Erotas (Greek: Έρωτας) (translated Love or Sex) is a Greek television series surrounding the private lives of wealthy Athenian families. Template:Spoiler

Ratings

It began airing on ANT1, on September 8, 2005 on the ANT1 network. The show has proven quite popular, beating all other shows in its timeslot except vera sto dexi. Its popularity has been reflected by airing it internationally on the ANT1 Pacific network in Australia and it is also seen in over 15 countries, including across Canada and the United States via the Odyssey Network. Replacing re-runs of Lampsi and Kalimera Zoi, the show has attracted quite a lot of fans outside Greece as it is aired at the 7 p.m. timeslot (like Greece).

The show suffered a significant drop in ratings of 15% after Noni Ιoannidou's character Vera left the show in November 2006, the writers have now admitted that they regretting killing her character, as they knew Vera was one of the most popular characters, but did not predict this sharp decline in ratings.

Background

The plot itself surrounds the highs and lows of Myrto's big family of children and ex-husbands. Their storylines often revolve around topics such as murder, kidnapping, espionage, and fraud. The writers integrate themes of love and passion and dialogue this theme through the trials, tribulations and daily lives of their main characters.

Criticism

Almost every cast member has been framed for a crime, and many sent to jail, which has sparked criticism against the show as the characters are setting a bad example for the community. Other criticisms of the show are that in the second season, many characters in Stefanos' family were killed. The list includes, Vera, Olga, and his half-sister,sister and father. Furthermore, central character Aphrodite's husband was also killed along with Hector's secretary, along with various other minor characters that were killed only weeks after being introduced. The writers have promised to lower the amount of death on the show next season, as in only 2 seasons of the show over 15 characters have died, this is more than Lost in its first two seasons.

Setting

Erotas is set in the Northern suburbs of Athens, including Sounio and also on the Greek island of Mykonos where Myrto and her family own one of two Antigoni resort. A third resort in Agia Napa, Cyprus, was burned to the ground after a suspicious fire. In May 2007, Myrto announced that she will be opened another location of the Antigones Hotel corporation in Spetses.

Myrtle and Hector enjoy this life, but not for long, as Ioulia sets out to destroy their marriage. Hector has an affair with his old flame and she makes sure that Myrtle finds out about it writing a vivid diary detailing the affair after it is over. Due to this and the fact that Myrtle also caught Hector cheating on her with Stella, a barmaid from Mykonos, they divorce and part their seperate ways. Myrtle meet Lefteri, a man at 10 years her junior and they fall passionately in love, however she is hesistant to commit to him, not because of his convict past but rather the age difference. The night before her wedding to Lefteri, Myrtle has an affair with Hector, despite this, Myrtle and Lefteri still marry as Myrtle realises that he only went to bed with her, because he didn't approve of Lefteri being near his daughter. Hector also had an affair with his secretary planning to marry her after she fell pregnant, but they cut ties when she miscarried. Furthermore, Ioulia later cut herself on a poisonous vile, that paralysed her from the waist down for 6 months, she went overseas for treatment, and hasn't been heard from since.

Antigoni and Vera

Myrtle's daughter Antigoni was taken from her by her best-friend, Vera, 15 years ago, after Antigoni wondered off during a fight between Myrtle and her first husband, Stefanos. Vera was also having a 20 year affair with Stefanos during Myrtle's and Stefanos's marriage, she marries Stefanos early in the first season. Soon after, Antigoni returns and despises her biological parents as she was led to believe by Vera that they treated her badly. When she realises that her parents truly love her, and missed her deeply, the secret of her kidnapping is exposes and she is ostrisised by the family. Antigoni defends her saying that she is the only mother she has ever known, however Myrtle and Vera's friendship is ruined forever. Later in the season, Antigoni marries Alexandros, Stefanos's henchman against her parents will, whom she only met months before their marriage. He is a golddigger, and Vera encouraged him to marry Antigoni as she is seeking revenge on Stefanos for ignoring her after the secret of the kidnapping is exposed. Vera is persistant with Stefanos refusing to let him push her out of his life and trying to make their marriage work.

Pavlos and Christina

Pavlos is Myrtle's son, and serves as the comic relief during this season. His relationship with Christina changes significantly throughout the season. It begins with her having complete control, but when Pavlos reverses the power he cheats on her with Hector's secretary's cousin. However, she moves back to London to continue with her studies and Pavlos and Christina are reunited at the end of the season.

Renos and Martha

Renos is Myrtle's son, at the start of the first season, he is having an affair with his childhood flame, Martha. She is married to Andreas, living in Mykonos in a loveless marriage, that she only went through with because she believed that her son, Panayioti was his. A paternity test is done and it is realised that Renos is the father of the child, and Martha and Renos officially become a couple. Within months they marry and Renos pressures Martha to make the move to Athens with her child. She reluctantly accepts, and Renos buys a new house which he tours with his son and his father, Stefanos. Panayioti falls off a third storey balcony during the tour and dies. Martha leaves Renos blaming him for the accident, she soon makes plans to move away from him and his family and make a new start. Shortly before she leaves she realises that she is still in love with Renos but decides to move forward with the leave as it will be the only way to leave behind the death of her son, during her farewell party her psychotic ex-husband sets a bomb, in the season finale all the core-characters are in the vicinity of the accident except Hector and Myrtle who run towards the house wondering if anyone has survived.

Martha and Basiliki

At the start of the second season months have passed since the tragic explosion at Martha's farewell party. Andreas, who sets a bomb in Martha's house makes a last minute leap into the house upon seeing young Eva's face. He dies instantly while everybody else in the house miraculously survives. Martha disappears from the show and has moved away to Kriti. Her mother, Basiliki, continues to run the bar that she bought from long-standing friend Dida, at the end of season one. Overwhelmed by all the losses of her family, Basiliki departs from Mykonos, renting her house to two young employee's at "Antigones Resort" -Nadia and Philippos. She joins Martha in Kriti and disappears from the show altogether.

Vera and Antigoni

Vera is released from prison in the season premiere and seeks to foil her estranged husband, Stephanos Doukas, by pretending to have developed a life-threatening cancer leaving her about 6 months to live. She fabricates this story with the help of Antigone and Alexandros, who help her to deceive the entire family by paying a fraudulent doctor to lie about her diagnosis. When the doctor's office disappears the truth is uncovered and uncovers Vera's sadistic plot. She is ostracized by the entire family and commits suicide as a final demonstration. Antigone, blames her parents Myrto and Stefanos for never accepting Vera into the family, driving her to commit suicide, and leaves Greece and the Doukas family permanently venturing off to London. Her new flame, Philipos, tracks her down in France, where they become united, and he too disappears from the show. However, Antigoni was reintroduced into the show at the end of the second season, having finally gotten over Vera's death and regretting abandoning her family due to her griefd.

Alexandros and Antigoni, and working his way back into the Doukas family

Alexandros is in hot pursuit of his estranged wife Antigone. He no longer has the DVD controlling the Doukas family and protecting Antigone from incarceration for the shooting down of an innocent lawyer (happened in Season 1). He does not make much progress, but eventually reports to Stephanos that he has made contact with Antigone and settled his financial claims with her. For a temporary time, he acquires Antigone's shares in the Doukas' family multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company. He uses these shares as a way to make amends with Stephanos after willingly disobeying Stephanos' wishes to desert Antigone. Alexandros proves his loyalty and gains Stephanos friendship when he rescues Pavlo from criminals who have kidnapped both him and Christina in an effort to thwart Myrto's testimony at the trial convicting Aphroditi Apergi of the first degree murder of her late husband, Dr. Papadatos.

Myrtle/Lefteri/Hector/Aphrodite

Philipos' friend Nadia, has an interest in Myrto's husband Lefteri, and when Myrto and Lefteri break up after she continually refuses to have a child with him, Nadia and Lefteri have sex. However, Lefteri realises that he is still in love with his wife and tells her everything and they soon reunite. Later in the season, Lefteri and Myrtle break up several times due to Myrtle's very close platonic relationship with her ex-husband Hector threatening Lefteri. Myrtle is also kidnapped part-way through the season by Aphrodite's late-husbands associates so she doesn't reveal the evidence in court that she has to prove that Aphrodite didn't murder her late-husband. They also adopt a seven year old boy, Andreas, who is kidnapped by his birthmother after she regrets placing the child up for adoption. The child's birthfather is also found and the birthmother and father have decided to fight for custordy of the child against adoptive parents Myrtle and Hector. With the drug-addicted birth mother even checking into rehabilition to repair her image as a parent. Hector's new girlfriend also found the close relationship between Myrtle and Hector threatening, and after being framed for murder by her elderly husband (whom she had stood by despite the lack in physical attraction between them for many years, because she pitied him), making an alliance with her late-husband's son, Angelos, to hide her from Hector soon after she is released from prison, she flees the country for London. She also defends abandoning Hector by saying that she had to protect her child from the jailbirds demanding money from her, and also the fact that he said he wouldn't be with her if it wasn't for her being pregnant. Aphrodite is still heard frequently in phone calls, and Hector has now discovered her rough whereabouts, with the help of Stefanos. Aphrodite recently gave birth in London, informing Angelos by phone. Angelos has fallen in love with Aphrodite and the 2 have started a romantic relationship. Lefteri also beats Andreas' biological mother, Alexandra, after it is almost certain that she will be taking her son back, he also sleeps with an unidentified woman, which has forced Myrtle to consider divorce again. He also begins drinking, and hits Myrtle while heavily intoxicated after she tells him that she turned to Hector for support because he is the only person that she can turn to in this difficult time.

Stefanos and Nadia

Stefanos and Nadia grow close in the second half of the season as both of them feel very lonely, they begin a relationship and soon after marry in secret from their friends and family. The fact that they were married was uncovered however when Stefanos and Nadia became entangled in a murder mystery involving Stefanos' sister. However, it turned out that long-time maid, Olga had committed the murder. Stefanos and Nadia however, continue to face problems in their marriage after Nadia begins work at Stefanos' chemical factory, much to the dismay of his son Renos, who has a romantic crush on her. Furthermore, Stefanos reintroduces drug trafficing within his business, and information about this has been caught on tape by Peggy and Ari, who are trying to expose these dealings. (see below)

Renos/Anna/Fedra Love Triangle

Renos embarks on a relationship with new character Anna at the beginning of the season, however he soon discovers that he is in love with her sister, Fedra. Both Fedra and Renos realise their love but can't be together as Fedra accidentally fell pregnant with Constantinos in a one-night stand, and they decide to do the right thing and marry, even after the baby is lost. Renos tries to stop Fedra on the day of her wedding but is unsuccessful. Renos breaks up with Anna unable to withstand the relationship with her any longer, soon after Renos and Fedra finally end up together, much to the dismay of Anna and Constantinos. Anna makes it her mission to get back at them by any means possible, and has Fedra raped in front of Renos in an attempt to dismantle their relationship. She succeeds, but Fedra soon discovers that her sister employed the rapists when she finds one of them in her house talking to her sister. Anna then flees town to go and live with her father, while Fedra leaves behind everything that has gone wrong in the past year to start a new life with none other than her ex-husband Konstantinos. New neighbours move in next to Renos, who are taping him, in an attempt to expose his father's drug ring within the family business. They are related to the person who took the blame when Renos was convicted due to his father's drug trafficing earlier this year.

Pavlos and Christina

Pavlos and Christina's relationship becomes much more serious after he is diagnosed with a potentially fatal blood condition, the first time they don't make it to the alter and both decide to not turn up to their wedding. The second time, Christina goes to the wrong church on the day of the wedding, however they finally marry and soon after they marry, a male donor is found for Pavlos' condition and all is well. However, Christina quickly finds herself infactuated with the donor and Pavlos with the donor's girlfriend. Myrtle is aware of the affairs that have risen from these infactuations, and is deeply worried about both of the newlyweds.

The shows creators had anticipated a solid 8 year run at the begginning of the series in 2005, without making an official contract. The show is currently renewed through 2008, however this depends on ratings.
