to 1922 he was a member of the California Senate . From November 1921 to March 3, 1925, he headed the federal customs service in the port of San Francisco.
In the 1924 congressional election , Flaherty was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of California , where he succeeded Mae Nolan on March 4, 1925 . However, he could no longer end his legislative term in Congress, which ran until March 3, 1927 , as he died on June 13, 1926 in New York. His mandate fell to Richard J. Welch after a special election .
