Bear Behaving Badly is a British children's television comedy programme, broadcast as a series of 26 episodes from 3 September 2007 on BBC One and the CBBC Channel. Produced by Darrall Macqueen Ltd for CBBC, it stars Barney Harwood and Nev the bear, a puppet originally from the Sunday morning children's programme Smile.[1] A second series is due for transmission in December 2008.[2]

The programme also features the characters Andy Prank, a caretaker nicknamed Mr Angry Pants (played by Glen Davies), Beatrice (played by Allyson Brown) and Postie (Beverley Hills). The puppeteers for Nev and Crazy Keith are Ross Mullan and Simon Buckley.

Characters

  • Barney - a TV presenter for the BBC who lives in a flat with Nev.
  • Nev (Nevvy to Crazy Keith) - a small, blue, puppet bear who likes ice cream and his snuggly ducky duck duck. He has patches in places and is missing part of his ear, due to Bandit the cat trying to eat him. The little bear has trouble with pronouncing certain words and when scared or intimidated, he growls, just like a real bear would. He is friends with Barney, Beatrice, Crazy Keith and Postie and has a slight rivalry with Mr Prank and Bouncer Boy.
  • Crazy Keith - an illegal immigrant koala who lives under the floor boards with his mice friends the squealers (Andy Prank and Bouncer Boy don't know he is there).
  • Beatrice (Beetroot to Nev) lives in another flat next door to Barney and Nev who works in Mr Prank's ice cream van. Barney has a crush on her. She is apparently still at college.
  • Mr Andy Prank (Mr Angry Pants to Nev) also lives in a flat next door to Barney and Nev and he owns an ice-cream van. He is the caretaker of the block of apartments the main characters live in. He is the villain in the programme. Whenever around or near Nev, he sneezes, as Nev sets of his allergy.
  • Bouncer Boy (Bouncey Belly to Nev) is the nephew of Andy Prank. He has a cat called Bandit on his arm at most times.
  • Postie - a postwoman who delivers letters in the area and has a crush on Mr Prank, although her feelings for him aren't reciprocated.

New Characters

  • Aunt Barbara is a new character for series 2.
  • Niece Melanie is a new character for series 2.

Recurring characters

  • Uncle Rupert - Barney's uncle who is the owner of the block of flats, Barney has a picture of him in his flat that seems to change facial expressions.
  • Good and Bad Ducks - two ducks, sometimes seen with a halo and horns respectively, who act as Nev's good and bad side and who sometimes agree on what to do. The whizzing sound they make when they come into view is from Second Life, an online simulation computer game.
  • PC Morse a policeman in the area of Blackpool who doesn't seem to like Mr Prank, due to Nev or Keith always snitching on him when they mistakingly think he's done (or going to do) something illegal.

One-time characters

  • Pirate Doug - a pirate who delivers a treasure hunting disc from Barney's uncle rupert and an amulet to Nev. Ep. Treasure Hunt.

  • Mr Go-go-ices - Mr Prank's rival who he actually attempts to sell his double-chewy-honey-gooey ice cream recipe to. Ep. Blinga Stinga.
  • Go-go-ices Monkey - a man dressed as a monkey who works for Mr Go-go-ices (see above). Ep. Marathon Nev.
  • Gordon Ramshorn - an ice cream chef who reviews Mr Pranks ice cream, his name is obviously a reference to Gordon Ramsey. Ep. Celebrity Ice Cream Chef.
  • Marvin the Mad Clown - a silent clown burglar who was responsible for the robberies in the area. Ep. Clown Law.
  • Sergeant Slappy - an official from the Clown Prosecution Service who was looking for Marvin and knew that when Nev didn't laugh at him that something was up. Ep. Clown Law.

Background

The action of Bear Behaving Badly is centred on an apartment block owned by Barney's wealthy uncle Rupert Silverspoon. There are three flats on the ground floor. Barney and Nev live in Flat 1, Beatrice lives in Flat 2, and the caretaker, Mr Prank, lives in Flat 3. There are at least two more flats upstairs. A door under the stairs leads down to the boiler room.

Barney is a children's television presenter. he doesn't own a car and instead travels everywhere by tricycle. Barney and Beatrice share a mutual affection, though sometimes Barney is a bit shy when talking to her.

Mr Prank has an obsequious attitude towards Barney whom he frequently addresses as "Mr Barney, Sir." This feigned respect is on account of the fact that Barney's uncle is his employer. In addition Prank runs his own ice cream business from his ice cream van which is often seen parked outside the apartment block. He is allergic to Nev's blue fur but pretends to like him when Barney is nearby. As soon as Barney is out of sight Prank is nasty to Nev and makes his life a misery. Sometimes Nev retaliates by snarling, blowing a raspberry at, or even kissing Mr Prank on the nose and causing him to sneeze.

Nev has a favourite cuddly toy which he calls his Snuggly Ducky Duck Duck. He also likes to have plastic ducks floating in the water when he has a bath. Despite starring in a programme called Bear Behaving Badly, Nev usually tries to do the right thing, and only misbehaves as a response to difficult circumstances or situations. He likes ice cream, jam and sweets.
