Milton A. Candler

Milton Anthony Candler (born January 11, 1837 in Campbellton , Fulton County , Georgia , †  August 8, 1909 in Decatur , Georgia) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the state of Georgia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Milton Candler was an uncle of Ezekiel S. Candler (1862-1944), who was a Congressman for the State of Mississippi between 1901 and 1921 . He was also a cousin of Allen D. Candler (1834-1910), who sat for Georgia in Congress from 1883 to 1891 and served as governor of the state from 1898 to 1902 .

Candler was educated in private schools and then studied until 1854 at the University of Georgia in Athens . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1856, he began to work in Cassville in his new profession. In 1857 he moved his residence and his office to Decatur. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1861 and 1863 he was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives . After the Civil War ended , Candler served on the Georgia Constitution Revision Congregation in 1865. Between 1868 and 1872 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1872 and 1876 Candler was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the congressional election of 1874 , Milton Candler was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Georgia , where he succeeded James C. Freeman on March 4, 1875 . After a re-election in 1876, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he was nominated again by his party. Candler turned down the nomination because of political differences over the currency issue. After leaving the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. Candler died in Decatur on August 8, 1909.
