Mersin (formerly İçel , Kurdish Mêrsîn ) is a province of Turkey on the Mediterranean coast . Their capital is Mersin . Until June 28, 2002, the province was named İçel.

The province has 1,773,852 inhabitants (as of 2016) on an area of ​​15,737 km². The road number is 33. It borders on Antalya Province to the west, Adana to the east and Konya , Karaman and Niğde to the north .

The population density is around 113 inhabitants / km². 61% of the population live in cities.

Mersin belongs to ancient Cilicia .

Counties

Mersin has been a large city (Büyükşehir belediyesi) since 1993. After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Mersin.
