Lyondell Chemical Company is an American multinational corporation based in Houston, Texas. Lyondell was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange in December, 2007 (formerly NYSELYO). It is an indirect subsidiary of LyondellBasell Industries AF.

Overview

The Lyondell Chemical Company is,(as of 2008), the third largest independent chemical manufacturer in the United States. Since its establishment in 1985 from certain facilities belonging to the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the company has grown through various acquisitions and is currently a Fortune 500 company that operates in five continents and employs over 11,000 people. Lyondell is the global leader in propylene oxide production and is the largest North American supplier of styrene monomer. Other Lyondell products include ethylene, polyethylene, and titanium dioxide

Lyondell acquired Millennium Chemicals, Inc. in a stock-for-stock business combination on November 30, 2004. In August, 2006, Lyondell acquired the Lyondell-Citgo Refining LP in a transaction valued at around $2.1 billion, and has renamed the facility Houston Refining.

Chemical maker Basell Polyolefins said on Tuesday, 17 July 2007, it would buy Lyondell Chemical Co. for about $12.14 billion. Basell Polyolefins is owned by Access Industries, a privately held, U.S.-based industrial group. The deal closed on Thursday, 20 December 2007, creating the new company LyondellBasell Industries AF S.C.A.
