Self-unreferencing articles

There are people all over wikipedia who do nothing but add unreferenced tags to articles, some less than a minute old. Why not just write the articles, take a minute or two to add the botanical authorities, and leave the unreferenced taggint to others with fewer skills and less knowledge of plants? If you need assistance adding references, forgo the tag and just link the articles on my talk page, and I'll put the authorities or some other reference in for you. Since you're obviously capable of writing articles, leaving the tagging mania up to those who can't, would, in my opinion, be of benefit to Wikipedia. --Blechnic (talk) 03:16, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You closed the AfD for radio talk show host James Reith, which was a reasonable close given the unanimous discussion. However, I noticed that no one in that discussion bothered to look for any sources. Had they done so, they might have found several news articles about the talk show host, more commonly known as Jim Reith, in The Post-Standard and the Syracuse Herald-Journal. Would you being willing to restore this article (and the Jim Reith redirect) given this evidence of notability? DHowell (talk) 08:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well... it's not much to bring back to light... would you be strongly opposed to starting the article over? Punkmorten (talk) 19:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer not to, if there's any usable material in the deleted article I'd like to use it... would you be willing to at least userfy it, if you're not willing to restore it to mainspace? DHowell (talk) 20:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 06:53, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have no strong feelings about this, except that four pictures in a row sure looks terrible. Punkmorten (talk) 09:46, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well yes. For most places there wouldn't be four. There would be two like Langesund ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:16, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I don't know I just really wish I had the talent and capabilities of administrators on here, I really find it disabling not having the abilities that admins with 4000 edits have who have barely edited the mainspace encyclopedia. I guess I'll never have the talent to be an admin. Such a pity I'll never have a badge to rule over others that people will "look up to me with" and spend all my time in council and wiki lawyering discussions rather than editing what is important. Hi Punkmorten I was wondering if you thought it might be time that the main athletics categories were split by nationality too. E.g Category:Sprinters into e.g Category:French sprinters, Category:Spanish sprinters etc etc. Just a thought.. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:30, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is getting big, yes.. I don't know. Punkmorten (talk) 14:32, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there is a technical problem with the current category sizes, American films for instance has around 11,000 articles in it. Splitting by country would probably depend on how many athletes we have in the relative fields of athletics. I notice there is already Category:Canadian sprinters etc. I wonder what WP:Athletics would think.... ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:50, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Putting footaball players up for speedy-deletion

What constitutes a fully-professional league for someone to have played in to be allowed into wikipedia?

The reason why I ask this is because there are countries in the world eg Scotland where there are professional clubs who have players who operate on a part-time basis. The only nation in Europe that I am aware of which has more than two (or three) full-time professional divisions is England. - Dreamweaverjack (talk) 23:29, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are some criteria at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Notability. Lower Scottish divisions are probably not notable, neither are most second-tier clubs in most countries. Who was speedied? Punkmorten (talk) 15:25, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to date of birth & death to match MOS

Hi, I've come across a number of articles which you have created/made major contributions to in the Norwegian politician category. I intend to make a minor change to most of these articles to better comply with the Manual of Style: specifically, for a person with known dates of birth and death, no 'born' and 'died' is required, and their place of birth/death should be given outside of the date range (see Wikipedia:DATE#Dates_of_birth_and_death). I've made one sample change at [1] to fix the date range, and add the place of birth as a separate sentence. Before I use AWB to change more (not as a bot, but using AWB will be faster and more reliable) do you have any input to the way the place of birth/death should be reported in the article? Thanks Rjwilmsi 22:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it looks awful outside of the birth and death parenthesis, but if it must be removed then it does not belong in the first paragraph. Matters are complicated, though, by the fact that it must be integrated into the text in a sensible manner, not placed randomly somewhere. Good luck. Punkmorten (talk) 08:42, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll take the approach you used in the Thorbjørn Lie article to put the place of birth/death as the second line, unless the article has information about where the person lived, when I'll integrate it into that line. Rjwilmsi 12:33, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Punkmorten (talk) 21:20, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Removal

Hi, can you elaborate a little? Which article in particular does this relate to? Or do you mean the rationale in general as spread across multiple articles? If the latter, then I'm not sure I see a problem. It can be said that "[Actor X] is signed to star in Zombie Massacre, scheduled for filming in 2009..." without the need for it to be linked. Removing the link merely discourages its recreation until such time as it becomes notable. All the best, Steve TC 13:26, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see it now, thanks. This is an occasion where a future film has shared a title with an old Amiga game. I should have been more vigilant in my link removals. The video game should indeed stay linked within that article. I'll make sure I look more closely in the future. Thanks again, Steve TC 13:33, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking forward to the Olympics? I wonder what an impact the pollution will have on the distance runners. ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 10:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am looking forward, but think of the workload! :) I follow not only athletics, but many of the team sports, water sports, fighting sports and more. Don't care for baseball, tennis, sailing or equestrianism. I was in Beijing two years ago and although the city was indeed heavily polluted, the runners seemed to produce good results (some race walkers collapsed due to the heat). But it's different now, since in the Olympics there are road events, plus the new stadium is located closer to the city centre. Punkmorten (talk) 12:31, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes 10,000 athletes to keep track of is huge. Not to mention all the different stages of events that will be covered on here. Never been to China, only Hong Kong, but China is developing at a frightening rate. Britains best medal hopes I think are in boxing and rowing. I was watching Michael Johnson speaking earlier and he reckons the US olympic team is a lot weaker than it has been in decades and that China stand a strong chance of winning the highest number of medals. I always like watching the athletics, swimming/diving and the power lifting the most - equestrianism does my head in too. ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 17:59, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Very few people seem interested in the canoeing unfortunately. I had to start most of the competitors in the mens slalom canoeing because they were missing for 2008. They are still olympic medalists though!! The canoeing is quite fun to watch, the worst events have to be the equestrian, the clay pigeon shooting and sailing ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 22:01, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you don't want to create canoe bios (my interpretation of the words "had to start"), you could always leave that to me. I have created plenty recently Punkmorten (talk) 22:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no thats not what I meant. I don't mind creating them at all. When I said "had to start" I didn't mean grudgingly, rather a surprise that some top athletes in their field were missing from wikipedia thats all! ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 11:04, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Could you help start many of the red linked weightlifters at the olympics. I watched the 77 kg mens yesterday and we only have like 3 or 4 of them on here, cheers ♦ Dr. Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 14:18, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can look into it. Punkmorten (talk) 14:20, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to get some done tonight. I can see you have a huge amount to do already with athletics The Bald One White cat 18:01, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Luis Miguel del Risco

I have removed the {{proposed deletion/dated}} tag from Luis Miguel del Risco, which you proposed for deletion. I'm leaving this message here to notify you about it. Instead, I have started a deletion discussion at [[The article states that me has made three appearances for Milonarios, which would appear to satisfy WP:FOOTYN]], which you may comment on. I have explained my reasons for doing so there. Thanks! Cynical (talk) 16:35, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rodkleiva

Hi there :) Figure you know everything on sports, so I'd ask you—a new user added Rodkleiva to {{Ski flying hills}}. Can't say I have heard about this, so is this really a certain plan, or just speculations? Happy Olympics. Arsenikk (talk) 19:46, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe. It should be Rødkleiva - [2]. The creator should've known what he was writing about... Punkmorten (talk) 14:53, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Athletes

Hello old friend. :) Thank you for proposed help, much appreciated! I'll just finish women's 10,000 m and go sleep. I am sad to observe there are only a few users active in categorisation of Olympic sportspeople. Every day I add categories to min. 100 articles of various sports, because users don't feel the need to update them. I noticed now tennis players are without "Tennis players at the 2008 Summer Olympics" or "Olympic tennis players of XY" categories. Oh gosh, more work for me next days. :( Help with hundreds of athletes articles will be like salvation. :) - Darwinek (talk) 21:59, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are right but don't worry about the results pages. In most cases results are here quickly. I bet athletics is so popular it will be even quickier. Just several today's disciplines like weightlifting still lack final results but I believe others will fix it tomorrow. Problems you identified are true, another one are disambigs. There are many athletes with ordinary names like e.g. Mike Brown and fresh editors don't bother to disambiguate them. This situation creates many false blue links in results pages when proper article doesn't even exists. - Darwinek (talk) 22:10, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bolt

9.69 is ridiculously quick isn't it. Did you see him at the 8 second mark? He took his foot off the gas and practically danced across the line in celebration and still ran under 9.7. I remember when 9.85 was the record for a long time. I wonder if anyone will ever go under 9.50 secs The Bald One White cat 15:58, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He didn't even try after the 80 metre line. Awesome. However Olaf Tufte was more awesome :) Punkmorten (talk) 16:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm loving these olympics. I've never seen so many world records broken. Most of the swimming records are being shattered. The Bald One White cat 16:56, 16 August 2008 (UTC) I've added the tables for the first round at Athletics at the 2008 Summer Olympics - Women's 400 metre hurdles. Is this OK? The Bald One White cat 14:57, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, if referenced. Punkmorten (talk) 16:47, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure 1.88m is the correct height for Asbel Kiprop? I watched the 1500m final earlier and the guy is huge - very lanky -he stood out form a distance. I'd say he was more like 1.96m. Perhaps he has grown? P.S good to see Bolt joggin the final 100m of his 200m heats. Lets hope he tries his fastest in the final. The Bald One White cat 17:23, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tag

You've obviously been here long enough that you should know better than to remove a notability tag using the revert button without making any comment at all. So, if you can, please edit the article to reflect why this 18th century clergyman is notable. Exploding Boy (talk) 22:51, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since you introduced a spelling error to the article, and the tag was unjustified, I reverted. The article already asserts notability, it says that he was bishop for 27 years. If you disagree, please take it straight to AFD instead of wasting time. Punkmorten (talk) 22:53, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I didn't edit the article at all. I've looked at the revision history, and that spelling change wasn't mine. At any rate, does the mere fact of being a bishop make a person notable? I'm not "wasting time," as you put it, I'm simply following the standard procedure. Exploding Boy (talk) 22:55, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you did edit the article. And tagging minute-old articles by established users is questionable. As for sources, the article already includes many and one can't excpect that many sources to be available online. The article would be kept at AFD, I don't really bother nominating it myself, but since lack of notability is a reason for deletion, perhaps you'd like to try or will you have a hard time justifying the deletion of the article? Punkmorten (talk) 23:16, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As I explained, I know it appears that way, but I didn't edit the article except to add the tag. Additionally, I didn't initially realize you were an established user because your article was not auto-patrolled; it appeared highlighted in yellow on the new articles list, which is why I checked it in the first place.
I must say, I find your behaviour a little tendentious, particularly for an admin. I tagged the article per the guidelines at WP:NOTE, which you may wish to review. I see nothing in your most recent edit (in which you once again removed the tag) that demonstrates the subject's notability. Being related to a Prime Minister doesn't confer notability, and I'm not convinced that the mere fact of being a bishop does either. Since the conversation between us is clearly going nowhere, I will nominate the article for deletion, so that a decision can be made as to this person's notability. Exploding Boy (talk) 23:25, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your information, and if you'd like to be involved in the discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peder Christian Hersleb Kjerschow. Thanks. Exploding Boy (talk) 23:31, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In case you miss it due to multiple edits, I have added the following to the AFD page:
"I certainly don't suggest that his relationship with a famous person should be counted against him, but I wish you had (a) said all this before, and (b) added it to the article when you were first asked about notability. That would have solved the issue at the tag stage without the need to bring it here. Based on the above I will withdraw my nomination for deletion at this time, with a request for Punkmorten to add the relevant information to the article. "

Yes, certainly. There was a period where someone would slap speedy tags on my articles ever so often. Needless to say, they never succeeded. Some even said sorry. See also my user page for articles that survived AFD. As for this particular article, I did not even write any of it! Punkmorten (talk) 19:49, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wonder why did you revert their albanian names. Mirela Manjani is the current record-holder of Albania in javellin and both of them have dual citizienship, albanian and greek. According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies), they should have Albanian names too. Thanks.balkanian (talk) 15:11, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mirela Manjani's Albanian name is Mirela Manjani. We don't put up the same name twice - out of the question. Savva Lika's Albanian name was moved to the text body. Punkmorten (talk) 15:14, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for your message and yes I understand what you are saying, so I hope I won't forget it in the future and I see what I can do to add it to the ones where I didn't add that link so far. Per Inge Torkelsen

Hi Punkmorten,

I translated one of the articles that you requested, Per Inge Torkelsen, and was wondering if you would proofread it? There are a couple things that I wasn't really sure about, most notably a good translation for "Gi ungdommen en flaske brennevin før idretten tar dem" that English speakers would understand. Hey, that's great Morten. I've just been going through Norsk Krigsleksikon the last few days and added refs to Wikipedia articles where there were none. Really nice work on expanding that article.
