Alice Hoogstad (born 13 October 1957) is a Dutch illustrator and writer of children's literature.

Biography

When Hoogstad was young she drew with chalk on sidewalks and walls. So much so that the cleaners at her school started complaining and she had to clean it all herself.[1] She studied graphics and painting at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten, now the Willem de Kooning Academy, in Rotterdam. She lives and works at Bergen in North Holland. [2] She started illustrating children’s books in 1987 and as of 2023 has illustrated over 200 books,[3][2] including those of (among others) Guus Kuijer, Sjoerd Kuyper and Tjibbe Veldkamp. She wrote and illustrated her own first book in 2005 entitled "Monsterboek" ("Monsters").[2] With this book she won the Dutch annual prizes for the children's book with the best illustrations, the Zilveren Penseel [nl][4] and the Gouden Griffel.[5][6]

For the 2022 book "De nachtlantaarns van meneer Makkelie" she made fourteen illustrations. Thirteen well-known children's book writers, including Paul van Loon, Sjoerd Kuyper, Dolf Verroen, Bette Westera, Annet Schaap and Jan Paul Schutten, wrote stories about these illustrations.[7][8] An exposition about her works is being held at the Museum Kranenburgh [nl] from 1 October 2023 to 10 March 2024.[2][3]

Hoogstad is married and has a daughter.[9]
