Abd al-Aziz ibn Uthman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abū s-Saqr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUthmān al-Qabīsī ( Arabic عبد العزيز بن عثمان أبو الصقر القبيصي, DMG Abū ṣ-Ṣaqr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUṯmān al-Qabīṣī ; † 967 in Aleppo ; Latinized: Alchabitius, Alcabitius and Alkabitius ) was an Arabic astrologer and mathematician of the 10th century.

Live and act

Died in Aleppo in 967, no dates of birth have been passed down from Alkabitius, his Latin name. What is certain is that he lived and probably also worked in Mosul for several years . Most recently he was apparently at the caliph's court of Sultan Saif ad-Daula in Aleppo. Alkabitius' introduction to the art of star interpretation developed into an extremely widespread astrological work from the High Middle Ages to the Renaissance . Furthermore, his preoccupation with the problem of the so-called astrological horoscope houses made him known.

His work was translated into Latin by Johannes Hispalensis and commented on by Johann von Sachsen in 1331. This made Al-Battani's daybow method known to the West. In addition, there are (three) German transmissions from the 14th and 15th centuries.
