Medical schools in Singapore

List of medical schools in Singapore which award the medical degrees allowing practice as a registered medical doctor by the Singapore Medical Association (SMA) under Ministry of Health (Singapore) regulations.

Current

There are three institutes which grant the degrees, among those the Duke-NUS provides multidisciplinary dual degrees. Priority is given to the singaporeans in admissions. Applications begin in March e.g. March 2024 for Feb 2025 intake. Since these medical degrees are highly subsidized by the Singapore government, graduates are required to serve in Singapore's public healthcare sector after graduation for 5 years (Singapore citizens) or 6 years (Singapore permanent residents) which excludes housemanship or first year residency training. At NUS & NTU, top 10% performers in the admission interviews are invited to the respective school’s scholarship interviews, and nearly 5 of them will receive the scholarship from each of these two universities.

  • NTU LKC - Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine: 5-year MBBS, 150 per year seats (15% of applicants & 33% of shortlisted), 450 (45%) shortlisted out of near 1000 applicants. University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is required from 2024-25 onwards. Applications begin in March eg March 2024 for Feb 2025 intake. Following 4 documents are needed: A-level results, UCAT, personal statement (300 words) including list of achievements, 2 referee reports. Those joining from 2024 onwards & complete in or after 2029 will receive an NTU MBBS degree.[6] Applicants who have previously attended the MMI (Multiple Mini-Interviews of 2 rounds), will be allowed one chance of reapplication under the Aptitude-based Admissions Scheme (ABAS). Students who are undertaking another undergraduate degree or have completed undergraduate studies are not preferred.
  • NUS YLL - Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine: 5-year MBBS,[7] 280 seats per year (14% of applicants or 23% of shortlisted), 1200 (60%) shortlisted out of nearly 2000 applicants.[8] UCAT not required for Singapore A-level students, but needed for IB & International students.[9] At A-level, a good H2 pass in Chemistry and H2 pass in either Biology or Physics is required; and for calculating "University Admission Scores" (UAS) of the best six subjects (4 content-based subjects, H1 GP and H1 PW) at least one content subject must be from a contrasting discipline.[10] Following 4 documents are needed: portfolio of list of achievements, official testimonial, personal statement (500 words NUS), 2 referee reports (1 must be civics form tutor, ie. CCE Character and Citizenship Education tutor).
  • Duke–NUS Medical School, collaboration between Duke University & NUS, offers interdisciplinary "Doctor of Medicine" (MD) degrees for those who already have a breakfast degree and those who have passed a level. 72 seats per year. Those students who need to complete national service are not allowed to defer the studies.
    • Duke MD postgraduate pathway:
    • Duke Pre-MD undergraduate pathways for Singapore A-Level students: UCAT not required.
      • NUS Engineering & Medicine track: Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree at NUS followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Duke-NUS Medical School.[12]
      • Duke & Duke-NUS Special Pathway: Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in the last range of specializations at Duke University 8n USA, followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore.[13]
      • NTU-DUKE-NUS MEDICINE PATHWAY: Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences and Psychology or Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Duke-NUS Medical School.[16]

      • Duke Kunshan China-Duke-NUS Medicine Pathway: Bachelor's degree in Data Science and/or Global Health Biology at Duke Kunshan University (DKU) in Suzhou in China, followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Duke-NUS Medical School.[18]

Controversies

On 3 November 2020, in response to complaints that online platform DoctorxDentist was listing doctors' details without consent, SMA disseminated an email to its members saying that doctors had the right to be removed from doctor directories. It also offered to assist association members who wished to disassociate from DoctorxDentist for free.[19][20][21]
