Warren B. English

Warren Barkley English (born May 1, 1840 in Charlestown , Jefferson County , Virginia , †  January 9, 1913 in Santa Rosa , California ) was an American politician . In 1894 and 1895 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now West Virginia , Warren English attended public schools in his homeland as well as the Charlestown Academy . During the Civil War he served in the Confederation Army . After the war he moved to Oakland , California. In his new home he graduated from the California Military Academy . He then began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1877 and 1881 he was a member of the county council in Contra Costa County ; in 1882 he was elected to the California Senate. In July 1884 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where Grover Cleveland was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In a congressional by-election, English lost to Republican Samuel G. Hilborn . However, he appealed against the outcome of the election. When this was granted, he was able to take up his seat in Congress on April 4, 1894 . But since he lost to Hilborn in 1894, he could only end the current legislative period until March 3, 1895. After retiring from the US House of Representatives, Warren English worked in the Oakland real estate business. Since 1905 he dealt in Sonoma County with the viticulture. He died in Santa Rosa on January 9, 1913 and was buried in Oakland.
