Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

      Organisations editing their own entries

Hi, I am looking for clarification on Wikipedia's policies on individuals or organisations editing articles on themselves.

Can you please confirm (or point me in the direction) of the rule that says you may edit articles on yourself. If the answer is "yes you may" obviously this does not give one the right to delete correct information simply because it is deemed undesirable. I would like confirmation that you can correct incorrect information about oneself or one's organisation.

      Cheers Matt (talk) 00:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. It may depend if the article passes WP:BIO. In most cases that usually happen, articles about yourself is speedy deleted because of it's notability. May I have a link to the article you found this situation in?--RyRy5 (talk) 00:49, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As an example, if I were the Communications Manager of a Government department, and there was incorrect information included in the article on my organisation, is there any rule against me correcting it or indeed adding to it? Matt (talk) 00:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. You are free to edit the article no matter if you are part of it. But if it is about a real person, it's different depending on WP:BIO.--RyRy5 (talk) 00:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There could be conflict of interest concerns.. have a look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for general advice. The best way to avoid trouble is to source anything you add to it. Friday (talk) 00:56, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Another good idea is to instead discuss your concerns on the Talk page of the article. In many cases, other editors are watching and will respond to your valid concerns. That way, you have less to worry about in the conflict of interest arena. The specific guideline is within the article Friday has pointed you to, here. Franamax (talk) 02:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot see why there should be any impediment to a person or organisation creating or editing articles about themselves. The obvious danger is that such material might not have a NPOV, and could be intended for propaganda purposes. The less obvious, but no less real problem comes about through WP’s regulation that material presented must derive from previous and published research, and not from private research or personal reminiscences, communications and the like. It would be a disciplined writer indeed who could discriminate between objective and previously published material concerning their public and private affairs and their own autobiographical recollection of the same, and favour the former whilst disarding the latter, no matter how compellingly it might loom in their minds. Non free use image in template problem.

The non free use image NSWPF logosmall.jpg is in the template {{New South Wales Police Force}} and was botted as per User:SoxBot VIII/logfile#470000.

This template DOES use the image in ACCORDANCE with the rules relating to the fair use of images relating to an organisation, in this case solely to represent the organisation holding the rights to the image.

How do I stop this image being botted again ?

      Peet Ern (talk) 00:54, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It needs a Fair Use Rational (FUR). A good one for this is {{Logo fur}}. The bot will keep botting it until one is placed, as it is required by law. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:12, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Calvin is partially right. It does need a fair use rationale. However, it is unevitable to stop the bot, because it is enforcing one of the NFCC criteria, that states "fair use only in mainspace". I have removed the image once more, because it is violating the NFCC policy in the template namespace. WP:FUE states, "They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes), portals, user pages, categories, Help, MediaWiki, or the Project namespace." Only under extreme circumstances does the bot skip it, and it needs to be taken up with me so I can program it in. Soxred 93 02:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      *bonks self on head* - must remember that rule... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 04:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've found being corrected by others on the Help desk to be a marvelous aid to memory. The more glaring my gaffe, the more clearly I recall it. This is actually related to how the brain forms long-term memories. If being corrected feels too traumatic, one possibility might be propranolol. --Teratornis (talk) 07:59, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My account seemed to be hacked

My account User:NordicFire will not let me log in with the password I set. I made sure I got the random verification code correct. This is the second time my account password has seemed to be changed and now it says I do not have a e-mail address listed so I can recover the password. I did, thats how I got a temp. password to chage it the first time, but now it says I do not. What is going on? Can I get an admin to reset it for me? How can I verify that the account is mine so this can happen? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.197.94.171 (talk) 04:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um.. the email and password only the account controller can see and change. And administrator can permanently block the hacked account, if you can prove it really has been taken over. Then you will have to make a new account. On this new one, you may want to secure it by placing a {{Committed identity}} on the userpage. Calvin 1998 (t-c) 04:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's made no contributions since January so I don't think it's been taken over. If you've lost your password and have no email addres then I'm afraid you won't be able to access your account. Only the account holder has the power to change their details using Special:Preferences. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 07:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      DAB John Billingsley

      Resolved

There is already an article for John Billingsley an american actor but I've recently been reading about John Billingsley (1747-1811) of Ashwick where he is buried.[1] He was the writer of the 1794 Survey of Somerset, and a leading agriculturalist who was one of the founders of the Bath and West Society, known today as the Royal Bath and West of England Society. There is a whole chapter on him in Atthill, Robin (1971). Old Mendip (2nd ed.). Newton Abbot: David & Charles. ISBN 0715351710.. I realise a disambiguation page would be needed but which should be the "primary" article & how should the Somerset John Billingsley article be named.— Rod talk 08:57, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Probably unnecessary as there are only two. I suggest putting a dablink at the top of the actor's page (when the article exists). Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 09:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK Thanks I can do that (when I've written the article), but do you think "John Billingsley (Somerset)" is a suitable title as it looks a bit like a place name - would "John Billingsley, agriculturalist" be better?— Rod talk 09:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have a read of WP:NCP - that should help. Has John Billingsley got a middle name? In which case John Xavier Billingsley might be a possibility. However, given the choice of agriculturalist or Somerset, I would go with agriculturalist (with it written in parenthesis, not after a comma), as it is a description of what he was, not where he came from - much more informative from an encyclopedic point of view. StephenBuxton (talk) 14:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks John Billingsley (agriculturist) now created (will do further work) - dablink added to both articles.— Rod talk 15:00, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And nice job too if I may say so! – ukexpat (talk) 13:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How do i get collapsible tables on my wiki?

My wiki doesn't support them yet. How do i update it? Any help much appreciated. Not sure if this is precisely right place to ask this, if not, where should i go? Thanks 92.21.165.55 (talk) 12:26, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "my wiki", but here's how you do it here on Wikipedia:
      This is a collapsible table!

Here's some stuff inside that table that you want to collapse!

The trick is the class="collapsible" part at the top of the table. You might also be interested in the class keyword "collapsed", which defaults the table to its closed state. Also, if you want the table to span across, you might want to also use the "navbox" class too. More information can be found at Help:Tables and Wikipedia:Collapsible tables. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 12:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you are interested in how to do this on MediaWiki software outside of Wikipedia (which is technically outside the scope of this page), you might be interested in m:Help:Collapsing, which indicates that it was accomplished through JavaScript additions to MediaWiki:Common.js -- ShinmaWa(talk) 12:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, thanks! So I should able to just copy and paste MediaWiki:Common.js to replace my wiki's Common.js? And that'll give collapsible tables? That's what i did but i think i buggered it up. It's not actually 'my' wiki but here it is: [2] (and yeah, apologies for putting this question in the wrong place - feel free to move it if it's more appropriate) 92.21.165.55 (talk) 13:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would stick to copying only the collapsible table part, which is about 30% down in the script. YMMV. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 16:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
mw:Project:Support desk is the appropriate place to ask questions about MediaWiki administration for wikis other than Wikipedia. However, the Wikipedia Help desk gives faster response, even to inappropriate questions. Of course, the less appropriate a question is for the Help desk, the less likely that the answers will help. You can find a lot of how-to information for MediaWiki by using the various {{Help desk searches}}, especially the searches on Meta-Wiki and MediaWiki.org. --Teratornis (talk) 17:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Moved articles

When an article is moved by the "move" tab, are all previous edits kept intact and moved to the new article name? Isn't this confusing for someone who never edited say article X, which was moved from article Y, but who's contributions show that they have? Is this in compliance with the GFDL? Plasticbounceman (talk) 14:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When the page is moved, a redirect is formed, so the pages are still linked. Yes, all the history is preserved, and the new name will show up in every page history, including watchlists, contributions and so on. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 14:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:MOVE#Page histories. And speaking of confusing, it can be annoying when two similar but nonidentical articles exist, and some particular word or phrase logically links to one and not the other, people make many such links, and then later a deletionist decides to delete the content from one of the articles and make it a redirect to the other. The result can be that some links to the redirect page no longer make as sense as they did originally. An example was the peaknik article, which coherently described the types of people who promote peak oil theory. We had a bunch of links from articles about people who promote peak oil theory to the peaknik article. After the deletionists gutted the peaknik article, without bothering to fix all the links they rendered less coherent, now all those links go to the peak oil article, and from the context that often makes little sense. When someone clicks on a jargon term, they expect to see a concise definition of the jargon term, not some complex discussion about a related topic from which they would have to laboriously infer the definition of the jargon term they saw initially. (If you ever click a link in Wikipedia and find yourself asking "Huh?" because the resulting page is not what you expected, chances are your link made more sense once upon a time, before someone degraded Wikipedia by moving or merging pages without bothering to check the backlinks.) So, basically, when someone moves an article, or guts an article and turns it into a redirect, they should examine all the backlinks and fix all the links that made more sense in light of the previous article content or title. That in turn requires understanding what the original contributors were thinking when they added the links which the later move or deletion degraded. --Teratornis (talk) 17:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I found your answers helpful and informative. However, my second question was not addressed. Is altering the location and title of an article a user contributed to in compliance with the GFDL? Plasticbounceman (talk) 14:49, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Found Vandalism

I don't edit Wikipedia. I found vandalism, but do not want to make changes through my work computer. Listed under the article for Chappaquiddick incident, in the section Inquest, third paragraph the word "boobs" is used. It does not belong there, but I do not have any knowledge to fix it. The sentence in question is:

"Under Massachusetts law boobs could have ordered Kennedy's arrest, but he chose not to do so.[8] District Attorney Dinis chose not to pursue Kennedy for manslaughter, despite Judge Boyle's conclusions."

      If this could be fixed.

I think the ban is expired, but no one has removed his name from the list. Obviously, the ban has, and should've had expired 27 days ago, yet, no one has removed his name from the list! Can someone check it out? Thank you.Kitty53 (talk) 18:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From a technical standpoint, I think you're correct since the user was banned by Arbcom, rather than consensus. However, I'm not aware of any consensus to unblock (or any reason to do so, given the history of disruption), so I'm not sure what the point of removing his name would be. (Since if no one's willing to unblock, then he's still banned via consensus, if not via arbcom). Just my $0.02, --Bfigura (talk) 18:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AN may be more appropriate, actually. It's where banning discussion often takes place, so I don't see why unbanning discussion can't. However, it's quite possible that the user may remain "community banned" if no admin is willing to unblock him (and, if the user isn't going to come back, any unbanning would be purely symbolic, really). If you want to reduce your odds of coming back to ask Why was my article deleted?, you could tell us about the article you want to create, and we could comment on its potential notability and other possible grounds for deletion. Wikipedia deletes thousands of articles by new users for failing to comply with our complex and unobvious policies and guidelines, so a little discussion here before you plunge ahead could save you some grief. Some types of articles are deletion magnets (such as: articles about someone's garage band), while other articles are more likely to "stick" (such as an article about a major public work in your area, such as a large dam or bridge). We can at least tell you if your topic starts out with a bullseye on its back. --Teratornis (talk) 18:20, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Machete97 (talk) 02:12, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing any vandalism here. Looks like he accidentally (or maybe intentionally) created an article page on his user page the moved it into article space when he felt it was ready to "go live". Usually when people do that, they do it with a subpage rather than their main user page, but there's nothing wrong with doing it that way... who am I to judge? -- ShinmaWa(talk) 02:21, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what "wrong" means either, but I do know "inexpedient." Creating articles directly on one's User page may confuse other editors, as it did in this case, because the user page does not label itself clearly as being a sandbox or scratch page. User subpages are much better for this, because: (a) more users would recognize them as sandbox pages, and (b) an informative user will label his or her subpage collection and explain what they are (for example, I label mine here: User:Teratornis#User sub-pages - hmmm, and come to think of it, maybe I don't want that hyphen). On Wikipedia it is customary for every user to explain his or her actions to other users, for example by leaving informative edit summaries, and by explaining complex actions on talk pages. I think labeling one's user subpages clearly enough to be understandable is in keeping with that spirit. After all, Wikipedia cannot hold together unless users can easily figure out what other users are doing. --Teratornis (talk) 18:13, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently cleaning up the above article. If you look at the article, you should notice that it doesn't have external links and it's references. If you edit the article, the external links and refs are there. I can't seem to find out why the refs and external links don't show without being edited. Is it a wikimarkup problem or is it just my PC? Much help would be appreciated. Thanks. -- RyRy5 (talk) 06:19, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RyRy5. In my experience the most common reason for this sort of error is a badly-formatted reference, so the first thing I checked was whether the end of the displayed text was a reference. Sure enough it was, and that ref was missing its </ref> tag. So the entire rest of the article was being interpreted as part of the reference, and not as text to display. I've fixed it now.
In this case the ref was the last in the article, but sometimes it can happen earlier on:
<ref>My friend told me it was true
Here is some lovely prose for my article
<ref>How could you even doubt this fact?</ref>
      And some more prose
Causing the "Here is some..." paragraph to disappear mysteriously because the software is waiting to find a </ref> tag.
      Best, Olaf Davis | Talk 08:10, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed that before. Thanks, Olaf Davis. Regards, RyRy5 (talk) 08:18, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is a shame that MediaWiki cannot automatically detect an unclosed <ref> tag. That's such an easy error to make, and the result is baffling to a user who hasn't learned about it yet. The Help desk gets this question fairly often. I can't imagine the error would be all that hard to detect in the software. But maybe it is hard to detect, since we have had this problem for a long time. --Teratornis (talk) 18:29, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, its simplistically easy to detect. However, as a general rule, MediaWiki tends to take a hands-off approach to user submissions and does not throw errors or "adjust" the user's input in any way. Traditionally, the detection and correction of problems such as these have been left to bots. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 18:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be another one of those folks, but, "you deleted my image" - File:Kips bay.jpg. I was wondering - is there any recourse for me on this? I found the NYPL link on Wikipedia:Public_domain_image_resources, and I did actually call the permissions desk of the library, where I was verbally granted permission to use this image on Wikipedia. Did I tag improperly? Is this not a valid way to "earn" permission to use an image? CSD A7

      Resolved
       – Article must assert subject's notability. If it even has a vague/hoax-y assertion, off to AFD it goes. (PeterSymonds's reply, basically) Calvin 1998 (t-c) 18:56, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This may not be the right place to ask this, but I seem to be having some trouble understanding CSD A7. Like when an article should be tagged with it or not. I've been around for a while, but I can't seem to get a handle on this criteria. Any help with explaining it would be greatly appreciated. Thingg 04:17, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether you have seen the documentation, so my answer must branch:
      • If you have not seen the documentation, see: WP:CSD#A7.
      • If you have seen the documentation, tell us which part you did not understand, and we will explain further. Sometimes it turns out that a documentation page is unclear, and if we find out exactly which part was confusing, we can improve it for the next reader.
More information about the deletion process is at WP:EIW#Delete. You probably need to read the (many) pages that the section in WP:CSD#A7 links to, so you understand the underlying concepts of notability and so on. See WP:WWMPD for information from the perspective of the "victims" of deletion. If you are the one placing these templates on articles, no matter how much they deserve it, you should still be sensitive to what it feels like on the receiving end. --Teratornis (talk) 04:41, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This means a subject must be notable with secondary sources etc. If not it will be deleted. I think this is resolved now. StewieGriffin! • Talk 09:47, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite. It's if the subject does not assert notability. If there is an assertion, then it can't be A7'd. Even if it's non-notable with a vague assertion of notability, it should go to AfD. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 09:49, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the standard for A7 isn't even that high: An article about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This is distinct from questions of verifiability and reliability of sources, and is a lower standard than notability. Maybe [citation needed] ({{fact}}), followed by your "not-specified-precisely-enough" ref. StewieGriffin! • Talk 09:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or take it out completely. If it doesn't accurately verify the information, then it shouldn't be there. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 09:48, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. I think [citation needed] could be used instead. Check out the policy page. StewieGriffin! • Talk 09:50, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If I were you I'd take it out and seek out the person who put it there, perhaps via the article's talk page, and invite them to replace it if they can be more specific. Of course, if you can work out how to clarify it yourself that's even better - but leaving it with a {{fact}} template is definitely not ideal. Olaf Davis | Talk 10:25, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The ideal would be to fix it, but you can tag it with {{dubious}}. A list of related tags are in the See also for {{fact}}. --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 16:48, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI for the Help Desk volunteers

In the event we get the Avril vandal again (those who were here a moment ago, or frequent the Ref Desks, will know who I mean), memorize your Wikipedia:Keyboard shortcuts so that you can search through the various header templates we use to find the one that got vandalized. In this case, it was WP:HDPATROL that got hit, so don't expect it to be something obvious - if it transcludes here, it'll display here. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 13:25, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      listing a person on wikipedia

how is a person listed or newly added to your encyclopedia? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pokesya (talkcontribs) 17:30, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An article is created by Wikipedians or people just like you or me. In order to create an article, first one must create an account (which it appears you've already done). Once you are ready to start your article, simply go to the page where you'd like to write. The easiest way to do that is to enter the person's name in the Search Box on the right, then click "Go". At that point, you can create the article. See "Your first article" for more information on this, including the Wikipedia pillars of verifiability, reliable sources, and neutral point of view.
Because you are writing an article about a person, you also need to determine if this person is notable enough for Wikipedia. Take a look at the notability requirements for people before you get started on the article. If you are writing about a living person, also take a look on our requirements on biographies of living persons. If you are planning to write about yourself, I would encourage you to think twice before doing that. See our guidelines on autobiographies for reasons why this is a bad idea. Good luck! -- ShinmaWa(talk) 17:46, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot find articles anymore. Please help me!

Hi, I am new here and I need help. I tried to find some articles about Pokemon here but every time when I click on a name of a Pokemon in List of Pokemons I get to a wrong page with only some sentences to them. I can't find the big articles of each Pokemon anymore. I am really sad because I want to inform me about some Pokemon and I thought I would find information here but I don't. :-( I am sure I saw big articles about some Pokemon some months ago when I saw this website the first time. But I can't find them anymore. :-( Please help me! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.167.119.20 (talk) 20:58, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The articles were redirected from the Pokemon article to the list of pokemeon. This probably happended due to notability failure of the original article. Articles like Pikachu are notable enough to have it's own article. Hope this helps. -- RyRy5 (talk) 21:07, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can find the former content of a redirected page although it's no longer considered a part of the encyclopedia. When you click a name on List of Pokémon, the top of the page may say something like "(Redirected from Parasect)". Click the name there, then click the "history" tab, and click on the date of an older version of the page from before it was redirected. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:55, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Combining category and template search

I am interested in identifying all articles in a particular **category** that have been flagged as unverified, partially cited, or dubious. I understand how to get the list of pages linking to "Template:Unreferenced"; but I'd like to further narrow that voluminous list to articles about particular subjects. I've tried using Google Advanced Search of Wikipedia.org specifying various combinations of the "unreferenced" text, and have tried toggling the namespace boxes within Wikimedia search; nothing seems to give me enough results to satisfy me that these techniques are correct :) Does anybody have any advice for me? creating article lead section that is not included in article outline

My question is the following: How do I create an article title and lead section without them being included in the article outline?

There is a lot of information on wikipedia on the style, content, and format that a lead section should have. However, I can find nothing on how to create a lead section. For example, if I use the sectioning syntax (=, ==, ===, etc.) to create a title, then this title will be included in the article outline. Using the "edit this page" tab does not help as it does not show the source for the lead section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Koures (talkcontribs) 01:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Click "edit this page" and write the lead at top of the edit box before the first section heading == ... ==. The article title is automatically the name of the edited page and is not written in the edit box. By the way, the list of linked section names is called the table of contents. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And see: WP:SECT#Section editing and WP:SECT#Editing before the first section. I will look at WP:LEAD and make sure it tells how to edit the lead section. --Teratornis (talk) 02:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Amazingly, it appears that WP:LEAD does not tell anywhere how to edit the lead section. It just talks about what the lead section should contain. Obviously that could confuse a new user who reads WP:LEAD before reading WP:SECT. I will fix that later this evening, unless someone else beats me to it. I'm thinking to add a small section: WP:LEAD#How to edit that will summarize this: WP:SECT#Editing before the first section. --Teratornis (talk) 02:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually there were a few sentences in WP:LEAD#Sections and table of contents that mentioned how to edit the lead section, but they were probably not clear to new users, so I expanded them into WP:LEAD#How to edit. I added some section shortcuts to it (for example, WP:LEAD#EDIT). --Teratornis (talk) 02:46, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How do I get a list of a particular user's contributions sorted by the number of characters they added in each contribution? Thanks! --Pascal666 (talk) 09:50, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting question. Special:Contributions does not seem to display the number of characters per edit at all. I guess that information is only in the history of a given page. Most likely, to generate this kind of information for a given user, you would have to figure out the links under WP:EIW#Query. I haven't gotten that far myself, so unfortunately I can't help you yet. However, the Help desk gets a steady trickle of requests for reports that evidently could only come from SQL queries on Wikipedia's database. Therefore, it would be nice if we had a good answer for these types of questions, as in actually being able to run the queries ourselves. You might try asking again on WP:VPT where there are usually more technically-inclined people. --Teratornis (talk) 16:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

referencing my edit to the article on Carmenere wine

Hi I'm a grower of this grapevine and yesterday made a change to the text to correct an error (about why the grapevine has a name derived from the french word for crimson). I attempted to reference this to myself - essentially a personal (though well qualified) comment - with a link to our website. The source of the information I was trying to reference to was our website page (http://www.amietta.com.au/nbspnbspnbspnbspnbspWines/AngelsShareCabernetblend/tabid/64/Default.aspx).

The change to the text has remained, but the reference and link have gone. So now the author of the incorrect data is referenced as the source of the corrected data. My ego isn't troubled - it's just that it's not an accurate reference. If you think it's worth changing, perhaps you could let me know how to do it. Superhero boxes

Hello. I am new to wikpedia and I believe there is something reffered to as "Superhero Boxes". They show the stats of superheroes and villains and whatnot. However I don't know how to make them. Help me please? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by Techno^Punk (talkcontribs) 21:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I believe what you are referring to is what we call an "infobox". Infoboxes provide a standardized way to enter in summary data about an article's subject. We have dozens, if not hundreds, of infoboxes for all kinds of things, from politicians to plant species to comic book characters. The infobox you are probably interested in is {{infobox superhero}}. Also, please look at our information on templates on how to use all kinds of templates, including infoboxes, on Wikipedia. Lastly, you might be interested in Wikipedia's project on comics. The people there should be happy to assist you with comics/superhero-specific questions. Good luck! -- ShinmaWa(talk) 22:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Usually an infobox appears in the lead section of an article, and sometimes this confuses new users, who don't see an obvious way to edit the text at the top of an article. See WP:LEAD#EDIT for tips. --Teratornis (talk) 02:49, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I've uploaded the SVG version of an image on Commons.

Thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia. You might be having problems changing the template because the image is actually not on Wikipedia, but on commons at commons:Image:Germanen_50_n._Chr.png. From here, you can click on "Edit", then just replace {{svg|map}} with {{Vector version available|new image name.svg}} -- ShinmaWa(talk) 22:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When I try to edit or view a page history while logged in I get "Detected bug in an extension! adding categories to my user page

      Hello,

I have had a look at all of the FAQs but cannot find the answer to this. I also have comment, but am unsure where to direct.

Q.1: I want to add categories to my user page; I noticed other users pages and copied source code from their page to mine (For example I added myself to the category of "Wikipedians in London") But I would like to browse other categories to which I can add myself. After extensive searching through pages of the categories list**, there seem hundreds of thousands of categories and I cannot find what I am looking for. I read your page about not having a tree structure, which is what I was looking for. I would like to know if there is a specific page on wikipedia which users can draw from to choose sensible* (i.e. *not such categories as "°C-ute members"), particularly categories (that are relevant wikipedians' personal pages.

Q.2: I would also like to know how the 'signpost' boxes for representing a category were invented? As these are really nice. For example the box 'logo' that appears on the "Wikipedians in London".

C.1: The comment I'd like to make (or redirect?) is that it would maye be useful to have categories relevant to user pages separately listed. The nearest I can find to the kind of page I am looking for is in this list **http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ACategories&offset=Wikipedians. Some kind of tree structure would be helpful because there are so many. For example, "Wikipedians by alma mater..." goes on for 1000+ entries; I would find it more helpful to have them grouped under one "Wikipedians by alma mater..." at first and then the specific ones listed as sub-categories. This may already exist and I have simply misunderstood the search function, or another page exists with this information on that I didn't know about.

C.2 It probably is mentioned in one of the help pages somewhere, but would be very useful if this search page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Categories had a reference on it to say that searching categories is case sensitive.

      Hope you can help. Thanks.

      Applet (talk) 04:08, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The master category for such things is Category:Wikipedians -- if you browse around it's sub-categories (there are a lot) you may be able to find what you're looking for. Sounds like you're also looking for Wikipedia:Userboxes (page includes a galley of them, towards the bottom). – Luna Santin (talk) 04:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You may prefer to search Wikipedia's Category: namespace with Google, because Google is not case-sensitive with respect to search keywords, and Google suggests alternate spellings. Many folks consider Google to be mostly less annoying than Wikipedia's built-in search feature. I mostly agree with them. See Help:User page so you understand what user pages are for, and see WP:NOT#MYSPACE for what they aren't. Basically, user pages exist primarily to serve the encyclopedia project, not for general socializing, although as you have seen, that rule allows for broad interpretation. Try to at least pretend everything you do on Wikipedia is to make the encyclopedia better, even if indirectly. It helps to study a bunch of featured articles so you can see where we are trying to take all 6,825,820 articles. --Teratornis (talk) 05:23, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Please see Your first article.
      1. Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
      2. Make sure the subject is notable enough to have their own article.
      3. Find references
      4. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box to the left (←) and clicking 'Search'
      5. Type the page name in the search box to the left (←) and click 'Go'
      6. Click 'Create this page'
      7. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
      8. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones. Starting new page with existing template

Hi, is it possible to start a new page, for instance:

      Today

But when you click on that page, there is content generated automatically with a 'fill in the blanks' kind of scenario?

It's difficult to explain exactly what I mean, so I will try to explain another way.

I want the ability for someone to click on that 'Today' link and when they are presented with the empty new page, there is already data/information there derived from a template.

Also see Wikipedia:Categorization#Category sorting. Frequently "main articles" are sorted as '*' so that they're listed first in the category (say, Ship and Category:Ships). – Luna Santin (talk) 09:53, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the * means that the page gets sorted under the * heading. The latter means that it gets orted under "c" (for Category). On the other hand, [[Category:Fractions|{{PAGENAME}} gets sorted under the F heading, for Fractions. Soxred 93 11:02, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, if you don't specify anything with a pipe, it defaults to the name of the page; it never gets sorted under "c" for category. Piping {{PAGENAME}} is used to override magic words, so that the page always sort under the page name. Can you imagine how large the C entry would be for every category page if this wasn't true!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 11:19, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Citing encyclopædia

When citing an encyclopædia does one give the editor as the author or do you leave it blank? Harland1 (t/c) 13:06, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just FYI, the Helpdesk is for questions about using Wikipedia, and in the future questions such as these would be better off at the Reference Desk. It appears that it depends on which style of citation you plan to use - http://lib.trinity.edu/research/citing/books/bookreference.shtml has some examples of citing encyclopedias. -- Natalya 13:38, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If this question is just about citing an encyclopedia, then I agree that it's better placed at the Reference desk. However, I think it not at all improbable that this question is about citing Wikipedia, but just stated in general language. If so, it is a fine fit with this page. To cite Wikipedia, go to the article you wish to cite, then click on "Cite this page" which is the bottom link on the toolbox menu on the left hand side of the page. As you can see, in many of the citation styles, the author is listed as "Wikipedia contributors". For further information, please see Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia. I hope this helps. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:09, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The question might be about citing an encyclopedia as a source for a Wikipedia article. Some articles incorporate text from encyclopedias which are now in the public domain; see: {{1911}} and Wikipedia:1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica. We also have a {{cite encyclopedia}} template to use in footnotes. So, that's three possibilities and counting for this ambiguous question. The questioner could remove the ambiguity by specifying which encyclopedia, and for what. --Teratornis (talk) 23:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sorry. I was citing an encyclopedia of animals in Long-nosed Potoroo. And I was wondering what to put in the author section. Harland1 (t/c) 12:45, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Modifying an inaccurate entry about me

Thank you for any help you can offer me with this.

While I don't think the article is likely to be deleted soon, you need to do two things to make sure: (1) in the article, include claims of notability (that's pretty much covered) (2) back up these claims (and as much of the rest of the article as possible) with references to reliable, third-party sources. I think you, or someone, has tried to put the references in, but hasn't gotten them quite right - take a look at WP:CITE. Confusing Manifestation(Say hi!) 23:09, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I recently came across a page for Zyvex, ( a private company ) which looks and reads like marketing material. Why hasn't their page been tagged and deleted? It's hard to know what is correct when there is so much variability on the site. Isn't the Zyvex page considered spam given the Wikipedia guidelines?

Your input would be greatly appreciated as it will help me learn by example.

Be bold and add the tags yourself, if you think the page needs them. This page could be edited to become more neutral, so I would recommend the {{advert}} tag. — Insanity Incarnate 20:36, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Plenty of articles exist that probably should not and many others are in a bad state that haven't yet been tagged for cleanup that should be. There is no central authority that cleans up articles and because of the huge number of articles that are created every day, many slip through the cracks upon creation and may sit around for a very long time without anyone loking at them. So generalizing from any article's existence or state to conclude that it meets policy or has been inspected and "passed" or is "grandfathered in", is faulty. Please see WP:OTHERSTUFF by analogy. You found it, you've read our policies; go right ahead and judge for yourself and do what Insanity Incarnat advised above. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The plan is that eventually, creating an account on one wiki, will basically give you an account on every wiki automatically. It won't really be "forced" as the process will appear the same as creating an account now, except it will create the global account at the same time without having to manually merge accounts. That probably won't be done until existing conflicts are resolved though. Mr.Z-man 00:01, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I would like to embed the video of Russell Means found on [7] into the Republic of Lakotah article. It shows his views, opinions, and reasoning. Should it be in the article? Furthermore, how does one embed a video on Wikipedia? The embed code given by YouTube doesn't work. Thanks, Ζρς ι'β' ¡hábleme! 21:29, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can't embed media directly from external sites. If the video's licensing is appropriate (see commons:Commons:Licensing), it's possible to upload a video in Ogg Theora format and use it as if it were an image. Otherwise, just linking makes more sense than trying to embed, which creates legal problems (copyright) and technical problems (using bandwidth from another site and introducing a security hole). --ais523 21:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
You can use the {{YouTube}} template to link to a video. If someone else thinks the link is improper, they will remove it. --Teratornis (talk) 23:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I want to read about Teddy Stauffer, but cannot find anything in English. There is this German page, but I can't figure out how to translate. Can you please help me? Thanks so much. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.170.15.177 (talk) 23:38, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look like there's an English Wikipedia article, but you can use various web translators to translate it into English. Here is the translation that Google did. -- Natalya 00:01, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is what it says near to the bottom of the page, under the heading "Opinion" and added by the user Rockpocket, in answer to your remark about "clocking in" - "By the way, you don't need to clock in because we don't get paid". Hope that is clear now.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 00:05, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[First], the users that contribute to Wikipedia aren't paid, this is a totally voluntary project. No one is forced to contribute to the encyclopedia, and [Second], comments like "we're glad you're here" are for welcoming users to the Wikipedia project, not to disturb users. macytalk 00:11, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I presume you understand now that this is voluntary? With regard to your last comments, no-one is bullying you and I am sorry you feel that way. It is just how things work on wikipedia that some articles get proposed for deletion, it isn't personal against you, it happen every day. When you say you are new though, on your user page you say that you have "many years editing on Wikipedia as annonymus. So Im not exactly new at this." I would very much doubt that Rockpocket was being sarcastic with the welcome message.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 00:14, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      Twin Peak Towers - Wikipedia

I have tried to correct very misleading information about a new apartment building in Jakarta, i.e. Twin Peak Towers. Since the apartment is still actively marketed in Indonesia, it is very important to have the right information posted in wikipedia, otherwise wikipedia can misled potential buyers. For example, there is no bars, restaurants, night club, fleet of Bentley available at Peak and a lot of existing buyers argue about the quality of the buildings (no Italy marble etc). I tried to change the content, but someone named Wandering Canadians, a wikignome always change the page back. Ironically, Wandering Canadians has a motto 'Keeping People Honest'.

I assume that Wandering Canadians is just ignorant / not knowledable about the property in Jakarta/Indonesia, eventhough possible that he is connected to the owner of the property.

Please make wikipedia honest. I have changed the page back but sure Wondering Canadian will change it back. Please stop dishonesty at Wikipedia.

PS: BTW, I tried to contact Wandering Canadians directly but not successful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.158.104.36 (talk) 01:14, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Please don't insult other editors; remember to stay civil at all times! :) Also, remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~).
Now, Wikipedia is not for advertising, so we should not be editing pages with potential buyers in mind. Coverage should pertain to notability only, and should not focus on meaningless aspects. Of course, if there is misleading information, you are welcome to correct it, but only if you can prove that the information is false (and, vice versa, that yours is correct) using reliable sources. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 01:21, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also please note that we are an encyclopedia, not a directory, listing of organizations, or a place to advertise. There is also a very strict policy about only putting in what can be found in reliable, third-party sources. Along with that, there is a guideline/policy which states that if you are editing Wikipedia to promote some non-Wikipedia entity's interests (including yourself or other Wikipedia editors), you have a conflict of interest with Wikipedia. Our goal is to build an encyclopedia. Please keep this in mind while editing. Other policy/guideline/how-to pages you may be interested in seeing are: the notability policy, how to write your first article, and the tutorial. Hope this helps... Calvin 1998 (t-c) 01:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason why your updates to the article have been reverted is because they were (to quote from the The Peak Twin Towers article history): "... non-factual and incorrect additions, suspected vandalism" and "... not in accordance with Wikipedia standards or style", or they "... belongs on talk page". The usual practice when adding controversial material to articles, is to cite verifiable information from reliable sources. If other editors disagree with your edit, then perhaps you can raise the problem on the article's talk page and try to reach a consensus with the other editors. Continuing to add your unreferenced information is considered vandalism and will be quickly removed, and you may eventually be blocked from editing. If you wish to contact an individual editor, it is best to do so on their talk page (for example User talk:Wandering canadian), but please remember to remain civil at all times. Deletion of Chetan Ramlu

      Hi There

I have already re-derected the page Chetan Ramlu to Kris Chetan Ramlu. But I would like to delete the Chetan Ramlu page alltogether so there is just the Kris Chetan Ramlu page. The original Chetan Ramlu page was re-directed by a Chetan ramlu page - as you can see this is getting really messy. So if someone could delete the Chetan Ramlu and Chetan ramlu page but leave the Kris Chetan Ramlu page, I would be very greatfull.

      Thanks

Rich —Preceding unsigned comment added by Richardbetts (talkcontribs) 09:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it would be a good idea to delete the redirect "Chetan Ramlu" since it has a number of incoming links that would be broken by deletion; similarly (although less so) for "Chetan ramlu". As the saying goes, redirects are cheap and it doesn't hurt to have these alternative versions of the article title around. BencherliteTalk 10:08, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed double redirect at Chetan ramlu. As Bencherlite has said, it's probably best to keep both redirect pages, since both have incoming links. haz (talk) 10:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can't request deletion like that. The subject appears to be notable and therefore it is here to stay. You could try taking it to WP:AFD, but I don't think its deletion will be the outcome. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 11:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Manchester Academy of English Wikipedia article does not exist to "publish about" your company, but is an encyclopedia article about a notable subject. Your earlier concerns about not wanting your "... rivals/competitors to make changes to the text to sabotage our reputation" would appear to be unfounded because the article has not been controversially edited since it was created by your "IT assistant". Via Upload file on the toolbox on the left. But first, you must read Wikipedia:Image use policy. Thankyou, Lradrama 11:49, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also note that you must be logged in before you can upload files. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 11:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If the image is free, such as something you created or took yourself that you will be releasing, please don't upload it here. Instead upload it to the Wikimedia Commons (a central media repository for all free media). By Creating an account there and then uploading, you allow use of the image here as well as on all other language Wikipedias and all of Wikimedia's sister projects. Also note that if you do not have an account here and you create one now to upload, you will have to wait four days and have 10 edits before you wil be able to do so, whereas you can upload immediately at the Commons, once registered. Referencing

      Hi,

I'm having problems adding references/external notes to articles. I've followed the instructions, but to no avail. I guess I'm doing something very minutely wrong, but I'm at a loss. I tried following the 'cite references' section on the Help Page. But like mentioned above, it didn't work! Could someone please give me a 1,2,3 track approach, or simplify it so a six year old can understand!!

      Many thanks.

      Theblako (talk) 18:08, 4 June 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Hi there. All you have to do is, after a fact, use <ref> URL here </ref>, and then add {{reflist}} to the bottom of the page. There are ways of formatting the references, notably {{cite web}}, but that's pretty advanced. Hope this helps! Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 18:11, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)*I looked at the article you were recently editing. You did everything exactly right, but forgot to add {{reflist}} to the reference section. That template causes the references to display. I've fixed it, so feel free to take a look! TNX-Man 18:14, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the print so small on 'printable version'?

      Resolved

      Hi...

When I print out an article from the 'printable version' page, the text is minuscule and basically unreadable. My solution has been to cut and paste the text into a Word document and print it from there. But...a lot of the formatting gets lost.

Is there a way to print the 'printable version' with larger text?

I am on a PC with Windows XP and use Mozilla Firefox.

The printer is an HP Laserjet 4050N. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.122.183.11 (talk) 18:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      What browser are you using? What printer? --—— Gadget850 (Ed) talk - 18:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On Firefox, select "Print Preview" under the "File" menu. At the top of the screen in the center, you'll see a "Scale" dropdown. Odds are this is set to a very small number. Select something at or closer to 100%. This should increase the font size in the printed copy to something closer to what you want. -- ShinmaWa(talk) 20:04, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beautiful. It was set to 'shrink to fit'. Now it's printing fine. Thank you very much, Shinmawa! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.122.183.11 (talk) 20:21, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
