John E. Coffee

John E. Coffee (born December 3, 1782 in Prince Edward County , Virginia , † September 25, 1836 in Jacksonville , Georgia ) was an American general and congressman for the state of Georgia. He is often confused with General John R. Coffee , his first cousin.

Georgia-born Coffee and his father moved to a plantation near Powelton in Hancock County in 1800 . In 1807 he became a farmer in Telfair County . As a general in the Georgia militia , he organized the construction of a road through Georgia to bring ammunition across the state to the Florida Territory and to fight the Indians during the Creek War . The road ran from Jacksonville to Tallahassee in Florida and is known as the Old Coffee Road .

Coffee was a member of the Georgia Senate from 1819 to 1827 . As a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party , he was elected to the 23rd and 24th Congresses of the United States . He was a member of the House of Representatives from March 4, 1833 until his death on September 25, 1836 . On October 3, 1836, he was elected to the 25th Congress ; the news of his death had not yet reached them.

Coffee died on his plantation near Jacksonville and was initially buried there. In 1921 he was reburied in McRae , Georgia Cemetery.

Commemoration

In addition to Old Coffee Road , Georgia Coffee County and General Coffee State Park were named after him.
