Barnstaple Town was an intermediate station on the L&SWR line to Ilfracombe, and between 1898 and 1935, also the South-western Terminus of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, a famously scenic narrow gauge line that ran through Exmoor from Barnstaple to Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon, a distance by rail of almost 20 miles.
The mainline closed, along with the station, in 1970.
A volunteer group, the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Co., are rebuilding the railway, from their main operating centre at Woody Bay, where passenger services restarted in 2004.
