Miley, the series' protagonist, leads a double life as an ordinary teenager by day and a successful pop singer named "Hannah Montana" by night. On the show, none of the characters know of her alter ego except for her close friends and family members.

At the beginning of the first season, she reveals her big secret to her best friends, Oliver Oken and Lilly Truscott.[2][6] In the second season, she enters her brother's high school, alongside Lilly and Oliver.[7] Due to her double life, Miley is often in awkward situations (such as sleeping in late on a school day after a concert or going on date as Miley to a Hannah Montana concert). Miley also appears to have interest in a boy named Tray.[8]

Amber Addison (Shanica Knowles) and Ashley Dewitt (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle) are two of Miley's enemies who are mean to her in school but, as viewers later find out, are fans of Hannah Montana. Her best friend is Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment). Miley does not tell Amber and Ashley her secret. Later, she gets more accustomed to her school and even meets a famous teen actor named Jake Ryan (Cody Linley) with whom she has an on-off relationship.

Miley's comic persona is known for being deadpan. She also has a few phrases that she often uses, such as "sweet niblets!" (usually when frustrated or in panic), "say what?!" and "oh, yeah, I went there."

She often has to contend with people liking Hannah Montana but disliking her as Miley,and vice versa.

Like many girls her age, Miley tends to get jealous from time to time, especially when she feels that members of her family or friends are being taken away from her. She sometimes resorts to extreme measures to remedy these situations.

Miley also has a stuffed bear named Beary, which is seen in many episodes. She has had Beary ever since she was two (as was revealed in "Me and Rico Down by the Schoolyard") and according to Miley, has been with her through everything. Beary is destroyed in the episode "Bye Bye Ball", when Jackson tries to kill a wasp with it, but, later in the episode, he fixes the stuffed animal to make Miley happy.

Miley imagines three alternate looks for Hannah and actually manages to adopt one; "Half Dolla Hannah", a Hip hop stylist; "Techno Hannah", a Retro stylist; and unruly, angry punk-type personality, "Anti-Hannah." She later decides to stay with the original look for Hannah, as that's the one that Hannah's fans like.

Miley is a fan of Jonas Brothers, but, after her father spends some time with them, Miley dislikes them. She and Lilly pretend dressing as male singers as "Milo and Otis".[9]

It is revealed in the episode "Song Sung Bad" that Miley has arachnophobia and in the episode "Joannie B. Goode," it is also revealed that she has ophidiophobia.

Miley's romantic relationships

  • Travis Brody: First appears in Hannah Montana: The Movie. He became as a childhood friend with Miley. They liked each other but they didn't tell, until they met later. but it did not work out because they live on other sides of the country.
  • Oliver Mitchel Musso: (Hannah Montana): In the first two episodes, "Lilly, Do You Want to Know a Secret" and "Miley Get Your Gum", Oliver had a crush on Hannah Montana until he found out she was Miley.
  • Derek Austin Butler: First appears in My Best Friend's Boyfriend. He is Lucas' cousin, which Lilly finds Miley for a double date. He was afraid of scary movies, making it the worst date of Miley's life.
  • Rico Moises Arias (Hannah Montana): Rico has a crush on her starting in the episode "Me and Rico down the schoolyard," in which Rico kisses her. Also in season 2, she becomes Rico's rival.
  • Jake Ryan Cody Linley (Hannah Montana): First appears in New Kid in School. Miley has a crush on Jake, but she was jealous of his girlfriend in People Who Use People, and tries to make him jealous; later, they kiss. She performed in a show with Jake and develops feelings for him. But in Achy Jakey Heart, Miley tells Jake her secret, that she is Hannah Montana. At first, he doesn't get angry, but when he got angry at the end, their relationship ended. Later he goes from Miley's ex-Boyfriend to her friend.
  • Trey Michael McShae: Trey is a boy Miley meets on the beach, during the opening of a new playground. His parents are sensible and make fun of Miley for her Tennessee accent, because they are so smart.
  • Willis: Willis appears in episode People Who Use People. He was used by Miley to make Jake Ryan jealous, but it turns out he was only 11(and three-quarters as Willis said) years old (he told Miley that he was a "Senior", and he was tall for his age)
