Stargate Universe is the working title of a science fiction television series, part of the Stargate franchise.[1] Produced by MGM, the show was set to enter pre-production in March 2007, entering production in mid 2007 with a projected premiere in early 2008.[2] It is anticipated that Stargate Universe will be filmed and produced in Vancouver, Canada, as with the preceding series.[citation needed]

According to show runner Robert C. Cooper, the "series maintains the spirit of Stargate, but opens up a whole new 'universe'."[3] It is currently being developed as "a completely separate, third entity" - as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1.

It has been rumoured, and denied, that Michael Shanks, who plays Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1, has been offered the lead in the new series.[4]
