Midori-ku (緑区) is one of the 18 wards of the city of Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The character for this ward means green. The ward covers an area of 25.42 km² with a population of 171,562 (mid-2006 estimate).

Geography

Midori-ku is located in the northwest part of the city. Except for the northeast portion, much of the area is hilly and relatively sparsely populated compared to other parts of the city. The flatter northeast portion is located on the Tsurumi River basin, with the river serving as a ward boundary with Tsuzuki-ku. Most of the population of the ward is concentrated along the routes of the JR Yokohama Line and Yokohama Ring Road 4. Along the Ondagawa River, a tributary of the Tsurumi River, a relatively large area of farmland can be found, rare for such a highly urbanized city as Yokohama.

Transportation

Rail

Nagatsuta Station is a major station where the Yokohama Line (to downtown Yokohama) and Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line (to Shibuya) meet. Several stations of the Yokohama Line are also located in the ward: Tōkaichiba Station, Nakayama Station and Kamoi Station. Nakayama Station is also connected by the Green Line of Yokohama Municipal Subway.

Roads

The Tomei Expressway and Route 246 both cut across the northwest portion of the ward. One interchange on the Tomei Expressway for Route 16 is located in the extreme west of the ward. Ring Road 4 also runs through the area, as well as several secondary prefectural routes.

Education

Several universities are located in the ward, most notably the Nagatsuta campus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Other universities include Showa University and Toyo Eiwa University.
