Annabeth Chase is a fictional character in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.

Character's background

Annabeth Chase is the daughter of Athena and is a half-blood. Frederick Chase is her father. Since she is a daughter of Athena, she was not physically born, but is a literal 'brain child', and was delivered to her father in a golden basket by Zephyr, the West Wind. When she was seven she ran away from home. On her journey she met Luke, Thalia, and Grover Underwood. Together, they traveled to Camp Half-Blood. On their way, they were chased by a horde of monsters. As they were passing through New York, they came across a Cyclops who held them up so that the other monsters could catch up to them.Annabeth saved them. Thalia sacrificed her life so that Luke and Annabeth could safely get into camp. She lived at Camp Half-Blood for seven years, and in that time, developed a crush on Luke. She was also given a Yankee's cap by her mother Athena, which makes her turn invisible as long as she wore it, and a celestial bronze knife.

It has been shown that Annabeth is not very steady with her father and step-family. According to her, her father was not very happy when she appeared at his steps as a baby in a golden cradle, and tends to look at her as a nuisance. Her step-siblings don’t seem to like her and feel afraid of Annabeth. Her stepmother seems to hate her, and feels that she endangers the family. At the end of The Lightning Thief, Annabeth returned to her family to see if she could get along with them. She was able to stay with them for what looks like a year, but it is unknown if her feeling towards her family have changed. However, in The Titans Curse, her father and stepmother seems to care for her deeply, and her father helps fight off Kronos's army to save Annabeth.

Annabeth is a very good fighter, and has been shown to be able to think on her feet in tight situations. Despite this, Annabeth dreams of being an architect, and the story has made many references to this. In The Lightning Thief, she enjoys the 3-D holographic Sim City at the Lotus Hotel and Casino, and The Sea of Monsters it was shown that Annabeth’s greatest dream is to redesign the whole world to make it better, make Luke good again, and be accepted by her mother and father together.

In the beginning of The Lightning Thief, Annabeth is shown to dislike Percy. This is partly because she is let down from her belief that Percy is the one in the prophecy. She also thinks he is weak. He is also the son of Poseidon and she is a daughter of Athena who have a rivalry with each other and might have been a bit annoyed that he sprays her with water in the bathroom incident (when he causes a bathroom to erupt with water from all the pipes, soaking Clarisse and her gang, but also getting Annabeth in the process).

By the end of the book the two have become close friends, which continues on into the next two books. In The Titan's Curse, there are suggestions of some romance between her and Percy, although this is complicated by her lingering feelings towards Luke and the fact that her mother Athena disapproves of her "friendship" with Percy. But in The Battle of The Labyrinth Annabeth finally expresses her feelings for Percy by kissing him, despite her lingering feelings toward Luke.

Annabeth hasn't admitted her feelings for Percy, but throughout the series Percy and Annabeth hint at a feelings between the two.

In the books

The Lightning Thief

Annabeth first appears in The Lightning Thief and is twelve years old. She initially was portrayed as the "wise girl".

She first meets Percy Jackson after he was attacked by the Minotaur. She was feeding him ambrosia and nectar in the Big House. The first words she spoke to him were: "You drool when you sleep." Afterward, she heard that he was going on quest and wanted to go along, thinking Percy was "the one" from Chiron's prophecy. Together, Annabeth, Percy, and Grover went searching for Zeus's lightning bolt. Through the book, Annabeth shows her unique intelligence, which she inherited from her mother, and also her arachnophobia that she shared with all her siblings on her mother's side (originating from the story of Arachne and Athena). At the end of the book, she is deeply hurt by Luke's betrayal.

The Sea of Monsters

Annabeth returns once again to help Percy save the camp, though this time they are friends, as opposed to the tension because of their parents in Book One. Together they journey to the Sea of Monsters (also known as the Bermuda Triangle by mortals) to find the Golden Fleece (Needed to save Camp Half Blood) and save Grover from Polyphemus a huge cyclops. She hears the Sirens' song and realizes that her fatal flaw is hubris. She also learns to accept Tyson, Percy's half-brother, who is a young Cyclops, after having a bad experience with one long ago.

The Titan's Curse

Annabeth was kidnapped along with the goddess Artemis and had to be saved by Percy, Thalia, Grover, and the huntress Zoe Nightshade. Unlike other books, Annabeth's role was quite minimal. It is hinted in this book that there will be a romantic future for her and Percy. Aphrodite, goddess of love, also convinced Percy (Perseus) about his love with Annabeth, though she also made it excessibly harder for them to fall in love.

The Battle of the Labyrinth

By this Book Annabeth is fourteen. Annabeth was supposed to meet Percy for a "date" after his orientation, but plans changed on count of "empousai" (empuses), Rachel, and Percy setting the school on fire. She gets terribly jealous with the fact of Percy being friends with another girl. They cut their afternoon and head to Camp Half-Blood. There, Percy and Annabeth battle gigantic scorpions and find an entrance into the Labyrinth. She realizes that Luke may try to use this entrance to invade Camp.

Annabeth leads the quest into the Labyrinth. She broke the rule of only two companions on a quest, by choosing Percy, Grover, and Tyson. Annabeth descends into the Labyrinth with Percy, Grover, and Tyson to find a way to stop Kronos' evil forces from entering the borders of Camp Half-Blood by searching for its inventor, Daedalus. The prophecy the Oracle gave her appears to have scared her and she refuses to say the last line. As they go into the Labyrinth, they face many wonders. Annabeth faces the Sphinx and finds the riddles (which are actually factual questions) not challenging and an insult to her intellect. They escape the claws of the Sphinx and continue on to find Hephaestus so he can tell them about where to find Daedalus.

They find him in one of his forges and he sends them on another mission to find out whose using one of his forges. Along the way, Grover and Tyson split up from them, to follow a trail Grover is sure that leads to Pan, the missing god. She and Percy discover monsters using the forge to create Kronos' scythe. During an epic battle, Percy tells Annabeth to escape while she can, but she doesn't want to leave him. She angrily kisses him for luck and vanishes under her invisibility cap. She is very distraught after thinking that Percy had died when Mount St. Helens' erupted, but when she sees him at Camp during his supposed funeral, she quickly goes from crying to furious. Percy was marooned on the island of Ogygia where a beautiful teenage girl, Calypso, a daughter of Atlas, had been cursed to stay for eternity alone - with exceptions. The curse also causes once every few thousand years, a new half-blood will wash onto the island's shores, just the sort of the boy she "can't help but fall in love with". When Annabeth realizes this on her own, she becomes irate. When Percy tells her and Chiron he plans to take along the human Rachel Elizabeth Dare to help them on their way through the labyrinth (Rachel has a rare ability to see through the Mist), Annabeth becomes even angrier, jealous and hurt by the way Rachel and Percy are hanging out together.

The three of them discover Luke and the monster, Antaeus and are able to escape the clutches of the monsters thanks to Mrs O'Leary. They find Daedalus' workshop, but discover he has already helped Luke. They escape once again and head back to Camp. She finds out Luke has become Kronos' vessel and is very sad and cries, making Percy feel bad. With Grover and Rachel's help, they find Pan. He speaks to all of them, and gives her a cryptic message about the future. When they return to camp, they battle, with all the camp's help, Luke's forces back into the Labyrinth, leaving two casualties. Annabeth plans to stay at Camp a little while longer before heading home to San Francisco, and decides to come back to camp next year. Annabeth is last seen in Battle of the Labyrinth, leaving Percy on the hill, not looking back.

Power/Abilities

  • Like other half-bloods, Annabeth has ADHD, which is supposed to make half-bloods more aware in battles, and like most other half-bloods she has dyslexia, due to the fact that she is 'hard-wired' from birth to read Ancient Greek and because of her instincts of fighting and being a daughter of Athena.
  • Annabeth is very knowledgeable in architecture, history and Greek myths, which is very useful in her journey and battles.
  • Annabeth is also a master strategist.
  • Annabeth is trained in hand to hand combat during her stays at Camp Half-Blood.
  • Annabeth can read english well, even though like other half-bloods she is dyslexic.
  • Annabeth is extremely intelligent, wise, and clever.
  • Due to fact that she is a daughter of Athena, Annabeth is obviously good at arts and crafts.

Fatal Flaw

  • Hubris- or deadly pride. Annabeth believes that she's able to do anything: get her parents back together, build great monuments, save Luke, and even (as seen in The Titan's Curse) hold up the sky.

Weapons/Magical Items

  • A magical Yankees cap that turns her invisible.
  • A celestial-bronze knife that she uses as a weapon.
  • A laptop with ideas and information from Daedalus.
