Victorious [ vɪkˈtɔrˈiˈəs ] ( English victorious "victorious") is an American teen sitcom that tells of the everyday lives and adventures of seven students at the Hollywood Arts drama school in Los Angeles . Victorious is intended as a funny and personable series to authentically reflect the experiences and dreams of the target group. The series was developed by Dan Schneider , who was previously involved in the productions of iCarly , Zoey 101 and Drake & Josh .

The first episode was broadcast on March 27, 2010 by the US television station Nickelodeon . The German-language first broadcast took place on August 29, 2010 on Nickelodeon Germany . On August 10, 2012, the series was discontinued after four seasons and 60 episodes. The series finale aired in the United States on February 2, 2013.

Despite some negative reviews, the series received, among other things, two nominations for the Emmy Award for best children's show. Critics particularly praised the performance of the leading actress Victoria Justice . In 2013, Sam & Cat started a spin-off to Victorious and iCarly , in which Ariana Grande and Jennette McCurdy resumed their roles from these same series.

action

The series tells of seven students from the fictional private high school "Hollywood Arts" in Los Angeles , which teaches, among other things, acting , dance and singing for artistically gifted students. The focus is on 16-year-old Tori Vega, who has to cope with everyday life at the drama school together with her friends.

The action begins on the day of a talent event held by Hollywood Arts. Tori appears instead of her sister Trina and is allowed to attend Hollywood Arts because of her convincing performance. In the following episodes, Tori and her new found friends plunge into funny and often bizarre adventures.

The consequences are self-contained and at the end essentially return to the initial situation. Connection errors are also accepted here.

characters

A concert appearance by the main cast of the series in May 2011

The main characters of Victorious are seven high school students from Hollywood Arts. This group of people consists of the protagonist Tori Vega, her friends André Harris, Robbie Shapiro, Cat Valentine, Beck Oliver and Toris Rivalin, Jade West and Trina Vega, Tori's sister. The plot of the individual episodes mostly relates to the main character, although the focus of individual stories is sometimes on other characters.

Tori Vega

Tori Vega is new to Hollywood Arts at the beginning of the series. So far she grew up in the shadow of her older sister Trina. She is a normal girl, sometimes a little insecure and not flawless, but she is always there for her friends, helps with their problems and holds the whole group together. She is intelligent, optimistic, kind, and creative. Her love is for music. She has a beautiful voice, but she cannot play an instrument. Tori is of Latin American descent and can speak Spanish fluently.

André Harris

André Harris is Tori's best friend and accompanies her on almost all songs. As a talented songwriter and musician, he can play many instruments including guitar , keyboard and horn . He loves to be on stage and takes his talent very seriously. André often helps Tori and her friends with problems. He is also creative, charming and relaxed, which is why he is a welcome listener.

Robbie Shapiro

Robbie Shapiro is a shy student who lacks naturalness in dealing with his classmates, especially girls. As a gifted ventriloquist , he almost always carries his hand puppet Rex with him, which looks similar to him, but is apparently completely different in character. In the role of the doll Rex, which he treats like a real person, Robbie is accordingly self-confident. Robbie is often bullied by Jade and is often part of their jokes. Robbie has feelings for Cat.

Jade West

Jade West is feared in Hollywood Arts because of her deceit . This makes it difficult for others to like her. She also often makes fun of Robbie and Tori. She has been enemies with Tori since the first meeting because she assumed that Tori was flirting with her boyfriend Beck. Jade and Beck have been together for several years, although they are fundamentally different. However, during the third and fourth seasons they were temporarily separated. Jade is a very talented actress, singer and screenwriter. She gets along best with Cat, although this jade almost drives you crazy at times. She also gets along well with André.

Caterina "Cat" Valentine

Cat Valentine is mostly in a good mood, easy to satisfy and is liked by all students. She has strong mood swings and is very sensitive. Her acting is also somewhat exaggerated . If Cat feels attacked, they respond regularly with the phrase "What's that supposed to mean ?! please" ( english What's that supposed to mean ?! ). Cat has a brother who, according to her stories, often happens to crazy things.

Beck Oliver

Beck Oliver is one of the most talented actors in high school. As a good-looking, nice student, he remains humble. He is adored by the girls, which often makes his girlfriend Jade jealous. Beck often stands up for Tori when Jade is bothering her. He has been friends with André for a long time. Beck lives in a trailer because he no longer wants to live under his parents' roof. He is a native Canadian.

Trina Vega

Trina Vega is Tori's older sister who loves to be the center of attention. She has a firm belief in becoming a star but doesn't seem to have any kind of talent. Trina is superficial and self-centered. In some episodes she shows herself to be caring when she looks after her sister and helps with her problems. Cat is the only one Trina gets along reasonably well with.

More figures

Furthermore, a number of recurring minor characters belong to the ensemble of the series. The most important ones include the bizarre acting teacher Erwin Sikowitz , the trust teacher Lane Alexander and Sinjin Van Cleef , a bizarre classmate.

production

Emergence

Victorious is the fifth series that Dan Schneider developed for Nickelodeon after The Amanda Show , Drake & Josh , Zoey 101 , and iCarly . In 2005, Schneider first met Victoria Justice , who auditioned for the role of Lola Martinez on Zoey 101 . He was so impressed with her energy and looks that he gave her the role shortly afterwards. After filming three episodes with her, he told Nickelodeon, "I have your next star."

Victoria Justice continued her role on Zoey 101 until the series was discontinued in 2008. At the same time, Nickelodeon's competitor, Disney , had great hits with Hannah Montana and High School Musical . Because of their popularity, Nickelodeon signed a contract with Sony Music Entertainment in 2007 to collaborate on music and television projects. So Schneider was hired to write the first music-based television series for Nickelodeon. Even before the end of Zoey 101 , Schneider spoke to Justice about a new series starring her.

Schneider realized that many children and young people would like to become actors or singers. “If I've learned anything from children, it's that every child dreams of being a celebrity,” says Schneider. So he wanted to create a series that would give viewers an insight into the life of a famous person. Various concepts were discussed during the conversation between Schneider and Justice. Justice mentioned that she had previously attended a performing arts school. This inspired Schneider to write a series about teenagers attending drama school.

On August 13, 2008, Nickelodeon announced that Justice had signed the show for the series. Sony Music Entertainment is co-producing the series and producing and publishing the music for the series.

occupation

Most of the main characters in the Victorious series have appeared in other Nickelodeon productions. In addition to her role as Lola Martinez in Zoey 101 , Victoria Justice also played minor roles in the Nickelodeon-produced series iCarly , True Jackson , The Naked Brothers Band and Troop - Die Monsterjäger . In addition, she was at the side of Avan Jogia in the film musical Spectacular! to see. Daniella Monet made a guest appearance as Rebecca in three episodes of the Nickelodeon series Zoey 101 . Leon Thomas III played in the musicals The Color Purple and Caroline, or Change . He had a guest appearance as Harper on iCarly and played a minor role in the musical film The Sound of the Heart . Elizabeth Gillies and Ariana Grande both appeared on Broadway Musical 13 . In front of Victorious, Grande was the only one of the seven leading actors not yet in front of the camera.

Various international celebrities such as Jack Black , Ke $ ha , Perez Hilton , Shirley Jones and Renée Taylor have appeared in the series. In addition, several actors known from other Nickelodeon series received minor guest appearances, including: Jerry Trainor , Josh Peck , Yvette Nicole Brown , Nathan Kress , Drake Bell and Jennette McCurdy .

Production process

Since Schneider was involved in the production of iCarly in parallel with Victorious , all Victorious episodes of a season were filmed in about five months of the year .

At the beginning the script was drafted by the authors in group work and finally formulated by the main author. Then the authors, producers and the main cast met for a reading sample, the "table read". Refinements were made to the script. In the same week, the filming of the episode began. This usually took four to five days. After the episode was recorded, the songs that appeared in each episode were recorded in the recording studio. From this point on, the film editors began editing and post-processing the episode. The producers were often present.

The series was written by Dan Schneider , Matt Fleckenstein , Jake Farrow , George Doty IV , Arthur Gradstein , Warren Bell and Christopher J. Nowak . Directed by Steve Hoefer , Russ Reinsel , Adam Weissman , David Kendall and Clayton Boen .

Filming

The filming location of Victorious , Nickelodeon Studios on Sunset Boulevard

Victorious is primarily set in the Hollywood Arts , which is set at the Nickelodeon Studios on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood , California . The school's exterior shots are from Burbank High School near Los Angeles . The Asphalt Café scenes, as well as most of the outside scenes, are filmed in the parking lot of Nickelodeon Studios in Hollywood.

Filming of the 20 episode first season began on October 5, 2009 and continued until March 26, 2010. On October 22, 2010, Dan Schneider announced the production of a second season of 13 episodes. The film was shot from October 25, 2010 to February 23, 2011. The third and last season was shot from the end of September 2011 to July 2012.

style

Excerpts from everyday life in Hollywood Arts are often shown as transitions between individual scenes. In addition, during the episode, you sometimes see Tori's smartphone with her mood and a current status report on TheSlap.com, a school-internal website that is actually operated by Nickelodeon for promotional purposes.

In Victorious , as in other Nickelodeon series, care is taken to avoid product placement . The "Pear Phone" and the "Pear Pad" used in the series are allusions to the iPhone and iPad from Apple ( English pear ~ pear, English apple ~ apple). All computers have a pear on the back that is glued over the Apple logo. Also, the name of is Internet - video portal YouTube by "Splash Face" replaced.

Due to the popularity of music series, the makers of Victorious wanted to produce a similar series. In addition to acting, Hollywood Arts attaches great importance to the musical skills of the students. Each high school student must play at least one instrument. In order to optimally integrate the songs, concerts, singing competitions or the like are often built into the plot of the series. Justice said that every third or fourth episode there is a song performed by a leading actor.

On August 2, 2011, the first soundtrack was released under the name Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show for the series. In addition, a single is available for selected songs from the series. Music videos are also produced for some of the songs. All songs and music videos are published by the record company Sony Music Entertainment .

attitude

On August 10, 2012, the series was discontinued after four seasons and 60 episodes. Schneider added on his blog on the same day that the broadcaster Nickelodeon is phasing out many series after 60 episodes and that the discontinuation was not related to poor audience ratings or a spin-off. The third season was subsequently split up by Nickelodeon, making the series a total of 60 episodes in four seasons. The series finale aired in the United States on February 2, 2013.

Justice commented on the discontinuation of the series to M Magazine: “ We will not be expecting a fourth season, this is the first time I've talked about it. I just found out a couple of days ago that we're not coming back. It's sad because I've been with Nickelodeon since I was 12 years old and I became a family with my Victorious cast. We spent a lot of time together and bonded for sure - I'll look back on the experience very fondly. It's a little shocking and a little bittersweet, but at the end of the day it might not be such a bad thing - we all want to do our own thing and continue to grow. "( Victoria Justice , German:" We are not expecting a fourth season, this is the first time I talk about it. A few days ago I found out that we won't be coming back. That's sad because I've been with Nickelodeon since I was twelve years old and the cast of Victorious has become like family to me. We spent a lot of time together - I look back on this experience with fondness. It's a little bit shocking, but in the end it'll be for the best - us everyone wants to do our own thing and grow with us. ”).

Spin-off

In August 2012, the broadcaster ordered a pilot for a new series called Sam & Cat . It is a spin-off of the series iCarly and Victorious , in which Ariana Grande plays her role from Victorious and Jennette McCurdy plays her role from iCarly . The spin-off is about the two protagonists who start a babysitting company.

The preview, which aired after the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on March 27, 2010, saw 5.7 million people, making it the second most successful premiere of a Nickelodeon real film series after iCarly . The first regularly broadcast episode was seen by 3.5 million viewers. After the special iCarly: iPsycho , which aired on June 4, 2010, Victorious achieved the second highest ratings since the preview with 5.7 million viewers. The first episode of the second season, A Solo for 2 , which aired on April 2, 2011 in the United States, is the series' most watched episode with 6.1 million viewers.

criticism

The series received mixed reviews. Variety Magazine's Brian Lowry wrote that Victorious was cobbled together with the hollow-headed market in mind. Mark A. Perigard of the Boston Herald named his review " Victorious a Big Loser" and wrote, "Most of the cast is unconvincing, likely because they are based on a script that could have been written by fifth-graders." Roger Catlin by the Hartford Courant describes Victorious as "harmless but not very entertaining". David Hinckley, editor of the Daily News said Victorious was very similar to the iCarly series . He hopes the series will develop its own character over time. Linda Stasi of the New York Post agreed that the series was over the top and looked cheesy in parts, but believes Victorious will be a tween hit.

The success of the series was mainly attributed to the lead actress Victoria Justice, whose appearance was unanimously well received by the critics. The Daily News wrote : “Justice can sing better than act, the series is not as smooth as iCarly . However, Justice has the talent that is needed for the next big star. "Perigard described her as" an undoubtedly attractive young woman, "and Lowry noted," Justice is talented enough to attract viewers herself. "

Critics in German-speaking countries also rate the series differently. An author from cdstarts.de criticizes the series for its simple and flat plot. However, she praises the musical performance of the series, which is on an average good level, as well as the soundtrack. In the online video library Maxdome , Victorious is described positively: "Even if the story seems a bit cheesy here and there, it offers just the right mix of everyday adventures and glamorous performances by the students."
