Liam Spencer (1964-) is a English artist. He was born in Burnley, Lancashire, and hence a lot of his paintings focus on areas in and around Manchester, such as Crown Chippy, Rawtenstall (2003), "Salford Panorama" (2000), "Time Square, New York" (2003). He has however, painted other parts of the world, such as a number of paintings which focus on New York City, Venice, Hong Kong, Shanghai and some in France and Spain. He is known for painting urban landscapes, and focussing on rain scenes.A popular format for his paintings have been the "Panoramas" long thin paintings that show popular scenes. A small number of paintings from film stills exist, a few watercolours can also be found. Spencer's work is exhibited in a number of art galleries, especially in the Manchester area. His most prominent exhibition was in 2000 in the Lowry Centre art gallery in Salford, and a number of his works also hang permanently in the Manchester Art Gallery. A retrospective of Liams works in 2006 at The City of Manchester Art Gallery proved a great success. This co-incided with a short 10 minute documentary aired on the BBC series Inside Out that showed several of the collections of Liams work and aimed to show the incredible popularity of Liams work. The programme highlighted the lengths collectors would go to, to acquire his works, examples included flying to Germany and queueing overnight outside a gallery. Over the years several collectors have collected in depth, with some collections holding in excess of 50 paintings.The largest collection is believed to be part of the Elspeth and Imogen Turner Collection (Lancashire, England). Liam Spencer still resides in the North West showing on occasions work in his studio close to Rawenstall.
