Jeli is a town and territory (jajahan) in Kelantan, Malaysia. As of 2000, the district's population is estimated to be 42,882. Jeli is administered by the Jeli District Council. Jeli is bordered by the state of Perak to the west, Thailand to the north, Tanah Merah district to the north east and Kuala Krai district to the south east.

Most of people in Jeli make the work as rubber tapper as their main way to earn money in order to continue their living. The rubber plantations which is belong to the local people also attracted the people from the outside of this place to come and work at this place.Usually, every family owned a small plantation over six ekcars and maybe up to 50 ekcars. The history of Jeli begin when the government encourage the people around the Kelantan to start the great area of agriculture in Jeli and its begin with the process of pembalakan.

History

Jeli district (jajahan) was originally a sub-district (jajahan kecil),which was formed on 1 July 1982 from parts of Tanah Merah and Kuala Krai district. It was elevated to a full district on 1 January 1986.

Politics

The member of Parliament for Jeli is Dato' Mustapa Mohamed, from Barisan Nasional party, the current Agricultural Minister.

Education

There are a number of schools which serve the population of Jeli. The primary schools in Jeli include Sekolah Kebangsaan Jeli 1, Sekolah Kebangsaan Kalai (Kalai National School), Sekolah Kebangsaan Jeli 2 and Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Jering. Jeli also has a MARA junior science college, Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Jeli, which is an example of Malaysia's affirmative action policy.

Tourism

The main attraction of this district is the Stong Waterfalls. Towering at a height of 305 m, this scenic waterfall is the tallest waterfall in the South East Asia region.
