The Turkish province of Muğla [ ˈmuːla ] is located in the extreme southwest of Asia Minor . It represents the heart of ancient Caria and has a population of 923,773 people (as of 2016), of which around 62,000 live in the provincial capital of the same name, Muğla .
The province of Muğla borders on the province of Aydın in the north, Denizli and Burdur in the northeast and Antalya in the east . It forms a strip of about 50 × 250 km opposite the coast off Rhodes , where it bends with three protruding peninsulas in a strip from the Aegean Sea (Ege Denizi) into the eastern Mediterranean .
Economically, tourism is the most important for the region , especially on the Bodrum peninsula . The carpet manufacturers, some ancient sites or museums and the local bazaars are also important .
Good transport connections are - despite the predominantly steep coast - given by shipping and from the north by the streets of İzmir and Aydın . There are airports with international connections in Dalaman and Bodrum .
On the heavily indented coast south of the city of Muğla are the ancient ruined cities of Kerme, Knidos , Telmessos ( Fethiye ) and Kaunos . Some necropolises with the high-rise sarcophagi typical of Caria are also known .
Counties
Muğla has been a city since 2012 (Büyükşehir belediyesi). After an administrative reform in 2014, all districts are directly subordinate to the Lord Mayor of Muğla. The former mayors of the municipalities ( Belediye ) were downgraded to the rank of Muhtar . Therefore, the 13 districts are also urban districts:
