Ásmundur Guðmundsson (born October 6, 1888 in Reykholt (Borgarbyggð) , † May 29, 1969 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran theologian . He was Bishop of Iceland from 1954 to 1959 .

Life

After studying theology , the son of the pastor and provost Guðmundur Helgason was head of a school in Eiðar in East Iceland . As early as 1917 he tried to get a lectureship at the University of Iceland , which he finally received in 1929. In 1934 he was appointed professor . From 1951 to 1953 he was in charge of the state university lottery. On 30 January 1954 he was in the cathedral consecrated by Reykjavík bishop. He remained head of the Icelandic State Church for five years until 1959 . In June 1954 the University of Iceland awarded him an honorary doctorate .

Ásmundur Guðmundsson was married to Steinunn Sigríður Magnúsdóttir and had seven children with her.
