David Rubenstein is the co-founder of The Carlyle Group, an American private equity firm. Rubenstein grew up in Baltimore, and graduated from Duke University magna cum laude in 1970. He earned his law degree from the University of Chicago Law School in 1973. Prior to starting Carlyle, Rubenstein was a domestic policy advisor to President Jimmy Carter and worked in private practice in Washington, D.C. He lives in Bethesda, Maryland.

Rubenstein is also active in philanthropy, and has made large gifts to Duke's Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University.

More recently he is the president of the Save Darfur Coalition a bipartisan group urging lawmakers to end what he refers to as the genocide in Sudan.
