Janet Jackson is the self-titled debut album by American R&B/pop singer Janet Jackson.
Released in 1982 (see 1982 in music), it sold poorly but featured Jackson's first top one hundred pop singles, "Young Love" (a top ten R&B single) and "Come Give Your Love to Me" (a top twenty R&B single produced by Foster Sylvers).
Jackson said that her music career was forced by her father at first. Joe Jackson would make her sing fluffy pop/light R&B songs that she didn't feel comfortable singing. However, it became the tenth biggest selling R&B album of 1982.[1]
This and Jackson's 1984 follow-up Dream Street would be precursors to Jackson's groundbreaking sound with the Control album in 1986.
On April 24, 2007, iTunes added all of Jackson's A&M albums to their short Janet Jackson selection, with the exception of Dream Street which was added three weeks later.

Miscellanea
- Janet didn't want any of her family members to participate in the making of the album. She wanted it to be her own project, judged by its own merits.
- On the cover photo Janet is photographed in the swimming pool of the Jackson family's home.
- The CD album version of "Say You Do" is the "Special Remixed Version" (6:50) from the single vinyl release instead of the original album version (5:15), which can be found on the vinyl album.
