This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion]]. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to [[WP:AFD|AfD]] or tagged with {{tl|prod}}.

=General discussion=
If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{tl|db-foreign}} to get added to [[Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion]]: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. '''If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is [[Wikipedia:Translation]].''' As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing users talk-page using the templates from [[Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages]] or using {{tl|UE}}.
{{Shortcut|T:MP}}

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion|AfD]]. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{tl|notenglish}} to {{tls|afd}} and the other [[Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion#How_to_list_pages_for_deletion|deletion steps]] should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the [[Wikipedia:Embassy]] or [[m:Wikipedia Embassy|Ambassador]] member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use [[Wikipedia:Language recognition chart|Language recognition chart]] and if that fails, some [[language recognition]] web site, such as [http://www.xrce.xerox.com/competencies/content-analysis/tools/guesser-ISO-8859-1.en.html xrce], or [http://languid.cantbedone.org/ languid.cantbedone.org] to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for [[wp:copyvio|copyvio]] before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for [[WP:CSD#G12|CSD G12]] can be speedily deleted with {{tl|db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on [[WP:CP]].) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When pages listed here have been translated, their entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

==Boilerplate text==
== A featured pic hat trick ==
For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

:1. Use the notice '''{{Tlp|Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}}''' if you know the language used, or '''{{Tl|Notenglish}}''' if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
{{notenglish|category=<!--Prevents category showing-->}}
:2. Add a mention on this page, using:
::'''<nowiki>{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~</nowiki>''' replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or '''<nowiki>{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~</nowiki>''' if you cannot identify the language used
:3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with '''{{Tl|Uw-english}}''', the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with '''{{Tl|contrib-xx1}}''', where xx is the language code ([[WP:PNT/T|available templates]]). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is '''{{tl|uw-notenglish}}'''. Usage is '''<nowiki>{{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~</nowiki>.
If there is just a ''section'' that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:
:1. Use '''<nowiki>[[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]]</nowiki>'''.
:2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
::'''<nowiki>''</nowiki>Section <nowiki>[[#name-of-section|name-of-section]]</nowiki> contains text that needs translation into English.<nowiki>''</nowiki>'''.
:3. Add a mention on this page.

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:
:1. Use the notice '''{{tl|cleanup-translation}}''', which will show up as:
{{cleanup-translation|category=<!--Prevents category showing-->}}
:2. Add a mention to the [[#Translated pages that could still use some cleanup| translation cleanup section ]] on this page.

* Does anyone know the Wikipedia policy on genealogy pages? This article is about three generations of the Arcaya family, and it contains little other than lists of children and short descriptions of the various families. Maybe some of the individual members of this family might qualify as notable, such as [[Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen]] who was president of Guatemala from 1996 to 2000. ::In short: Names and Genealogy are not suitable for articles. Surnames maybe. See:[[Wikipedia:Deletion policy/names and surnames]]. I believe it's time to move forwards with adding featured sounds to the main page. There are 98 featured sound files, representing 65 distinct compositions (symphonies and such can contain multiple files because of the various movements) Our statistics are reasonably good, with about a dozen per month in the last three months, and October looking good for a strong increase on that.
Specifically the entry on the Czech Republic needs work, it's well referenced but the citations are in text and require formatting also. There are other sections in need of help though. This will need some set-up time, of course, so I'd suggest that we start by putting in featured sounds in place of the weekend featured pictures in, say, November or December (I have discussed such a move with Howcheng) and plan on starting a daily run of featured sounds in the new year.

::I agree with the above editors—given the relative scarcity of featured sounds (which is not a comment on the quality of the selections, of course) and the scarcity of space on the Main Page, folding featured sounds into the current "featured image" selection and calling it "featured media" is probably the way to go. If this is done, the first sound selection needs to be chosen very carefully as a useful introduction to the concept, so I'd advise not going forward until you have a specific selection in mind for it. This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

Standard procedures

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing users talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce, or languid.cantbedone.org to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When pages listed here have been translated, their entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

Boilerplate text

For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page, using:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.

If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:

1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
''Section [[#name-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
3. Add a mention on this page.

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

Pages for consideration

If you are not completely sure of what language an article is written in, feel free to use a language inspection site
and check the language recognition chart.
If you are sure, consider placing the corresponding template on the creator's talk page.

  • Yes, Italian. It's a stub article about a famous mountain in the Dolomite mountains of northern Italy. Clearly notable, clearly needs translation. Should be checked for copyvio (but I doubt this problem) and existence on Italian Wikipedia. --Cbdorsett (talk) 12:52, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Italian. There is a better article at de:Col di Lana that could be the basis for this article.  Andreas  (T) 12:56, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • It's a geo stub about a place in Algeria. Looks notable. As long as it clears a copyvio check, I would say list it for translation. --Cbdorsett (talk) 08:42, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I roughly translated the article. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 21:38, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Does anyone know the Wikipedia policy on genealogy pages? This article is about three generations of the Arcaya family, and it contains little other than lists of children and short descriptions of the various families. Maybe some of the individual members of this family might qualify as notable, such as Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen who was president of Guatemala from 1996 to 2000. My personal opinion is that pages of this sort are not encyclopedic and should be excluded. Cbdorsett (talk) 05:02, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In short: Names and Genealogy are not suitable for articles. Surnames maybe. See:Wikipedia:Deletion policy/names and surnames. So I'd say that the first (3?) paragraphs, a ver few others further down (heraldry, general references to world dispersion), and maybe a 'see also' in disambig style, may be worthy. - Nabla (talk) 19:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This may be (at least in part) about a Basque medieval "clan", I need to check that because in that case I think it might be notable. Either way, we can keep the page because there's a town by that name (Arcaya/Arkaia) which has no page yet. It might make more sense to turn it into a geo stub and keep some of the genealogoy stuff under a section of "historic families" or "famous ppl from..." or something like that. I've cleaned up the translation some more, but more clean up is still required, especially as concerns the proper translation of job titles and cultural institutions in contemporary France. Also the French original has a new paragraph which has not been added to the English version. • I deleted all of the French because it comes from the French Wikipedia. The remaining English needs copyedit, so this article should now be moved to the bottom half of this page. I removed the translate tag but did not put a new one there (I don't know what the latest tags are for this). --Cbdorsett (talk) 14:18, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've done some copyediting. There is more detail in the French WP text that could be brought over. French WP has a list of sources of which one is what we might class as a reliable secondary source: Dictionnaire de biographie héraultaise – Pierre Clerc – Ed.Presses du Languedoc 2006. Still much more to be done to make this a useful part of a series on French medieval aristocracy. I tagged it for a history expert. Itsmejudith (talk) 10:42, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
