Renzo Tondo (born 7 August 1956) is an Italian politician, former President of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Biography

Graduated in Political Sciences at the University of Trieste, Tondo began his career as hotel keeper.

First political experiences

Tondo moved into politics with the Italian Socialist Party, with which is elected mayor of his hometown Tolmezzo from 1990 to 1995.[1]

First gubernatorial term

In 1998, Tondo is Regional Councilor with Forza Italia and in 2001 he is appointed President of the Regional Council of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.[1] In 2006, Tondo is elected to the Chamber of Deputies.

Second gubernatorial term

In 2008, Tondo is re-elected President of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, supported by the whole centre-right coalition, defeating the incumbent governor Riccardo Illy, supported by the Democratic Party.[2] Five years later, in 2013, Tondo seeks once again the re-election, but is defeated by the centre-left candidate Debora Serracchiani.[3]

After the presidency of Friuli-Venezia Giulia

In 2015 he creates the political movement Autonomia Responsabile (Responsible Autonomy),[4] which later will be part of the political group Us with Italy.[5] In 2018, Tondo is re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies as centre-right candidate at the Uninominal electoral college of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

On 16 March 2018, Tondo was initially chosen by the center-right coalition as a candidate governor of Friuli Friuli-Venezia Giulia,[6] but five days later Massimiliano Fedriga from the Northen League became the official candidate, and was later elected President.[7]
