Ballyfermot (Baile Formaid in Irish) is a predominantly working-class suburb in south west Dublin, Ireland. It is approximately 8 kilometers from the city centre, and lies just south of the Phoenix Park. It is bordered to the north by Chapelizod, to the south by Walkinstown. Other adjoining or nearby suburbs are Inchicore, Palmerstown, Clondalkin, Neilstown, and Bluebell.

Le Fanu Park

The name comes originally from the Irish Baile Diarmuid (town of Dermot), after a Celtic chieftain who owned the land in the 12th century. The 19th century ghost-story writer Sheridan Le Fanu may have lived in the area. Le Fanu Road is named after him. Le Fanu Park is a name which has been given to a large green area on Le Fanu Road. It was alway known as The Lawn and people still call it that. On the lawn at the south end is a mound which covers a graveyard. It was an old graveyared which hadn't had anybody buried there for a long time. It was called St Lawrence's. It was decided to just cover it in. This also had been a popular place for kids to play. Close to the graveyard was an old farm which became deserted and a large area of wild land known as the Backers. It's covered in housing now.

Ballyfermot De La Salle, (formed in 1953 as Ballyfermot Gaels) play their games in Glenaulin Park also known as the Californina Hills or Calliers for short to the people of Ballyfermot . The California Hills was a large grassy hilly area which faced Rossmore Road and stretched to Palmerstown. It now has a motorway running across it and most of the hills are gone but part of it still remains and children still play there. They have 2 senior teams, the first and second team, which play in Dublin's AFL Division 6 and Division 11 respectively. Another area nearby was the Gaels. It had football pitches and parts of it were overgrown with trees. Like the Calliers it was a popular place for kids playing and for boys and girls lying in the long grass on warm sunny days. There is a lot of housing on it now.

Liffey Gaels are also based in Ballyfermot, and play their home games in East Timor Park, Sarsfield Road.

In Theatre notable former residents are playwright and Aosdána member Jimmy Murphy and Fair City actor Pat Nolan.
