Indian Ocean vandal

I was trying to figure that out myself, but with the new warning templates, they've separated test and vandal warnings. Actually, looking at {{uw-vandalism4im}}, that one seems to be as close to the old BV as you can get. Suharto

Perhaps you should explain what you mean in plain words rather talking in riddles. I won't be offended. Do you object to me moving the article? Both the Indonesian Wikipedia and the Javanese Wikipedia call him Soeharto, not Haj Mohammed Soeharto. (I don't why they prefer Soeharto to Suharto, which is clearly the current official spelling - I am currently in Indonesia, and I asked). Adam 09:52, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

I really don't know what you mean. This is a simple question: what is the man's name? All the sources I have seen say his name is Suharto, and that he only uses "Haj Mohammed" when he wants to show what a good Muslim he is. I believe Sukarno likewise was Achmed Sukarno when it suited him, although that wasn't his name either. The article should call him by his correct name in its current official spelling, which is Suharto. Adam 10:17, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

hmm - i don't have particularly strong views on these issues (and there is more than one issue). Firstly, I am glad to see dropping of the Islamic titles. I don't think they were representative, and yes, probably were used from time to time for political advantage (and I won't speculate on the motives on whatever editor originally added them, although I have my suspicions it may not have been motivated by a search for boring encyclopedia factual representative accurate emphasis).

As for Soeharto vs. Suharto - i really don't know. I would tend to lean towards Suharto as most (maybe even all??) of my texts use that form (even though the same texts might use 'soe' for other people - which makes me think some kind of thinking went into each name). Subandrio

I don't speak Indonesian, so I can't take part in that discussion. I agree that Indonesians don't seem to have made up their minds which spelling they want to use. My visa, for example, refers to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. My understanding, however, is that that the "u" spelling is the official and correct one (see Differences between Malay and Indonesian), and has been since 1947. So the Indonesian Wikipedia is wrong when it titles articles Soekarno and Soeharto. In any case, this is the English Wikipedia, and needs to follow English usage. I have never seen Soebandrio spelled like that in an English source - every source I have spells it Subandrio. Adam 01:37, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I reckon you two have rocks in your head jumping on Necrothesp like that. When I moved the article from "Dick Robson" to "Richard Robson", I didn't bother altering the article text from "Dick". So when Necrothesp came across the article, he noticed that it referred to "Dick" throughout, so moved it to "Dick Robson". There's no reason to suppose that Necrothesp knew of the discussion between us, which has long been buried in our talk archives. Probably he didn't even look at the article history to see that it had been previously moved. I really can't fault him. So the sarcastic award as an opening gambit seems pretty unfair to me. PLace v Chase

I kinda got a bit closer

with this one the fire was about 500m away, visability was about 200m but got some wonderful photographs, the helo were filling up in a lake which was 800m behind me I parked there and walk to where the trucks were getting water from. You've done the right thing with issuing a heads up warning. I've watchlisted the FM article and will keep an eye on it. It doesn't seem to be regular activity, but it's bound to flare up again before too long. The edits aren't conforming to the policy of Neutral point of view and need a close eye.

Biogeographic regions

They're IBRA [4] boundaries. I could answer your "from whose perspective" question by saying "Department of Environment and Water Resources, Australian Government", but I suspect your question was meant to be rather more sophisticated than that.

In brief, John Stanley Beard published the WA ones in 1980 as "phytogeographic regions" (i.e. vegetation community boundaries) using data from the Vegetation Survey of Western Australia. Later on he realised that vegetation grows in soil and in a climate, and provides habitat for animals, so plants and animals and geology and climate are all intertwingled. That is, whether you map geology/climate, vegetation or fauna, you'll end up with basically the same map. So after 1984 they were spruiked as general "natural regions" rather than vegetation-specific.

In the 2000s, it was decided that Australia needed a biogeographic regionalisation for the whole country. They grabbed a state regionalisation from each state (Beard's from WA), fiddled a bit at the state boundaries to make the regions line up, and published it as the "Interim Biogeographical Regionalisation of Australia" (IBRA). IBRA is now up to Version 6.1, and removal of the word "Interim" is long overdue.

These days, IBRA gets used a lot. e.g. the National Reserve System for Australia is using it to identify priority areas for establishment of reserves. They don't ever again want to see the situation like in the wheatbelt where virtually 100% of certain vegetation communities has been cleared away and lost forever, so they are aiming to reserve a reasonable amount of native vegetation in each IBRA region.

Indonesia (Guidebook) notability

Sure thing. It's just that there are hundreds of Lonely Planet books, and there's very little to say about any of them beyond what is in the Lonely Planet and Guide book articles. Indonesia (Guidebook) is the only article on an individual Lonely Planet guidebook. Why is this book notable? Why is it more notable than the other Lonely Planet guidebooks? Re: Concern

Okay, I think I see your point, but I'm not sure I agree. The logging protesters weren't engaged in conservation? Sure they were, at the grassroots. The Great Walk people weren't engaged in conservation? Sure they were - raising awareness of conservation issues is an important part of conservation. Often these grassroots groups are more important to conservation than the administrative bodies that take credit for the outcomes.

I do think that the conservation category should eventually be subcategorised by topic; e.g. environmental conservation versus heritage conservation. But that's a different kettle of fish.

On another note, I object to the hijacking of the word "environment". Beekeepers are just as environmental as bushwalkers are just as environmental as logging companies are just as environmental as feral conservationists are just as environmental as eco-tourism companies. But "environment" has unfortunately been co-opted to refer specifically to conservation of the environment. On those grounds, I would rename the "Environmental organisations" category to "Conservation organisations in Australia" or "Environmental conservation organisations in Australia".

Another problem

Being, the continued upload of the AC website to wikipedia and, more alarmingly, commons. The file Image:Aquinas college map.JPG is attributed to our fellow editor. Think probably in the History project, I know it was in actual use early 70's, once the time driving from Norseman to Ceduna was measured in hours instead of days the time zone faded to the SA-WA border being +8 and +9.5. hmmm - i wish i was still away. House and beach were superb. We are thinking at least 10 days next time though. I only really got into the 'zone' yesterday as one of my mates had to leave early. He is nice but highly strung, and it was nice once he'd left. ha ha. but weather was superb. I read a few chapters from a few old INdonesian books (after my nagging and needy friend left). Indonesia (Guidebook) notability

Sure thing. It's just that there are hundreds of Lonely Planet books, and there's very little to say about any of them beyond what is in the Lonely Planet and Guide book articles. Indonesia (Guidebook) is the only article on an individual Lonely Planet guidebook. Why is this book notable? Why is it more notable than the other Lonely Planet guidebooks? It sounds like the Lonely Planet guide to Indonesia is an important source for Indonesian articles you are working on. But the book can still be cited without having a dedicated wikipedia article. If you feel a wikilink is necessary, why not link to Lonely Planet? I understand that the book has a tremendous impact on visitors to Indonesia (and what they choose to spend their money on), but that is true of every guidebook on every country. The studies you mentioned regarding the impact of guidebooks would be a tremendous addition to the guide book article, and would give a much clearer picture of the economic impact of these books -- wouldn't it be better to discuss the studies there, where more readers would benefit from the information, rather than in an individual book's page?

I'm a die-hard inclusionist, who almost always says "keep" in AfD discussions, but the prospect of thousands of articles on every book published by Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Frommers, Fodors, Let's Go, or Footprint, each with just the authors and table of contents, is mind-boggling. There is really no need to be so hostile. I would expect someone who has contributed as much to wikipedia as you have to understand the importance of civility. You have not stated why you feel this book satisfies the criteria in WP:BK, simply that you want to have the article, and that you have contributed greatly to wikipedia.

If you feel so strongly about it, that's fine. I will not pursue the issue further, since it is not something that is important to me. Feel free to remove the notability tag.

One a separate note, your research on Indonesian tourism sounds very interesting. Is it available on the web? If not I look forward to reading about it when you post information from it on Wikipedia. It is 10:30 pm here now. I'm in the Eastern USA. I'll look at your maps in the morning with coffee. The ISSNs I know are 8 digits separated by a hyphen ... i.e. {{ISSN|1087-0156}} which displays as ISSN 1087-0156. Keesiewonder ^talk 03:34, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Och - you're being hard on yourself! If by the top right thing you meant the coordinate thingy - anywhere on the page you drop on {{CoorHeader|31|59|60|S|116|4|46|E|type:XXX|region:AU}} where XXX is a defined type. I have a tool within Google Earth that creates a template using the lat and long of wherever you have centred on google earth, I then just changed the name of the template. I got addicted to doing that for a while and had been in remission until recently... Conservation

What if we created a Category:Conservation activism in Western Australia and made it a subcategory of Category:Conservation in Western Australia? I am very sorry - but in my conceptualisation of the issue and despite popular usage conservation groups - I would personally like to see a separation of the activism versus the actual conservation - to make a distinction - but if there is a good check elsewhere in wikipedia as how either other states or projects have dealt with it (unless its the usual band of 11 year old american school students...) I would be only too pleased to concede to some crappy category.. and offer the first two rounds next meetup if there is strong evidence of the rest of wikipedia conflating activism with the act of conservation...
