Would you mind glancing at the astrosociobiology article and helping me figure out whether or not the proposal for deletion is spurious? I'm pretty sure this is just vandalism but I'd like someone else's opinion and it's on your watchlist. Moonsword 05:47, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone recently made a redirect to an article you deleted Leclanché cell. This gets 33,600 hits on Google and doesn't sound like the kind of page made just to say "You bastard Wikpedia". Can you look over at the history of the page and see if there's any genuine content? Thanks, --WikiSlasher 11:34, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well the article was recreated by him while I was typing, but can you check the revisions before the deletion anyway? Thanks, --WikiSlasher 11:36, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Transfair-produktauswahl.jpg

Hello,

About the "fair use" issue with the Image:Transfair-produktauswahl.jpg image... maybe I used the wrong tag - we have secured the authorization from the copyright holder, Transfair Germany, to release rights to the picture. This was done by a German Wikipedia user - although I could do it again easily, as I work for another sister Fairtrade organization.

I chose the copyright tag because the image is used "to promote their work or product in the media, such as advertising material or a promotional photo in a press kit" (reason why they chose to release it in the public domain in the first plage).

Please let me know - I'd like to fix this asap. THanks, Vincentl 21:59, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Edward.

What are the weird plants(?) near the orange flowers in this photo from Chernobyl? Shermozle 06:36, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had the luck to see the orange things in person. They are not flowers but some ceramic "art" whose sole purpose seems to be there and look ugly. --Shaddack 05:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deep Fried Pizza

Hi! I agree that Deep Fried Pizza is funny, but I didn't think Comedy Junk Food was really the right category for it as I got the impression that some of the other objects there were things that people have cooked for a laugh, whereas the Pizza was someone's idea of a meal and was a staple of children's lunches in Glasgow 20/30 years ago. Tragic Junk Food perhaps? By all means put it back if you want though. Stx 13:24, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt

From my user talk page: Hi, can you explain why you deleted the Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt article? What is the BLP issue you refer to? Edward 02:52, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Edward, thank you for inquiring. The article was not sourced and contained many negative statements. Although the subject is not alive, the way it was written reflects poorly on the living descendants named in the article. These statements need to be sourced and the article rewritten in a more balanced manner before it is returned to the main space. There was also a question about whether the article claims notability. The content of the article might be better placed in other related articles rather than its own article. Take care, FloNight 13:18, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

new category/userbox

Hi, i thought you might like add the following category to your user page.

Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: University of East Anglia

also i have created a user box for uea students/alumni. You may like to add it to your user page.

The code is {{User uea}}

what actually constitutes a "fair use" image then? the crest appears on the uea page thus i deemed it would also be acceptable in a userbox. --Jamesmh2006 10:00, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What does "commonscat" (surrounded by braces) mean/do on Circumnavigation. I was almost going to delete, but you seem like a serious person. Please answer me here. Bellagio99 14:25, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bellagio99, I should put more detail in my change summary. It adds the box that says 'Wikimedia Commons has media related to: Circumnavigation'. See commons:Category:Circumnavigation. Edward 14:31, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Edward. If I can presume with a follow-up questions: I'm a wordsmith, and a newbie picture monger. How do I get a picture into the (picture) Commons and/or into an article. I know the legal principles, but I need to know about how to do it, including asserting that it is clear of copyright. For example, a pix of my College Bowl 1962 team for the College Bowl article. Bellagio99 14:44, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, "commonscat" reads as "common animal crap" at first reading, which is what aroused my suspicion. Bellagio99 14:59, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Width of streets in Manhattan

Thanks for correcting and expanding my sentence about the width of streets and blocks in Manhattan. Edward 22:19, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • It was one of the scores of statements that had to be verified in the Manhattan article, so I set about doing the research. I had known for decades that Manhattan blocks were twenty per mile, and I was baffled as to why I couldn't find a source that says that. As I reworded in the article, the 200-foot blocks plus 60-foot streets are almost exactly 20 per mile, but off by a bit. There are an average of about two 100-foot streets every twenty blocks, so twenty per mile is often accurate. But this seems to be a coincidence rather than deliberate design. Thanks again for the note. Alansohn 01:18, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Potato chip sandwich, by CultureDrone (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Potato chip sandwich is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Potato chip sandwich, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Please note, this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Potato chip sandwich itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. --Android Mouse Bot 2 18:35, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reliable source for that? As far as I know, it's not even legal to use hydrogenated vegetable oils in human food in many countries. Would you mind if were to remove that sentence? --Wasell(D) 16:42, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image of HMV Oxford Street store

About a year ago, I tagged the discussion page of an image of an HMV store on Oxford Street in London, asking whether it was the 150 Oxford Street store or the 360 Oxford Street store. (I live in Arkansas, United States so I don't know; the best I could do is guess it was NOT the one inside Selfridges at 400 Oxford.) I was still fairly new to Wikipedia, so I didn't find your page to tell you personally. Over the ensuing year, the only "response" I got was another user seeming to "vandalize" my own user page; though I first thought he was accusing me of working for HMV at 150 Oxford, I now believe he may have been trying to tell me that the store in the image is in fact 150 Oxford.

Would you please update the image page on Commons, as well as its use in both the HMV and HMV Group plc articles, to indicate which of the two Oxford Street stores it is? --RBBrittain 20:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated British Airways Flight BA38, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/British Airways Flight BA38 and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 14:44, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Geograph railway station images

Hi there, I notice you've been finding numerous station images from the Geograph project, uploading them to Commons and adding them to the appropriate article here on Wikipedia. This is great but I am not sure it is appropriate in the number of cases which I've seen where you've replaced a much more up to date image in the infobox with an image from decades ago. I'd suggest that the most modern image should take priority since in many cases the station will have changed significantly so I'd ask that you move the older images out of the infobox where a more up to date image is available. Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London

Wikimedia UK logo
Wikimedia UK logo

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please forgive the slightly impersonal mass-invite!

Thanks for the nice words! I'm in the process of trying to get all of those within the 6 concentric Travelcard Zones! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 13:23, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the list. But you see, my main gripe with using FlickR is that most of their photos are low-res and many are out of date by at least a couple of years. I nowadays use 1600x1200 as a compromise between resolution and memory usage. I will get round to doing some of the stations south of the river in coming weeks, having been to all the Zone 6 extremities north of the river within the last seven months. At present I have at least one photo of over 180 Underground/National Rail/DLR stations within the Travelcard area! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 11:25, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's actually one of the nicer pictures, and very recent too. If I were there I would taken shots looking up and down, taken the active up side bay, the lifted down side bay, the branded signage and the station exterior! I actually passed through most of the stations listed on my Talk Page in recent weeks in order to reach the Zone 6 boundary (including Gordon Hill on the way to Crews Hill), as part of a parallel project to travel over all the Tube, Heavy and Light railways in the London Travelcard area - but still, 219 stations at last count as of this morning (since late last year)! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 12:14, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Swinton (South Yorkshire) railway station photograph. From Tudorminstrel I have just been looking at the site and seen the photo attached with a dmu passing through the station. This is incorrect. The dmu is on a local service from Sheffield to Doncaster and is passing through Swinton Central. I presume you do not know the area, the canal to the rear of the station is the South Yorkshire Navigation and the area of land beyond that was the home of the Swinton pottery. (Just beyond that is the main road over which I rode on a trolley bus (Trackless to us up here) to school for 5 years. Any chance of moving it to the right place? Cheers.

Hey, nice tool

Sorry about the revert on the Anchor baby article. I reverted myself after looking at your bot-inspired edit more closely. In fact, your edit inspired me to create another link to the Letter to the editor article. --Ramsey2006 (talk) 03:50, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Shepherd's Bush Overground

Hi Edward, not sure if you knew already but I only learnt Friday (from the TfL Oyster mailing list) that Shepherd's Bush railway station opened today. Naturally I was there with my camera! best, Sunil060902 (talk) 19:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Links to Dates

In WP "full" dates are linked (eg [[28 May]] [[1324]]) so that they are displayed in the style in the reader's preferences. Perhaps inconsequential but that's how they like it.--SilasW (talk) 20:13, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
