History
History
Settlement
In 1812, the first group of Selkirk Settlers established a burying ground immediately south of the present cathedral. It is the oldest Canadian Anglican parish west of the Great Lakes, which was established in October 1820 when the Rev. John West, the first Anglican priest in Western Canada, arrived from England under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society and the Hudson's Bay Company in the Red River Settlement to serve as chaplain to the Hudson's Bay officers and men, missionary to the aboriginal people in the area, and pastor to the Selkirk Settlers. The majority of the Selkirk Settlers were Presbyterians, but they attended Anglican services until the first Presbyterian minister arrived in 1851.
Kuantan is said to have been founded in the 1850s. The word "Kuantan" was mentioned by Abdullah Abdul Kadir (Munshi Abdullah) circa 1851/2 as below:

The Four Churches
"On Thursday night came a boat from KUANTAN. Then they told the ship's crew there's a pirate ship at
Tanjung Tujuh, forty of them and at Pulau Kapas, and as well at Pulau Redang; it was spotted by two Kuantan boats and they set off...."

There have been four churches on the site. The first was a Church Mission House constructed in 1822 by the Rev. John West near the south-east corner of the present cemetery; however, it was washed away in the great flood of 1826. In 1833 it was replaced by a second church, a stone building built on the site of the present Cathedral. This second church became the first Anglican Cathedral in Western Canada soon after the first Bishop of Rupert's Land, the Rt. Rev. David Anderson, was consecrated in 1849. The building was severely weakened by the flood of 1850, and thus a third building, also of stone, was erected on the same site from 1862 to 1863. The fourth and present Cathedral was reconstructed in 1926 using most of the stone from the previous building under the guidance and inspiration of Archbishop Samuel P. Matheson. It was regarded by him as a tribute and memorial of his predecessor, Archbishop Robert Machray. Archbishop Machray, who succeeded Bishop David Anderson in 1865, is regarded by many local Anglicans as having given unsparingly of his time and talents to St. John's and the Diocese of Rupert's Land for almost forty years. In 1893 he became the first Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.
In its early days, it was known as Kampung Teruntum (Teruntum Village). The village was situated at the mouth of Teruntum River which is in front of the current hospital and it was established by Haji Senik and his followers in the 1850s. Early primary economic activities included fishing and small businesses. The main evidence of the establishment of the village is the cemetery that is situated near Taman Esplanade in front of the current Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan.

The Cemetery
Towards the late 19th century, arrival of Chinese miners and traders saw the establishment of a township in Kuantan and also nearby tin mining areas such as Gambang and Sungai Lembing. Similar to what occurred in other states in Peninsular Malaysia, rubber plantations attracted Indian settlers as well.

The cemetery, which surrounds the cathedral, is considered by locals as the history of Winnipeg in stone. It was established by the Selkirk Settlers after their arrival in the Red River Settlement in 1812, so it pre-dates the parish by eight years. The oldest marked grave (1832) is that of eight-month-old George Simpson, son of George and Frances Simpson, the Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company and his wife. The earliest graves were destroyed in the flood of 1826.
Economic Activities
Provincial Heritage Site
Known as a tropical getaway, one of its major economic activities is tourism. Domestically, it is famous for the production of handicrafts, batik, keropok (dried fish crackers) and salted fish. Kuantan serves as the administrative and commercial capital of Pahang. Trade and commerce are also important in the economy of the town.

In September, 2004, St. John's Cathedral was designated as a Heritage Site by the Hon. Eric Robinson, Manitoba Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism. The historical designation covers both the cathedral and the surrounding cemetery.
The timber industry and the fishing industry also play vital roles in the local economy.

Design and Architecture
Other than tourism and business, Kuantan also witnesses the strong presence of petrochemical industries, mostly located in Gebeng, an industrial area about 25 km north of Kuantan. Among the major companies operating at Gebeng Industrial Area are BASF PETRONAS Chemicals, BP Chemicals, MTBE,Flexsys, Eastman Chemical, Kaneka, Polyplastics, Mieco, KNM, JiKang, [[W.R. ===Architecture===

The present cathedral was designed by architects Parfitt and Prain, the cathedral is Norman-Gothic in style. The chancel was extended by eight feet in 2005 to allow for use of a chancel altar. All the furnishings in the chancel, with the exception of the organ console, can be removed, providing space for concerts, dance recitals, plays and other activities. In 2004 a sound and light booth, coat racks and library were installed in the narthex. The lighting in the Cathedral was upgraded in 2007.
Kuantan Port, situated just 5 km to the east of Gebeng Industrial Area, is a multipurpose all-weather port capable of handling various kinds of cargo including containers, liquid, dry bulk and break bulk. Facing the South China Sea, it has been privatised since 1998 and is currently the leading maritime trade and logistics centre on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Infrastructure
The Organ
Kuantan is connected to Kuala Lumpur via the East Coast Expressway and Karak Expressway. The East Coast Expressway also links Kuantan to other major towns in Pahang although locals still prefer the old trunk road. Two other important east coast towns are Kota Bharu and Kuala Terengganu, connected via coastal trunk roads.

The organ, a gift of the women of the parish in 1927, is a Cassavant pipe organ, with three keyboards and two ranks of pipes. In 1927, the organ cost $8,700.00 CDN. It's replacement cost today would be close to $750,000.00 CDN. In addition to the organ, the Cathedral also uses a fine Baldwin grand piano.
Kuantan Airport is located just 15KM from the city and is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. It has daily shuttle services to Kuala Lumpur and Penang via Malaysia Airlines, low-cost subsidiary Firefly and Air Asia. The same runway is also used by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, which operates MIG-29s from the nearby Kuantan Air Force Base.

Furnishing
Medical needs are served by several hospitals and clinics. The main hospital is Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, which is equipped with various state-of-the-art equipment such as a CT scanner and MRI. It also serves as the teaching hospital for the Kulliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia. A Community Health Centre serves suburbs such as Beserah, while smaller clinics are situated in smaller suburbs such as Bandar Indera Mahkota. Two private medical centres also operate in Kuantan, namely the Kuantan Medical Centre and Kuantan Specialist Hospital.

Furnishings of interest are the solid brass eagle lectern (known affectionately as Big Bird since it was installed), a gift in 1890 to Archbishop Robert Machray on the 25th anniversary of his consecration as bishop, the intricately carved hexagonal oak pulpit (1907), the Italian marble font (1870), and a Coventry cross, made of nails salvaged from the mediaeval Coventry Cathedral which fell victim to the Blitz in World War II. The Cathedral also has a wealth of stained glass windows by various designers.
Kuantan has plans for massive infrastructural developments which is expected to come to fruition by 2012; Kuantan Sentral, in Bukit Goh will be built as one of the main components of The Planned Kuantan Metropolis. This state of the art transportation hub will also include the first Malaysian Trans-City-Speed Train connecting Kuantan and the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur through Kuala Lumpur Sentral.

Present
Kuantan is also planning the development of the first lagoon park in the east coast , Bukit Gambang Resort City. BGRC, a resort located on the Gambang Interchange will be one of the biggest and important project in the history of Kuantan.

Throughout its long history, St. John's Cathedral has always been considered on of Winnepeg's vibrant parishes, and remains so today. Since 2002, St. John's Cathedral has been the only Canadian site to host the annual Trinity Conference by web cast from New York. In addition to innovative education programs, the Cathedral also engages in many ministries. Among these is the Outreach Ministry which provides financial support in the form of grants to organizations and groups in Winnipeg's North End with programs like literacy projects, community kitchens and bursaries that help to improve and enhance the life of the residents of the area. The Cathedral also supports a ministry that provides a home for refugees newly arrived in Manitoba. Every year the Cathedral congregation contributes to Winnipeg Harvest's Shelf-Help program and also supports the Thelma Wynne Project with clothing for newborns and its own Joshua Tree program which provides children from low-income families with hats, scarves and mittens - most of which are handknit by members of the congregation. Every year, the Cathedral's unique Festival of Advent Lessons and Carols draws visitors from all over the Diocese of Rupert's Land with a re-enactment of a period of the Cathedral's rich history. Today, St. John's Cathedral truly lives up to its motto as the parish that cherishes its past, looks to the future and lives in the present.

Usually, Kuantan will go through two seasons which are Dry and Hot Season and also Humid Season. Dry and Hot Season occur when South-west seasonable wind blow to West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, and the Titiwangsa Mountain Range is blocking the wind from entering East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, this make the regional weather in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia being very hot and also drought, highest temperature may go to 40 Degree Celsius. When the Humid Season occur? Well, it is usually occur about October to March. During this season, North-east season wind will mainly blown to East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the wind come from the Siberia region, The Russian Federation. This will brings tonnes of sea water vapour and soon reaches here and form rain rapidly. The weather condition here will be very cloudy or overcast and usually it will raining everyday. When this happen, the gorverment will become alertness to the flood condition. The main flooding area in Kuantan District are along the Sungai Lembing and also a few area along the Kuantan River. But, this usually not affect the air plane to landing or take-off.

Another case you can while October is the haze condition before the reaching of North-east seaonable wind. There will be numerous of hotspots detected at Borneo Island and Sumatera Island. In 2006, Kuantan experience a serious air pollution and the visibility are going very low. The same case happen at other region of East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and also Singapore until 19th November 2006, which the Humid Season start.

Future Development
Kuantan will see many new developments including the relocation of the state administration centre to its proposed site in Bandar Indera Mahkota. Two tourist villages will be further developed, namely Cherating and Pantai Sepat.

A conceptual idea has been initiated for a high-speed train linking Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan.

Another project is Kuantan to become a regional conurbation of East Coast Peninsular Malaysia, but until now, government did not have any news to let Kuantan to be declared as a city, perhaps in 2008-2009 Kuantan will be declared as a city.

St. John's Anglican Catherdral

St. John's Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The cathedral church is located in the city's downtown on Anderson Avenue near Main Street and the Red River. St. John's Cathedral marks the birthplace of the Anglican Church in Western Canada.

History

The Four Churches

The Cemetery

The cemetery, which surrounds the cathedral, is considered by locals as the history of Winnipeg in stone. It was established by the Selkirk Settlers after their arrival in the Red River Settlement in 1812, so it pre-dates the parish by eight years. The oldest marked grave (1832) is that of eight-month-old George Simpson, son of George and Frances Simpson, the Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company and his wife. The earliest graves were destroyed in the flood of 1826.

Provincial Heritage Site

In September, 2004, St. John's Cathedral was designated as a Heritage Site by the Hon. Eric Robinson, Manitoba Minister of Culture, Heritage and Tourism. The historical designation covers both the cathedral and the surrounding cemetery.

Design and Architecture

Architecture

The present cathedral was designed by architects Parfitt and Prain, the cathedral is Norman-Gothic in style. The chancel was extended by eight feet in 2005 to allow for use of a chancel altar. All the furnishings in the chancel, with the exception of the organ console, can be removed, providing space for concerts, dance recitals, plays and other activities. In 2004 a sound and light booth, coat racks and library were installed in the narthex. The lighting in the Cathedral was upgraded in 2007.

The Organ

The organ, a gift of the women of the parish in 1927, is a Cassavant pipe organ, with three keyboards and two ranks of pipes. In 1927, the organ cost $8,700.00 CDN. It's replacement cost today would be close to $750,000.00 CDN. In addition to the organ, the Cathedral also uses a fine Baldwin grand piano.

Furnishing

Furnishings of interest are the solid brass eagle lectern (known affectionately as Big Bird since it was installed), a gift in 1890 to Archbishop Robert Machray on the 25th anniversary of his consecration as bishop, the intricately carved hexagonal oak pulpit (1907), the Italian marble font (1870), and a Coventry cross, made of nails salvaged from the mediaeval Coventry Cathedral which fell victim to the Blitz in World War II. The Cathedral also has a wealth of stained glass windows by various designers.

Present
