This article describes the different psychopaths that Frank West encounters during the course of the video game Dead Rising. Psychopaths are the humans inside the Willamette Parkview Mall that serve as boss battles that are for the most part optional. For most of them, their motives may include temporary fits of madness brought on by the incident, but others were corrupt before the outbreak and are using the confusion to mask their own evil desires. Carlito Keyes

File:Dead-rising-e3-2006-pic19.jpg
Carlito

Name: Carlito Keyes

Age: 33

Bio: He is responsible for the zombie outbreak and is a recurring boss the player must battle. He invited Dr. Barnaby to the mall to "show" what the Doctor missed at Santa Cabeza (Carlito’s home village). Carlito’s motivation for the zombie outbreak in Willamette is one entirely fueled by a thirst for vengeance for the Santa Cabeza incident. It is also ultimately revealed that his concern for his sister and her suffering was a much stronger source of motivation than that of his own anger.

Nevertheless, his actions and motives are seen as insane and psychotic by many, even his own sister. When fought for the third time, he will even exclaim "This is like a movie!" as he attacks Frank.

Overtime Bio: While Carlito may have died in the 72 hour story, in Overtime his terror still carries on. When Isabela his sister was able to gain access to his laptop, they discover that he has created 50 children "Zombie Bombs", which he has infected with the virus. The children were orphans and were adopted by families all around the United States of America, making Frank and Isabela's escape more vital to stop the Willamette incident happening all over again. It is believed by many that this adoption service is how he was able to fund his equipments and weapons.

Location/Time of appearance:

  • First Appearance: In the Food Court on the 19th at 12:30pm
  • Second Appearance: In the Entrance Plaza on the 20th at 6am
  • Third Appearance: In the Maintenance Tunnel on the 21st at 11am

Demise: After Brad’s shoot out with Carlito in the maintenance tunnel, Carlito was severely injured. He was captured by Larry Chaing, a deranged butcher who brings him back his shop for processing. Frank intervenes and stops Carlito from becoming mince meat. In Carlito's dying moments, Frank pushes him to tell the story, promising that the Santa Cabeza story would be told. Instead, Carlito delivers a speech asking why Dr. Barnaby's research was more important to the Americans than human life. He then gives Frank his necklace and tells Frank to give it to Isabela and to take care of her. He dies, denying Frank his exclusive interview with the man responsible for the Willamette Zombie Outbreak. He also hints to Frank that something more sinister is just over the horizon, something Frank cannot stop.

Cletus appears from the beginning of the game but will vanish around the end of day 2 and is then said to be lost, and is replaced with 3 survivors who take refuge in the shop who order you to show them a picture of the shaft leading to the security room or they will fire on you with guns.

He then sets the ride to run at dangerously high speeds, which he believes will scare the zombies away. When Frank is going to stop the Space Rider, Adam believes that Frank is going to spoil the children’s fun, who are already on the ride (they are represented by two blood-covered dolls instead), and that if he stops the ride, the zombies will come back and "ruin the fun" (i.e come after him) once more. Frank slowly approaches Steven, who suddenly sits up and screams "Clean up... register 6!" and then falls back dead.

Cliff Hudson

File:Cliff machete.jpg

He hangs beheaded zombies in Crislip’s Home Saloon, and locks humans into an unused store space for interrogation and torture. The reason for this is that Cliff believes most survivors to be Viet Cong guerrilla fighters, including Frank. Frank intervenes just as she is about to attack Kay Nelson, who is tied to a chair. Isabela Keyes

File:Isabella Keyes.jpg
Isabela Keyes

Name: Isabela Keyes

Age: 27

Bio: She is Carlito's younger sister, and formerly one of the scientists working under Dr. Barnaby. She is first seen at the beginning of the game in the Entrance Plaza but mysteriously vanishes. Later she was captured by Steven when she went to retrieve medicine for Carlito's injury. She appears as a psychopath and battles with Frank. She is defeated and Isabela promises Frank he will get an interview with Carlito, who later shoots her out of anger. After saving Isabela, she joins Frank's side, to fight against her brother.

Overtime Info: By the final hours of the game, if Frank does not stop to see Isabela at 10am on the last day, when the cut scene showing Brock and his special forces leave the mall, Isabela stays at Carlito’s hideout. But if you do see her at 10am, she will inform you to "save yourself." When Frank sees the helicopter crash while waiting at the heliport, he falls to his knees in despair as zombies approach him. Isabela appears and shoots down zombies surrounding Frank as he collapses. She carries Frank back to the hideout and informs him that he collapsed because he is infected. While Isabela was working at Dr. Barnaby's plant at Santa Cabeza, she discovered a suppressant (not a cure) for the zombie virus. It will keep him from becoming a zombie, but only for an unknown length of time. However, she needs supplies from around the mall. After Frank returns to Isabella with the supplies, they realize that Willamette was just the beginning of Carlito's vengeance-he has infected fifty orphans and given them the suppressant before sending them to orphanages throughout the US-and like Frank, they could turn at any time. They agree that getting the truth to the world is no longer a matter of justice, but of survival for the entire human race. At Isabela's request, Frank searches the mall once more, this time for an electrical generator. During the search, Frank notices that the helicopter crash has smashed a hole in the clock tower, opening up a zombie-infested tunnel. After returning to Isabella with this information, she makes a "zombie repellent" pheromone from the leftover treatment supplies. She hopes it will allow them to leave the Willamette Mall through this tunnel. The zombie infested tunnel leads to sewage waterway, and then to an Army encampment, where they steal a Humvee. As they race away, Brock intercepts them in an automated tank. After the tank's sensors are destroyed, Brock switches to manual control, topples the humvee by ramming it, and is preparing to kill them both when the zombies from the tunnel approach, surrounding both vehicles. Although unarmed, Frank takes this opportunity to attack Brock.

Location/Time of appearance: In the North Plaza outside Seon’s Food and Stuff Supermarket on the 20th at 5pm

Abilities:

Theme music: Music is done by Hideki Okugawa and Marika Suzuki.

Voice actor: Kim Mai Guest

Demise: After Brock is thrown into the zombie horde to his death, Isabela is last seen fighting off zombies from the top of the jeep. It is believed by many that Isabela did indeed escape to expose the story with Frank as the Survivor Notebook at the end of the game lists her as Safe as well as being able to achieve the "Life Saver" Achievement.

Due to Frank's interference the "Raincoat cult" members now appear all around the mall, searching for him. Upon receiving Otis' call about a strange group, Frank enters Colby’s Movieland and heads to Cinema 4, where Sean is seen praying. He begins preaching his faith, stating that those who follow him will ultimately be saved from the "end of the world", and that he will slay all "non-believers" who stand in his path, suddenly turns around to face Frank, saying that he will kill him, then attacks.

True Eye Cultists

File:928326 20060710 screen003.jpg
Cultists on the attack

Name: True Eye Cultists

Ages: Unknown

Bio: The True Eye Cultists are a congregation of survivors from the city of Willamette, who have been brainwashed by and to follow Sean Keanan. Sean tells them that this is the end of the world (Judgment Day in the bible), and that those who do not follow Sean's teaching have been infected and should be purged. As a group they decide to head to the most likely place for followers and non-believers to go, the Mall.

Prior to Frank West's appearance, they have captured a number of survivors, one Cheryl Jones, who Frank had seen on Kent's camera. When Frank saw a mass in progress at Paradise Plaza. He went to investigate and after seeing what was happening, he started to take pictures. Sean saw this and branded Frank a heretic against the path of salvation. As a consequence of Frank's intervention, Sean orders The Cultists to appear all around the mall in groups ranging from 10 to 20 people per group to spill Frank's blood and for him to be purged.

It is unknown if they picked up the Yellow Raincoat and Green mask attire upon entering the mall or before. It is also unknown if the members are all male or a mixture of genders, due to the shape of their appearance. The Cultists are seen chanting with the hordes of zombies (they share the same chant as the Los Illuminados from Resident Evil 4), untouched by them. If Frank is knocked out by their sleeping gas or is critically injured by them, he is taken in a box to a building, outside in Leisure Park, adjacent to Movieland's position. In this room Frank has to fight his way out using his bare fists and a number of items in the room as weapons. The Cultists are suicidal and will frequently jump on Frank while detonating dynamite strapped to themselves.

Paul Carson

File:PaulC.jpg
Paul Carson

Name: Paul Carson

Age: 19

Bio: Paul is a long-haired outcast teenager who believes that everyone is laughing at him. When Frank first meets Paul, he is threatening survivors Mindy Baker and Debbie Willett with a Molotov cocktail in his hand, taunting them for laughing at him (in reality they did not; Paul is merely acting on his fears). Paul is startled by Frank, and accuses Frank of trying to laugh at him too, then turns back and forth between Frank and the trapped survivors, unsure of who to throw the cocktail at first.

Location/Time of appearance: In the Wonderland Plaza at Casual Gals on the 21st at 5am

Abilities:

Theme music: Music is done by Hideki Okugawa and Marika Suzuki.

Voice actor: Gabriel Olds

Demise: After a battle with Frank, Paul lights up another Molotov Cocktail, but unfortunately for Paul, he slips on the gasoline can Frank had knocked over earlier, causing him to fall backwards and drop his cocktail, where it quickly shatters and lights his crotch. Frank is given the option to leave Paul to die, or save him with a nearby fire extinguisher. Should Frank choose to save him, Paul quickly comes to grips with reality, thanking Frank and joining him as a survivor. Paul and Isabela are the only two Psychopaths that are willing to convert and help Frank. Paul also helps you further in the game (if you save him) by giving you a Molotov Cocktail every time you talk to him.

Kent Swanson

File:928326 20060629 screen054.jpg
Kent Swanson

Name: Kent Swanson

Age: 24

Bio: Like Frank, Kent is a photographer. Kent believes that is he the best photographer. The first time Frank meets him, Kent challenges Frank to a photograph taking contest (by first showing Frank his most moving picture, entrance plaza survivor Verlene Willis comforting and hugging fellow survivor Dana Simms; his "sexiest" shot, one of Cheryl Jones; and his most violent shot, quite literally a close-up "shot" of a Zombie shot in the head). Frank wins, and Kent tells him to meet him with an Erotic picture above 500pp. Frank meets with Kent on the second day. Kent, in disbelief and jealousy, discredits Frank's triumph and tells Frank to meet him on the final day. Frank meets Kent, and one of the two following scenarios ensues. Either:

  • Frank arrives on time at 12:00 and he meets Kent who has captured Tad. By this point, Kent plotted that the only way to outdo Frank's skills was to capture the only image Frank won’t or couldn't, a human turning into a zombie. Kent throws a larva at Tad, which will change him into a zombie, but fortunately for Tad, Frank intervenes, crushing the larva under his foot. Kent is once again in disbelief at Frank's actions, unable to understand why he would ruin such a perfect shot. As a result, he sees this as an act of betrayal, and turns his gun on Frank.
  • Frank arrives after noon has passed and Kent proudly displays his photos of Tad as he metamorphoses into a zombie. As Frank looks at the pictures, Kent lifts his gun to Frank's head as the screen fades. Frank finds himself, stripped of his clothes and weapons, tied by a chain to the light rig over the water piece in Paradise Plaza where Frank has to fight a harder battle against Kent, naked without his guns or weapons.

Larry Chiang

File:Larrychaing.jpg
Larry Chiang

Name: Larry Chiang

Age: 40

Bio: Larry is a burly butcher who prides himself on his work. In a fit of madness resulting from the zombie outbreak, he has gone to hunt people for 'processing' (one can even see Sid Carmack's corpse hanging from a meat hook). He will only carve 'fresh meat' (humans) and not 'spoiled meat' (zombies) as he believes that his reputation as a butcher is on the line. The first appearance of Larry is seen on a monitor, dragging an injured Carlito to the meat processing room. Upon Frank's arrival, Frank tries to trick Larry into handing over Carlito by saying that he wants "that meat". Larry takes this the wrong way and thinks Frank wants ground meat, which he then attempts to make out of Carlito. Frank then ambushes the waiting Larry to save Carlito.

Brock Mason

File:BrockMason.jpg
Brock Mason

Name: Brock Mason

Age: Unknown; possible in his late 40's or early 50's

Bio: Though thoroughly amoral, Brock is not a psychopath per se, as he is fully in command of his faculties. His inhumane acts are merely orders he follows. However, he is the game's final boss.

He is the leader of the Special Forces Unit that was sent into the mall for the "cleanup" operation. He also led the previous cleanup operation at Santa Cabeza, and knows a lot about the nature of the zombie outbreak. He first appears at midnight on the last day, leading his unit to start the operation. He leaves after the majority of the zombies have been eliminated, his mission complete. When Isabela and Frank steal a military jeep with a mounted machine gun on the back to escape, they are intercepted by Brock, who is piloting an automated tank. After the duo manages to cripple the tank, Brock transfers from automated to manual controls and rams the Humvee, flipping it over. Frank wakes up to see Brock on the tank, aiming its cannon at him. After a conversation between the two in which he nihilistically defends his actions, Brock prepares to fire when the automatic targeting system diverts the turret's (and Brock's) attention to the oncoming horde of zombies from the other direction. With Brock's back turned, Frank sees his opportunity and jumps aboard. Brock loses his cigar to Frank's initial attack, and both men, unarmed, begin the game's final battle.

The Special Forces also use scout bots, which shoots bullets to slow down living individuals in the mall, they can also alert nearby Special Forces if a person gets too close, by sounding an alarm. These bots can easily be shot down with one shot.

If Frank has been injured enough, they will capture him, strip him, and lock him in the UH-60 Blackhawk , which has now landed in the car park and is patrolled by two guards, where Frank has to work his way out of the handcuffs binding him.
