Moncenisio ( Piedmontese Monsnis , Franco-Provencal Moueini ) is a municipality in the Italian metropolitan city of Turin (TO), Piedmont region . With 33 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) it is the smallest municipality in Piedmont and, together with Morterone, one of the two smallest in Italy.

Moncenisio is a member of the mountain commune Comunità Montana Alta Valle di Susa . The neighboring municipalities are Val-Cenis (France), Novalesa and Venaus .

geography

The place is at an altitude of 1460  m slm , only a few hundred meters south of the border with France on the old pass road to the Col du Mont Cenis pass of the same name .

history

The municipality was originally called Ferrera . In connection with the expansion of the dams on Lake Mont-Cenis in the 1960s, the name was changed to Moncenisio .
