Wakfu is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by the French developer Ankama . It is the successor to Dofus and is set 1000 years after its story.

Wakfu is a franchise because, in addition to the MMORPG, various adaptations have been published in other media. The game can be played in French, Spanish, English and German.

history

Wakfu is set 1000 years after Dofus . In the period between Dofus and Wakfu, the ogre Ogrest found all of the Dofus and became more powerful than the gods, a titan. His tears of sorrow of a lost love flooded the world and created the islands of the world of Wakfu.

Game mechanics

Wakfu is an MMORPG and therefore offers the opportunity to explore the world with a large number of players and to achieve success together. A basic element of many MMORPGs are the battles against malicious creatures or other players. In Wakfu, as in the predecessor Dofus, these are turn-based . For the combat system, the action points that are consumed by the player in actions such as moving the character or carrying out attacks are decisive. Depending on the character's ability, which can also be increased by collecting items and equipment, the number of these points and their consumption varies. After a completed round within the fight, the action points are replenished. The fights themselves take place in a so-called "combat bubble" and can be observed from the outside, but not entered by other players afterwards. This combat bubble is dependent on the terrain in its shape and size. The combat bubble consists of fields similar to a chessboard and is divided into two parts. The main focus of the disputes is on the tactical element.

Character classes and character development

There are 18 character classes (as of 2019) among them you will find classics such as warriors, archer and healers, but also more exotic classes such as time mages, treasure hunters and players.

Each class has 4 talent strands with 5 skills each. Three of these talent strands are each assigned to one of the 4 elements (fire, water, air and earth), these are the skills that are most often used in battles. Using these skills in combat increases their levels and makes the skill more effective. As soon as the sum of all skills in a talent strand reaches a certain value, the next skill is activated.

The other two talent strands contain active and passive support skills that are mostly very powerful and very unique, but are also limited in use. These skills are not improved by use, but must be improved as you level up.

In addition to the skills, there are also various properties that can be increased after leveling up, which is achieved through gained experience. Different traits have different costs, for example an extra life point costs one trait point, while agility costs three points.

Ecosystem

In Wakfu there is a dynamic ecosystem influenced by the player. For example, players are able to almost exterminate animals or plants, which would increase the price of resources or make certain items or content no longer available. Conversely, prices fall if there is an oversupply. Similar to the free market economy, the market is regulated according to the players, but can be influenced.

Political system

The Wakfu political system enables each of the islands that constitute a nation to enact its own laws. Likewise, penalties for lawbreakers who can be regarded as outlawed and vulnerable. Any player can become the governor of their nation. Furthermore, the government can use quests such as B. "Plant x trees" to stabilize the ecosystem. Also the PvP behavior is determined by law, whether more or less emphasis on the fight between players differs from nation to nation. And every player can choose where they want to live.

jobs

There are two types of professions: gathering professions and craftsmen.

Planting and harvesting is typical of jobs in the first category, where there is direct interaction with the environment. All professions that affect the ecosystem have two facets: the extraction of resources from the ecosystem (harvesting) and the addition of resources to the ecosystem (plants). With knowledge of forestry one can, for example, cut down walnut trees or plant nuts in order to grow new walnut trees allow.

The craftsman professions can process resources such as wood, grain or herbs into equipment, food or potions. Animal resources are also required for some items.

Like the main skills, the professional level also increases through the application and thus unlocks better recipes.

The hiking bag

A magical hiking bag functions as a house that you always carry with you. This can be expanded in many ways, e.g. B. it is possible to plant herbs in it or to sell objects. It can also be expanded to include workplaces.

Adaptations

As part of a cross-media approach, a trading card game called Wakfu: Incarnam was published by Upper Deck on October 12, 2009 , and a comic called Les chroniques de Wakfu: Maille à partir with 76 pages and an animated series on June 4, 2009 .

cartoon

The game was adapted by Ankama in 2008 as a French-language animated series, which, like the game, was entitled Wakfu . Like the game, the series, directed by Anthony "Tot" Roux, was animated using Adobe Flash . The character design was created by Xavier "Xa" Houssin and Kim "Tcho" Etinoff. The French studio was supported by a number of Japanese animators in the production of the anime- style series. To create the series, the book Wakfu: Making of Saison 1 ( ISBN 978-2-916739-97-7 ) was published on November 19, 2009 .

The series was first presented at the London MCM Expo, where the first two episodes were shown in English. The 26 episode series was televised for the first time since October 30, 2008 on France 3 television . The last episode was broadcast on June 5, 2010. The television series was quite successful and won 1.2 million viewers during the 9th episode. Since August 27, 2010, RTL II has been showing the series on its website mypokito.de .

An offshoot of the series with the title Mini-Wakfu appeared since September 2009 and was offered as a stream . In the short, humorous animations, the characters were depicted in a super-deformed style in a very trivialized manner.

Comic

A French comic adaptation by Tot, Jean-David Morvan and AdRian will appear in German on Tokyopop from October 2010 under the title Wakfu Heroes . Another adaptation will follow as The Chronicles of Wakfu 2011.
