If you're here about an image or other media item with no source: all images I made are in the public domain (unless there's some legal reason you know of why they cannot be); all clips from CDs or LPs were uploaded under fair use ages ago when there was no clear policy on such things--if you think they should be deleted now, then by all means delete them.
Queries, praise, criticism, requests, all welcomed. Rants tolerated. I might reply here, I might reply on your talk page - it depends on whether I think you'll be interested in the reply, on the direction of the wind, on how many cups of coffee I've had that day, on many other factors.

If you're here for anything else and you want to make sure I receive it, it's probably best to use the email link on my user page. I don't regularly check this page.

Hi, Camembert, I saw you're interested in (classical) music. Maybe you would like to talk about the possible creating of a Wikimusic? There are no real plans right now, but we would like your imput! Please add you comment at [[:nl:gebruiker:effeietsanders/project:Wikimusic|this]] page, and put your name on the list if you want to stay informed. If you would want to, you can add your email as well. In front of you reaction I thank you for your enthousiasm. If you know someone who might be interested, don't hesitate, and give him/her the link! (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/gebruiker:Effeietsanders/project:Wikimusic), even if they are not active on wikipedia. Spread the word!!! Yes you are right! ''Mungiga'' is swedish. I wrote it there and if I did something similar to ''Susning.nu'' it would be considerated as spam and immediately removed :-) If you would like the translation to swedish of any musical instrument then maybe I can help you out? Just write to me (in english of course) at my nickpage at susning.nu (use the link in the signature to get there) click "[Redigera den här sidan]" at the bottom of the page to open the editor, "[Förhandsgranska]" = ''Preview'', "[Spara]" = ''Save''. See this as one of the first cross wikipedia, cross nation discussions ever :-) \\ [http://susning.nu/Solkoll Solkoll of Susning]

Hello, I noticed your work on [[masque]] and wondered if you might be any good on the article above which is a UK Collaboration of the week. We're not currently doing fantastically well, I would venture to suggest. --[[User:Bodnotbod|bodnotbod]] 21:18, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

:What I wrote at masque was basically rubbish. It's a good job somebody completely redid it. Anyway, I'm three months late on this one, as usual.... --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

:If I were still here, I daresay I would be--good luck with it. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]
"Zillions Of Games" is an authoritative source. They are the ones doing the cataloguing. "Nearly 1000" was not a vague estimate. The exact present number is "958". See for yourself. Please allow my update of this number from "several hundred". --[[User:OmegaMan|OmegaMan]]

== Improving Instrument Articles? ==
:I don't agree that Zillions of Games is an authoritative source - many chess variants do not have Zillions of Games versions (there's no sign of [[patrol chess]] of [[grid chess]], for instance, or even of [[progressive chess]], which is very popular), and many Zillions of Games games are not chess variants. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

In the hope that you might return, I leave you a message! Maybe I'll still be interested if/when you reply! In any case, I noted that you've written many, if not most, of the articles on musical instruments, and was curious if maybe you would like to hash out and start a WikiProject with the intent of making said pages more quickly readable and standardized (say, by making a template that would include Hornbostel-Sachs classification, "common" classification (e.g. woodwind, brass, percussion, etc.), famous works including it, and so forth.) If you're interested, just drop me a line on my talk page, and we can start discussing such a project.
There are only 3 possible, modern authoritative sources on chess variants. Admittedly, "Zillions Of Games" is imperfect but to exclude it as not having credibility is irresponsible. "ZOG" is ground zero to chess variant creators. Their catalog only includes those chess variants which have been implemented for the Zillions program.

-- [[User:Pipian|Pipian]] 01:04, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
The Chess Variant Pages has a larger catalog which includes many chess variants that have not (with no games from other categories). Of course, other chess variants exist which are not included in either catalog. For now, the number can remain unchanged with my consent (due to its triviality) but it is arguably much too low. --[[User:OmegaMan|OmegaMan]]

:I disagree with some of what you say, but if you're happy enough with the article as is, that's fine. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]
:Sounds intriguing--another one where I have to say I'd be interested if I were still here, but... Good luck with it :) --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

:My primary reference for the article was most likely the sixth edition of the [[Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians|Grove dictionary]]. I didn't generally provide references for articles where the information could be checked in any one of a dozen standard reference works--shoddy of me, I know. Anyway, I see somebody else has stuck some references in now, so all is well, I hope. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

==Charles Ives FARC==
:Thanks for pointing it out - I daresay Kunst knows what he's talking about, but I am going to double check my sources, because I'm sure I read somewhere that octaves were not uniformly 1200 cents (I seem to remember also seeing lists of frequency measurements such as those you quote from Kunst, though it wasn't Kunst I read). I may have been imagining it, I suppose - it's not something I've ever seriously studied. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]
The article [[Charles Ives]] has been listed on [[Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates]] ([[Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates/Charles Ives]]), by me, as it has no inline citations and thus does not meet the featured article criteria at [[Wikipedia:What is a featured article?]]: "A featured article has the following attributes" 2.b. "'factually accurate' includes the supporting of facts with specific evidence and external citations...these include a "References" section where the references are set out, complemented where appropriate by inline citations."

I'm writing you because you contributed to the article. If you did the latter you may be able to add inline citations where appropriate much easier than someone unaquainted with the sources used. I thought you might be interested in the FARC or in saving the article from FAR by adding citations. Thanks. [[User:Hyacinth|Hyacinth]] 11:47, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
:Update - an anon editor removed the info from the article saying "K. is now known to have fudged his data to get perfect octaves" --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

:I expect this has been dealt with now, but just in case: most of the stuff I wrote in these types of articles could, I believe, be confirmed in any one of a dozen references (Grove should cover most of it; if not, anything I put in the "Further reading" or "External links" sections probably would). I did usually cite quotes and more obscure info exactly (if I didn't, it was an oversight), but giving inline references for info that can be checked in a lot of places can, it seems to me, lead to problems in a project like Wikipedia ("'''Ludwig van Beethoven''' was a German (Tovey, 1923) composer (Grove, 1878) of classical music (Rolland, 1903)" etc; I exaggerate, but you get the idea). --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]] 18:31, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

== Chess images ==
Hi, sorry to bother you but would you please consider swapping over [[Black Dyke Band]] and [[Black Dyke Mills Band]]? I don't think I can do it when the new destination already exists.

Hi, since all the chess-related articles are using [[:Template:Chess diagram]] now, many of the images you uploaded are orphaned now. You don't mind if I put them up for deletion, do you? --[[User:Fritz Saalfeld|Fritz S.]] ([[User talk:Fritz Saalfeld|Talk]]) 11:06, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
My reasoning is that [[Black Dyke Band]] is the correct name for the band and should be where the entry is; [[Black Dyke Mills Band]] is merely a previous name and though it should certainly be in as a redirect, it should not be the primary target for the entry. What do you think?

==Unspecified source for Image:Lee in the pub.jpg==
:Nice one, thank you very much. [[User:Nevilley|Nevilley]] 14:59, 20 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Lee in the pub.jpg]]'''. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
::No problem. Would've told you I'd done it, but my connection broke straight afterwards, then somebody came to the door, then I forgot... I'm sure [[Black Dyke Band]] is the better title if that's how they're (or "it's") known now. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the media meets the criteria at [[Wikipedia:Fair use]], use a tag such as {{tlp|Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Thanks for correcting my addition to the [[Carl Maria von Weber]] article. I too am eager to fix the mistakes of the 1911 EB, but I guess it's not much better if I introduce brand new mistakes of my own. I had gotten the W volume of the ''New Grove'', but when I saw how long the Weber article in it was and how long the Wikipedia article was, I realized I didn't have time to compare the two articles, so I just added that paragraph about Mahler and Hindemith off the top of my head. == Thank you, Camembert! ==
So the smear [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Irismeister#Smearing campaign list] is useless here. OK, but thanks for asking. Groucho Marx had put it better in the pre-Wiki interglaciation era - Should I accept being a member of a club who accepts "me" as a member ? :O) Also thank you for your balanced, commending vote. Thus spoke reason. Please rest assured I am not intimidating anyone! I cherish, want and NEED justice. I want the editing game to be fair. I want excuses from those who maintain in writing that I am a "lier". These should be addressed in writing by perpetrators of well qualified [[libel]] against a practicing medical doctor. However, they must be put in writing in front of the Wiki community - for they dishonored the spirit of truth. I don't want it for me - I am not important. Truth is. Yours, sincerely - [[User:Irismeister|irismeister]] 09:39, 2004 Mar 24 (UTC)

:What a deeply stupid message.
: You got it all wrong, [[User:MyRedDice|Martin]]. I disagree with [[Pharisees]]. If we REALLY follow NPOV, we MUST let ALL viewpoints compete without deleting them without reading/listening/putting them in writing as if they didn't exist. NPOV is REAL ''post hoc'' balance, not neutering and ''ante hoc'' castration (so that no mean, median an mode could possibly exist.) The golden, harmonic and time-honored MEAN can ONLY form with ALL POVs stated as such. You NEED to look in the right direction (not always in the laser "guide" aka YOUR own tubular vision), you need to listen, not to diabolize/ban/ask for "evidence" of mistreatment when this is absolutely evident to the point of catching anyone's eye. BTW - you may find it useful to read even the evidence in Wiki by running searches with "lier" and "quack". Even outside my lawyer's dossiers there is plenty for anyone to see and judge. Happy editing quand même - [[User:Irismeister|irismeister]] 08:59, 2004 Mar 24 (UTC)

==Fair use rationale for [[:Image:Stravinsky-petrushka-fanfare.png]]==
* BTW, the definition of [[libel]] is simple, and comes ''directly'' from the Wiki trusted, NPOV source:<br>
[[Image:Nuvola apps important.svg|70px|left]]
::::'''Libel''' and '''slander''' are two forms of '''defamation''' (or '''defamation of character'''), which is the [[tort]] of making a false statement of fact that injures someone's reputation. When the communication is in writing, it is termed "libel". If made via the spoken word, the correct term is "slander". Both acts share a common legal history, although they may be treated differently under modern legal systems. The statement need not be derogatory in itself to be actionable, as where it constitutes '''invasion of privacy''' or portrays the person in a '''false light''', as by calling a prominent Democrat a Republican.
Thanks for uploading or contributing to '''[[:Image:Stravinsky-petrushka-fanfare.png]]'''. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]] but there is no [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline|explanation or rationale]] as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Fair use|boilerplate fair use template]], you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found [[WP:FURG|here]].

==Instrument Transposition List==
So I was thinking I could give you a list of instruments and their keys as found in western classical music along with a short musical snippet of the written pitch and the sounding pitch. I could email you a pdf, or tiff, or eps. The entire thing could be a graphic, or you could create numerous individual graphics of each sample and place it next to plain text. The nice thing about having a whole graphic would be that the musical symbols could be incorporated into the text with great ease - I'll leave that up to you. What say you? Ryan

Please go to [[:Image:Stravinsky-petrushka-fanfare.png|the image description page]] and edit it to include a [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline |fair use rationale]]. Using one of the templates at [[Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline]] is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
:I certainly think we should separate out the text and the images as much as we can. But thinking about this a bit more, I'm not sure there's a lot of value in having images to represent the transposition of every transposing instrument. Wouldn't it do to just give one or two examples in notation and then, once the reader has got the general idea, give them a list of the keys other transposing instruments play in ''without'' notation? This could likely be done as a section within [[transposing instrument]]. I may have a go at something like that myself, but I'll muse on it a bit more for now. If you want to do anything in that direction before I do, then you should go ahead, of course! If you want to send me anything in the meantime, my email address is lee (at) audiblerecords (dot) com. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

[[Image:Nuvola apps important blue.svg|64px|left|Image Copyright problem]]
Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:6thchord.png]]'''. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{Tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the media meets the criteria at [[Wikipedia:Non-free content]], use a tag such as {{tlp|non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

==Notability of [[:The Midlands]]==
:::I don't know off the top of my head, but I may have something about it in some other book. I'll have a look. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]
[[Image:Information_icon.svg|left]]Hello, this is a message from [[User:CSDWarnBot|an automated bot]]. A tag has been placed on [[:The Midlands]], by {{#ifeq:{{{nom}}}|1|[[User:{{{nominator}}}|{{{nominator}}}]]&nbsp;([[User talk:{{{nominator}}}|talk]]&nbsp;'''·''' [[Special:Contributions/{{{nominator}}}|contribs]]),}} another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be [[Wikipedia:Speedy deletions|speedily deleted]] from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because [[:The Midlands]] seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the [[WP:CSD#Articles|criteria for speedy deletion]], articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please [[Wikipedia:Notability|see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable]]. <br><br>To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting [[:The Midlands]], please affix the template <nowiki>{{hangon}}</nowiki> to the page, and put a note on its talk page. [[Image:Nuvola apps important.svg|48px|left]] A tag has been placed on [[:Image:Pauly 1912 selfmate.png]], requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

==Unspecified source for [[:Image:Berg_Lulu_alwa_row_process.png]]==

[[Image:Nuvola apps important blue.svg|70px|left]]
Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Berg_Lulu_alwa_row_process.png]]'''. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{Tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the media meets the criteria at [[Wikipedia:Fair use]], use a tag such as {{tlp|non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following [{{fullurl:Special:Log|type=upload&user=Camembert}} this link]. '''Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged''', as described on [[wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images.2FMedia|criteria for speedy deletion]]. ==[[Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion|Speedy deletion]] nomination of [[:Glenn Gould]]==
[[Image:Ambox warning_pn.svg|48px|left]] A tag has been placed on [[:Glenn Gould]], requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under [[WP:CSD#G11|section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion]], because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read [[Wikipedia:Spam|the guidelines on spam]] as well as [[Wikipedia:FAQ/Business]] for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding <code>{{tl|hangon}}</code> to '''the top of [[:Glenn Gould|the page that has been nominated for deletion]]''' (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on '''[[Talk:Glenn Gould|the talk page]]''' explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for ''speedy'' deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact [[:Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles|one of these admins]] to request that they [[Wikipedia:Userfication#Userfication_of_deleted_content|userfy]] the page or have a copy emailed to you. <!-- Template:Db-spam-notice --> <!-- Template:Db-csd-notice-custom --> <s>Andrewrhchen</s>13<small>3</small>7|*<small>|2</small>0 22:49, 12 May 2009 (UTC) <small><span class="autosigned">—Preceding [[Wikipedia:Signatures|unsigned]] comment added by [[User:Andrewrhchen|Andrewrhchen]] ([[User talk:Andrewrhchen|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Andrewrhchen|contribs]]) </span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned --> <!--Autosigned by SineBot-->

Ok this is going to sound crazy but stick with me. In 2002 you performed this edit [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stephin_Merritt&action=historysubmit&diff=4416634&oldid=209652], in a recent interview Stephin points out all mistakes in his Wikipedia article on of them is that he was not born in 1966. Do you have any clue where you got this information? I'm to figure out how mistaken information can get passed along in article for 8 years, to further complicate it, it looks like for the past 8 years writers have been using this article as a source and quoting the wrong date. == MSU Interview ==

Dear Camembert,

My name is Jonathan Obar [[user:Jaobar]], I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:
* Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
* Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
* All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
* All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
* The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name[[User:Jaobar/Admins_to_Interview_List_1|HERE]] instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --[[User:Jaobar|Jaobar]] ([[User talk:Jaobar|talk]])23:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

== Extended confirmed protection ==

{{ivmbox|1=Hello, Camembert. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

[[WP:BLUELOCK|Extended confirmed protection]] (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned [[WP:EXTENDEDCONFIRMED|"extended confirmed" user right]] was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following [[Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 129#New usergroup with autopromotion to implement arbitration "30-500" bans as a page protection|this community discussion]] with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, [[WP:ECP2016|a request for comment]] established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
* '''Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective'''. It should not be used as a first resort.
* '''A bot will post a notification at [[Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard]] of each use'''. MusikBot currently does this by updating [[User:MusikBot/ECPMonitor/Report|a report]], which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review [[Wikipedia:Protection policy#Extended confirmed protection|the protection policy]] carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. == Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins ==

Hello,

Please note that [[Time-based One-time Password Algorithm|TOTP]] based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your [[Special:Preferences|preferences page]] in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the [[Help:Two-factor authentication|developing help page]] for additional information. '''Important''': Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the [[Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Two-Factor_Authentication_now_available_for_admins|thread on the administrators' noticeboard]]. == A new user right for New Page Patrollers ==

Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}}.

A new user group, [[Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Reviewers|'''New Page Reviewer''']], has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at [[Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/New page reviewer|PERM]]. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available [[Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Templates|here]] but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at [[WT:NPR]]. <small>''(Sent to all admins)''</small>.[[User:MediaWiki message delivery|MediaWiki message delivery]] ([[User talk:MediaWiki message delivery|talk]]) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

==Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity==
[[Image:Information.svg|25px|alt=Information icon]]
Following a [[Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/suspend sysop rights of inactive admins|community discussion]] in June 2011, consensus was reached to [[Wikipedia:Administrators#Procedural removal for inactive administrators|provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year]] (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return&nbsp;if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated&nbsp;should this occur, please post to the [[Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard]] and the userright will be restored per the [[Wikipedia:Bureaucrats#Resysopping|re-sysopping process]] (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at [[WP:RFA]]. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. <!-- Template:Inactive admin -->[[User:MadmanBot|MadmanBot]] ([[User talk:MadmanBot|talk]]) 01:15, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

== Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) ==

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are [[Wikipedia:Administrators#Security|required]] to "have strong passwords and [[Wikipedia:Personal security practices|follow appropriate personal security practices]]." We have [[Special:Permalink/891851004#Return of permissions for compromised administrator accounts|updated]] our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, [[WP:2FA|two-factor authentication]] remains an ''optional'' means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -[[User:Cameron11598|Cameron11598]] 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)</small>

== How we will see unregistered users ==

<section begin=content/>
Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on [[m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation/Improving tools|better tools]] to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can [[m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation|read more on Meta]]. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can [[m:Global message delivery/Targets/Tech ambassadors|subscribe]] to [[m:Tech/News|the weekly technical newsletter]].

We have [[m:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation#IP Masking Implementation Approaches (FAQ)|two suggested ways]] this identity could work. '''We would appreciate your feedback''' on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can [[m:Talk:IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation|let us know on the talk page]]. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
I merged it first, which seemed like the right thing to do, and which would have made sense whether it had been VfD'ed or not. Are VfD'd articles considered locked for editing until the VfD matter is resolved? I believe that the best answer for most controversial articles on VfD is to merge and redirect, particularly in cases where the articles are small by themselves, as was the case in this instance. In my edits to [[Nerstrand, Minnesota]] I mention the school, which not (IMO) encyclopedic in its own right, but the mention does add to the city article.

Thank you.
Regarding consensus to redirect/merge, do you see VfD as a three- (or more-) way vote (keep/delete/merge), with the attendant problems in gaining any sort of consensus and clarity? Or do we vote on VfD first and redirect later? I'm not sure, and I thought by just performing the redirect/merge I could make the vote a little less polar since no material would be lost if the delete were to occur.

Finally, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of "Trinity Anglican Schools" worldwide. In fact, there's one about 10 miles from where I'm sitting that is probably more notable than the one in the article. [[User:UninvitedCompany|UninvitedCompany]] 19:30, 29 Apr 2004 (UTC)

== New administrator activity requirement ==
:No, VfDed articles are not considered locked until the matter is resolved, they can be and are edited, but if you remove the content from such an article, then it becomes much harder for people to review what's being discussed. If it's likely that the article is going to end up being redirected and merged anyway, then that's not a problem, but I don't think it's clear that that will happen here (nobody has actually suggested merging the content in this case, as far as I can see).

{{ivmbox|The administrator policy has been updated with new [[Wikipedia:Administrators#Procedural_removal_for_inactive_administrators|activity requirements]] following a successful [[Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Request for comment on administrator activity requirements|Request for Comment]].
:My view, as you probably know from the VfD page in question, is that there's nothing wrong with these schools having fully blown articles (heck, some of them have bigger populations than hundreds of US towns we've got articles on!), but that's not really the issue here - I just think that when there is disagreement about what should happen to a VfDed page, it's better not to remove content from that page so as to better enable other people to see what the fuss is about. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:
:Oh, I forgot - regards many schools having the same name: the way round that, I suppose, is to just disambiguate as we would any other subject. So this article would be moved to [[Trinity Anglican School (Cairns)]], the one near you would be [[Trinity Anglican School (wherever you are)]] and so on. It's not really a reason to delete/merge, in my opinion. (In the short term, seeing as we don't have many links to the page, it might be OK to just mention all the ones we know of on [[Trinity Anglican School]].) --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]
#Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
#Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

:Love how Wikipedia continues to find new ways to patronise you through automation.
:::Yes, "quick" is probably a bit subjective to draw any scientific conclusions from... still, as you say, if it's playing at different tempi in different players, there's something up with it. I'll hold the .ogg option in reserve, and try to fix the file so it works properly in all players. I made it with [[Lilypond]], which I've had other MIDI problems with, but it should be possible to edit it into shape. Thanks for the response. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]]

:Some years ago, I created the [[WP:RFA]] page to try and make the process of becoming an admin quicker and more transparent. The ideal then was that everyone should be an admin, and the only reason they weren't was that admins could perform certain actions that could only be undone by a developer. Therefore, it made sense to withhold those powers until there was good reason to believe they wouldn't be abused. A village isn't governed in the same way as a megalopolis, no doubt, but this still makes me very sad. --[[User:Camembert|Camembert]] ([[User talk:Camembert#top|talk]])

Talk page archives are here, here, here, here, here and here.

If you're here for anything else and you want to make sure I receive it, it's probably best to use the email link on my user page. I don't regularly check this page.

Sounds intriguing--another one where I have to say I'd be interested if I were still here, but... Good luck with it :) --Camembert

There are no sources or references for this article. Please provide them. TheRingess 08:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My primary reference for the article was most likely the sixth edition of the Grove dictionary. I didn't generally provide references for articles where the information could be checked in any one of a dozen standard reference works--shoddy of me, I know. Anyway, I see somebody else has stuck some references in now, so all is well, I hope. --Camembert

Staccato[edit]

Hello Lee. Image:With staccato.ogg was unfortunately deleted, despite the note on your user page that your contributions are PD. Are you able to reupload it please? Image:Without staccato.ogg was also deleted and has been apparently re-uploaded by someone, but doesn't seem to work. See this version of Staccato for the old links to it. Also, you need to go to Special:Preferences and confirm your email if you want people to contact you that way (as per wikitech-l). Angela. 04:18, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Ives FARC[edit]

The article Charles Ives has been listed on Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates (Wikipedia:Featured article removal candidates/Charles Ives), by me, as it has no inline citations and thus does not meet the featured article criteria at Wikipedia:What is a featured article?: "A featured article has the following attributes" 2.b.

Thanks. Hyacinth 11:47, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I expect this has been dealt with now, but just in case: most of the stuff I wrote in these types of articles could, I believe, be confirmed in any one of a dozen references (Grove should cover most of it; if not, anything I put in the "Further reading" or "External links" sections probably would). I did usually cite quotes and more obscure info exactly (if I didn't, it was an oversight), but giving inline references for info that can be checked in a lot of places can, it seems to me, lead to problems in a project like Wikipedia ("Ludwig van Beethoven was a German (Tovey, 1923) composer (Grove, 1878) of classical music (Rolland, 1903)" etc; I exaggerate, but you get the idea). --Camembert 18:31, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Lee in the pub.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Lee in the pub.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. I read your comment on the Selfmate page regarding "gives checkmate to Black," and now the wording at least makes sense, but I think it's somewhat ambiguous (it confused me, a native-speaking chess player). I think rewording would certainly make it more clear. Thanks! --Romanempire 14:44, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In retrospect, I probably read it as "gives checkmate for black." In any case "checkmates Black" is very clear and I sheepishly see now that you've already changed it. Awesome. --Romanempire 14:47, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mahler (disambiguation)[edit]

A tag has been placed on Mahler (disambiguation), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Housekeeping - cleanup per WP:SUage

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet very basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --Android Mouse Bot 2 07:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Strauss (surname), by Shoeofdeath, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Strauss (surname) fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

Housekeeping - cleanup per WP:SU, all redirects fixed

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Strauss (surname), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Strauss (surname) itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:59, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Stravinsky-petrushka-fanfare.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Moe ε 01:29, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Musical bow.ogg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Musical bow.ogg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Image source problem with Image:6thchord.png[edit]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:6thchord.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Notability of The Midlands[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on The Midlands, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

A tag has been placed on Image:Pauly 1912 selfmate.png, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

image is orphan; position is set with Template:Chess diagram

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on [[Talk:Image:Pauly 1912 selfmate.png|the article's talk page]] explaining your position.

Carlosguitar (ready and willing) 19:32, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Berg_Lulu_alwa_row_process.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:24, 23 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Kelly hi! 03:24, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Madrasi chess[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Madrasi chess, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? SyG (talk) 10:06, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Glenn Gould, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. The article Ladislav Kupkovič has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

As the article says "not a very well-known composer" - and no references. Not notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Camembert,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review).

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, Camembert. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Camembert.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM.

User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Information icon Established policy provides for the removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. Your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to the required activity level before the beginning of January 2023.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to engage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for re-engaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to re-engage with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 08:33, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Love how Wikipedia continues to find new ways to patronise you through automation.
Some years ago, I created the WP:RFA page to try and make the process of becoming an admin quicker and more transparent. --Camembert (talk)
