Neven Subotić [ ˈněʋen ˈsûbotitɕ ] ( Serbian - Cyrillic Невен Суботић ; born December 10, 1988 in Banja Luka , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian-Serbian professional football player . He is under contract with 1. FC Union Berlin . Subotić was a national player for the Serbian national team for several years .

biography

Subotić was born in Banja Luka in what is now Bosnia and Herzegovina . His father Zeljko was born in Kulaši and his mother Svjetlana in Brestovo. His parents moved to Germany with him and his sister in 1990 . The family initially lived in Schömberg in the Pforzheim area , where he played from the F-youth to the D-youth at TSV Schwarzenberg there. In 1999 he moved with his parents to Salt Lake City in the United States to avoid deportation to Bosnia and Herzegovina. There he played in various clubs.

Subotić is committed to the Kinderlachen association as an ambassador. In 2012 he founded the Neven Subotic Foundation , which carries out well construction projects in Ethiopia and was awarded the Silver Rose Award 2019 in the European Parliament .

Subotić is fluent in German , Serbian and English . He has German, Serbian and US citizenship .

Club career

1. FSV Mainz 05

Subotić moved from the college team of the University of South Florida in 2006 to the Bundesliga club 1. FSV Mainz 05 , where he was initially used in the central defense of the league team, and occasionally also in the A-Juniors.

On the last day of the 2006/07 season, Subotić made his debut with the 05 professionals in the away game at Bayern Munich . Due to the injury of Bo Svensson , he played himself at the beginning of the 2007/08 season as a central defender alongside Nikolče Noveski in the starting line-up. In total, he completed 33 of the 34 possible games in his first full season as a professional and scored four goals.

Borussia Dortmund

For the 2008/09 season Subotić followed his coach Jürgen Klopp to Borussia Dortmund and signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2013. On his debut in the game at Bayer Leverkusen (3-2 for Dortmund) he scored his first goal for BVB with a header to make it 3-1. After the departure of Christian Wörns and Robert Kovač , Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp relied on the two 19-year-old central defenders Neven Subotić and Mats Hummels in the 2008/09 season . In the press, this was first mocked as a “child's bar”. In fact, BVB conceded only 37 goals with the new defensive duo and thus the second few in the Bundesliga. In the previous season with the veterans Wörns and Kovač, who in turn was ridiculed in the press as "grandpa defense", they had the worst defense in the Bundesliga with 62 goals conceded.

In the 2010/11 season , the defensive duo Hummels / Subotić even had the best defense in the league, this time with 22 goals conceded. With Borussia he became German champion . In his first two years, Subotić only missed three games due to a yellow card and a yellow-red card suspension. In the first round of the 2011/12 season Subotić fell due to a mid-face fracture of one month. Almost a year after the championship, he was with Borussia Dortmund on the 32nd matchday of the 2011/12 season for the second time in his career German champion. In the 2013/14 season , Subotić suffered a torn cruciate ligament and ankle ligament in his right knee on matchday 12 in the away game against VfL Wolfsburg and was out for about half a year.

Loan to 1. FC Köln

For the second half of the 2016/17 season Subotić moved to 1. FC Köln on loan until the end of the season . He made his debut for Cologne on February 12, 2017 (20th matchday) in the 1: 2 away defeat against SC Freiburg . He was used in the second half of the season in 12 of 16 possible games and mostly formed the central defense with Frederik Sørensen . After the season, his expiring loan contract was not extended.

AS Saint-Etienne

On January 25, 2018, he joined AS Saint-Étienne and signed a contract that runs until 2019. He made his debut for the French record champions two days after signing on January 27, 2018 (23rd matchday) in a 2-1 home win at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard against SM Caen . In his seventh league game he scored his first goal with the opening goal in the 1-1 draw against Stade Rennes . He played a total of 42 games (3 goals) in Ligue 1.

Union Berlin

For the 2019/20 season he joined Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Union Berlin on a free transfer and achieved relegation with the team. His contract runs until 2021.

National team

He played from the U-17 to the U-20 in US youth national teams; for the latter, he played two games and scored no goal.

He turned down an offer from the Bosnian Football Association and decided in 2009 to play for the Serbian national football team . Subotić made his debut in the Serbian national team on March 28, 2009 in the World Cup qualifier against Romania , which Serbia won 3-2. He scored his first goal for Serbia in a 2-0 win on June 10, 2009 against the Faroe Islands . By 2013 he had completed 36 international matches and scored a total of two goals.
