Super Punch-Out!! is a boxing video game for the Super NES. It is the latest game in the series, taking place after Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! The protagonist is a nameless boxer working his way up the World Video Boxing Association (WVBA) circuits. The protagonist faces a series of fictional boxers, culminating in a fight with the undefeated Nick Bruiser.
Super Punch-Out!! was scored by Takashi Kumegawa and Masaru Sakakibara.
Gameplay
Good timing and pattern recognition skills are necessary to react to the attacks of each opponent. As the player proceeds through the game's circuits, the opponents become more difficult to react to and defeat.
The opponents
The opponents the player has to face in the three boxing circuits are:
Minor Circuit
- Gabby Jay is the weakest boxer in the game. Gabby Jay's only win has been against his trainer, Glass Joe. His primary attack is his Taunt Punch, in which he hops away to shout "C'mon!" before hopping back to punch.
- Bear Hugger is immune to body blows except at a critical moment. He is a returning character, having previously appeared in Super Punch-Out!! for the arcade.
- Piston Hurricane, another character returning from the arcade version of Punch Out!!, utilizes the Hurricane Rush, a fast series of jabs.
- Bald Bull is the Minor Circuit champion who utilizes an attack called the Bull Charge. He previously appeared in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
Major Circuit
- Bob Charlie is a Jamaican boxer with a powerful whirling punch and dodges often. His name is a play on reggae singer Bob Marley.
- Dragon Chan, returning from the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!!, utilizes kung-fu. He can also regain strength through meditation. His coach also refuses to speak anything in English. Modeled after Bruce Lee.
- Masked Muscle is a luchador. He cheats by spitting in the protagonist's eyes to blind him for a short time. He also headbutts his opponent.
- Mr. Sandman, a Philadelphia native, attacks with the Midnight Sleeper. Mr. Sandman also appeared in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!.
World Circuit
- Aran Ryan, an Irish boxer who is able to counter all but the most powerful punches and is able to grab the protagonist to gain back some of his health.
- Heike Kagero, a kabuki and standard bishonen, swings his long hair as a weapon.
- Mad Clown is an Italian clown who uses juggling balls as weapons. He is immune to body blows.
- Super Macho Man incorporates his exercise routines into his powerful attacks, such as his trademark Super Spin Punch. He also appears in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! and the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!!.
Special Circuit
- Narcis Prince, a vain Englishman, goes berserk when you hit his vulnerable face.
- Hoy Quarlow is an elderly man who attacks with a cane. He also utilizes kung-fu.
- Rick Bruiser, the younger Bruiser brother, whose only loss came at the hands of his older brother.
- Nick Bruiser, the elder Bruiser brother and the most difficult opponent in the game. He has never lost a match.
Trivia
- According to the instruction manual, Gabby Jay was trained by Glass Joe, the first opponent of both Punch-Out!! and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!.
- Charles Martinet (the voice of Mario) was credited for providing voiceover acting of the boxers and the announcer of Super Punch-Out!!. [citation needed]
- The Nintendo GameCube version of Electronic Arts' Fight Night: Round 2 includes Super Punch-Out!!. If the player finishes Super Punch-Out!!, the game's protagonist becomes available for play in Fight Night: Round 2. He is named "Little Mac", but that is actually the name of the protagonist of the original Punch-Out!!
- Only Gabby Jay, Bear Hugger, Piston Hurricane, Bob Charlie, Dragon Chan, Masked Muscle, Aran Ryan, Super Macho Man, Narcis Prince, and Nick Bruiser can be KO'ed. All the others will invariably have to be TKO'ed to be defeated.
- Narcis Prince and Hoy Quarlow are the only opponent boxers in the game with unique sprites. As for the others, one boxer is basically a palette swap of one other boxer. However, their sprites have been altered so that they look different (ex: skin color, facial features, attire, etc.) The pairs of boxers that are palette swapped are Gabby Jay/Bob Charlie, Bear Hugger/Mad Clown, Piston Hurricane/Aran Ryan (except for his "fainted sprite", which matches Gabby Jay's and Bob Charlie's), Bald Bull/Mr. Sandman, Dragon Chan/Heike Kagero, Masked Muscle/Super Macho Man, and Rick Bruiser/Nick Bruiser (the easiest to spot, considering that they are twin brothers). This can also be seen in the previous Punch-Out!! titles.
