Wrenthropes local failing team "The Rangers" have been on the rise over the past few seasons after an up rising lift from Barnsley 5 0 member Adam Bowler, his presence was instantly felt in the squad after he scored 2 own goals in 10 minutes.
Wrenthorpe Rangers have an established under 18 age group nicknamed the blues. This side has been around for many years and has developed has time has gone on. For the majority of the time Wrenthorpe Rangers reds have been the better side enjoying more victories and the blues have been determined to overcome this for some time.

The Rangers are due to go on tour in 09 travelling to Poland to play the english 11 man team Polish Britons.
This summer has been a very transitional period for the Blues. They have been very busy this summer by bringing in many new faces to help strengthen their challenge for silverware in the forthcoming season. They have added strength upfront and out wide by capturing Jordan 'onion bag' Howson on a free. Also the addition of Alex Thompson was essential in adding some extra firepower to the line - up. Joe Davies has also been snapped up to add some much needed experience to the Blues. And finally the signing of versatile Mark Sherwood will be vital as he will be able to provide quality in many areas of the pitch. However, Wrens will start the new campaign without the formidable Hemsly due to him being prised away from the club after he was unsettled by all the media attention that his impressive performances were creating.

As well as making new signings this summer the blues have been renewing existing players contracts which is important as the new season is just around the corner. The likes of Adam Rushton, Tom Bailes and Dan Hilditch have all renewed their contracts to stay at the club who have all promised the fans an exciting season with fast flowing attacking football.

Wrens have also added reinforcement to the subs bench with the return of Dan Gardner, James Tattersfield and Tom Simpson after long absences. Gardner returned after a long period playing abroad to boost Wrens defence if he can find the scoring form he displayed last season. Tattersfield is back after his disappearance act (some believe he moved to China) and is fired up for the new season and will keep a close eye on proceedings from the subs bench. Simpson has also returned after a long break and provides a Berbatov role upfront.

In addition, ‘player of the season’ John Robinson has agreed to stay at the club after many people thought he was destined for a higher level which almost lured him away from Wrenthorpe. Jason Robinson is also still at the club after no offers were received for the left winger from any other clubs. Reports around the club portrayed the winger to be on a ‘free transfer’ to any clubs willing to take him, however the club confirmed in a local newspaper that no offers had been made.

Rumours had also suggested that Si Rayner had been relieved of his duties of club captain and the club were on the verge of appointing his successor. But after a string of impressive performances during pre season Simon Rayner has officially been named captain for the 2008/2009 season. In doing so Simon has also earned himself a new nickname. He is now known as 'Sergeant Si' by his team mates. In a recent interview, Rayner stated that he is ‘ready to lead his troops into battle’. Rayner who hasn’t scored for the club is determined to end his miserable goal drought as he enters his 5th season at the club and said: "''if I fail to score all season again, then I will shave all my hair off!''" The ‘sergeant’ revealed that it has taken him 3 long years to form and sculpture his iconic yellow mohican and he believes he has beaten both Tattersfield and Gardner in a long battle over the best hair design.

Wrens are the bookies favourite to win the league however they face fierce competition from the other teams. Although a top 4 finish may ensure they will qualify to travel abroad for international matches in the summer.

After a disapointing start to the 2008/09 campaign, Wrens have had to cope with bad meadia attention relating to the behaviour of substitute/centre midfielder Dan Hilditch. The media attention is surrounding his dismissal at the weekend after foul language caused him to see the red card shown. However, futher embarrassment was ensured when a cry from the supporters left Hilditch speechless. A bellowing supporter cried "''you stupid, stupid little kid!!''" which echoed around the ground. Silence fell and Hilditch left the pitch red faced with a red card leaving his team mates to valiently battle on. The 'stupid kid' may now face a long suspension, although a break for Hilditch may be welcome as he is a keen fisherman and the time off would allow him to persue his dream of catching a rainbow trout.

John "The pro-defender" Robinson is due to leave the club in 2010 to join his rival team Doncaster Rovers.

Wrenthorpe is a village north-west of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, England. It is located in the Rhubarb Triangle.

Sport

Wrenthropes local failing team "The Rangers" have been on the rise over the past few seasons after an up rising lift from Barnsley 5 0 member Adam Bowler, his presence was instantly felt in the squad after he scored 2 own goals in 10 minutes.

The Rangers are due to go on tour in 09 travelling to Poland to play the english 11 man team Polish Britons.

John "The pro-defender" Robinson is due to leave the club in 2010 to join his rival team Doncaster Rovers.

History

Although earlier remains, such as Roman coins and pottery, have been found in the area, the current settlement dates from after the Doomsday Book's compilation in 1086.

Pottery has played an important role in Wrenthorpe's history, building from the presence of a few potters in the 15th century, to a thriving cottage industry that peaked in the 17th century, before declining over the course of the 18th. Such was the scale of pottery production, the village became known as "Potovens," attributed to the kilns used to fire finished pottery. Today reminders of this heritage can be found in local names, such as "Potovens Lane," together with the remains of pottery and clay tobacco pipes that can be found in the soil.

As the potteries went into decline coal mining, already present on a smaller scale providing fuel for the potters' kilns, expanded to meet the needs of the industrial revolution. Agriculture also grew more important to the area.

During the 19th and early 20th century rope and textile production joined coal and agriculture as Wrenthorpe's major industries, both disappearing over the course of the 20th century. Rhubarb forcing houses have also been located in Wrenthorpe, contributing to West Yorkshire's extensive Rhubarb growing industry.

Education

Wrenthorpe is home to both state and private primary schools and a private secondary school.

The local state primary schools are Wrenthorpe Primary School and Jerry Clay Lane Junior & Infants School. As there are no state secondary schools in Wrenthorpe most pupils progress to the nearby Outwood Grange College upon reaching the age of 11.

Silcoates School provides a private education catering for ages 2 though to 18. The associated Sunny Hill House School provides private education for 2-7 year olds.

Recreation and sport

Wrenthorpe Park is a large public park which directly connects to a series of meadows in neighbouring Alverthorpe. The park's facilities include hard tennis courts, a bowling green, children's play area, football pitch and car parking.

In addition a smaller recreation ground, with a football pitch, is located in the centre of the village at the foot of Sunny Hill on Wrenthorpe Lane.

Wrenthorpe Cricket Club has senior teams competing in the Central Yorkshire Cricket League and Wakefield Cricket League. The club also has a series of junior teams ranging from under 9's to under 17's.[1]

The Wrenthorpe Rangers are a local Football Club with junior teams starting at U6 through to U18's for both boys and girls. They currently have 2 open age teams which compete in the Wakefield Sunday league. Wrenthorpe also has an established under 18's football team nicknamed the blues.
