Denbigh High School (Welsh: Ysgol Uwchradd Dinbych) is an English medium county comprehensive school in Denbigh.

Overview

It is situated on Ruthin Road, Denbigh in North Wales and caters for approximately 1000 pupils from the ages of 11 to 18. In year 8 classes there can be as many as 36 pupils in a class at one time. In normal cases this is not allowed by governing bodies, but the school has 'got around' this clause by having an assistant in the class. While to an outside observer this may seem sensible, the helper has limited control over the class.

Most of the school children come from Denbigh, St Asaph and the surrounding villages. The school has an annual sponsored walk, held in early September. For the past two years, it has been a 13.5 kilometre walk around the Clwydian Range. The walk is used to raise funds for the school, which has a very limited income.

The school was originally situated on two separate sites with the first 3 years on the existing site and the older years at an older building on Middle Lane, which is situated half a mile away. This Middle Lane site was built in 1903 as The County School and Denbigh High ceased using it in 1983. The site then became a Youth Club and is used for Teacher Training and Education Administration.

Controversy

In recent years, Denbigh High School has featured in the press several times, most notably for the controversial ban of charity bracelets and pupils vandalising buses. The school also hit local headlines recently after teachers staged a one-day strike in a dispute over pay (April 24, 2008).

Headmistress

As of 2007 the Headmistress is Alison Duncan. Previous Headmasters include:

Alison Duncan tried to change the school badge logo but this was not to the taste of the pupils so the badge is now the original gold and maroon colour.

Funding status

The school, unfortunately for many of its pupils, has a serious lack of funding, and any funding that does come seems to be diverted towards less important features, such as the state of the art secretarial office, a waiting room, and a large plasma television, while most of the computer systems are out of date and certain I.T teachers cannot do there jobs according to many pupils of the school.

Brondyffryn relationship

A relationship with Ysgol Plas Brondyffryn has lasted for years, and in 2003 a new Secondary Dept. of Brondyffryn was built behind Denbigh High, and caters for 56 youngsters from throughout North and Mid Wales along with parts of Cheshire and even Liverpool. The project increases integration between some autistic teenagers and youngsters from the local comprehensive.
