Lifan Industry ( Chinese : 力帆 lì fān, German : Powerful sails) is a Chinese manufacturer of passenger cars , trucks , commercial vehicles and motorcycles with headquarters in Chongqing . The company was founded in 1992 by Yin Mingshan (尹明善).

description

The company was originally founded to produce motorcycles and initially only had nine employees. The first product was the small Lifan TMS 200 motorcycle. A few months after the company was founded, other products such as dirt bikes and other motorcycles from the TMS series followed.

The market success has made Lifan one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the People's Republic of China and today employs around 15,000 people. Lifan also built production facilities in Vietnam and Thailand, among others.

The company entered automobile production in 2002 with the Lifan 520. This was initially only offered as a notchback sedan and was supplemented by a small car in mid-2007. In 2003 the production of trucks was finally started. The first truck model was the Lifan LF180, which is reminiscent of a heavily modified IVECO truck. The Lifan LF230, which is a modified version of an older Magirus-Deutz truck, was introduced as the second model . In 2004, the Yunnan Lifan Junma Vehicle vehicle plant was founded in Dali as a joint venture between Lifan and the trading company Junma. Light and heavy trucks and tractors are produced in Dali . On March 16, 2010, the establishment of the subsidiary Shanghai ZhongKe Lifan Automobile Co. , which deals with the development of electric cars, was announced in a joint venture with the Chinese Academy of Sciences .

An initial public offering in November 2010 transformed Lifan into a public company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange .

The group also owns the Chongqing Lifan Football Club .

Lifan in international markets

The brand's trucks are also enjoying worldwide success and are sold in many countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. In 2003, Lifan also received joint venture offers and production inquiries. The first Lifan model for Europe was produced in Ukraine by the AwtoSAS group as the ZAZ-Lifan 520, but only remained in production until the end of 2006. In the course of the advancing globalization of the group, the American market was reached in the same year. In order to gain a foothold there, they first began to import motorcycles to North America. The target markets are the United States of America , Mexico and Canada . In 2007, the car model series was expanded. The Lifan 620 was introduced in the People's Republic of China as a new mid-range model. This is very similar to the Chinese version of the Toyota Corolla and ranks one step above the Lifan 520. Since 2012, the Lifan 630 has been offered as a revised version of the 620 parallel to it. The second vehicle introduced was the Lifan 320 . This is similar to the Mini One and is reminiscent of the Japanese Daihatsu Duet. In 2013 the Lifan 330 was introduced, which is a facelift of the 320, but which is still offered in parallel. In September production of the Lifan 520 as Holland Car Abay began in Ethiopia ; this is exported to the Ukraine as the successor to the discontinued ZAZ-Lifan 520 under the original name Lifan 520. The first European sister model of the Lifan 520 has been produced by the Italian car manufacturer Martin Motors as the MM520 since 2009 and will soon also be offered in Germany.

In Uruguay, the Lifan Motors Uruguay subsidiary has been running its own plant since 2012, which resumed operations in May 2017 after an interruption of one and a half years.

However, the Lifan Group has not yet planned any exports to the European Union . So far, only Lifan motorcycles of the types Lifan LF125 and Lifan LF150 are available within the EU, which are imported by some dealers and manufactured in a Bulgarian plant.
