Ásta Ragnheiður Jóhannesdóttir (born October 16, 1949 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician of the Social Democratic Alliance and former Speaker of Parliament .

Ásta studied social sciences and English at the University of Iceland from 1969 to 1973 . From 1969 to 1972 she also worked as a flight attendant at Loftleiðir and as a DJ . She then worked, among other things, as a high school teacher , for many years in program planning for radio and television for the Icelandic radio Ríkisútvarpið and as a tour guide for Icelandic people abroad. From 1990 to 1995 she headed a department of the national social security office.

Ásta was initially a member of the Progressive Party . In 1995 she was elected to the Icelandic parliament Althing for the People's Awakening party , which had split off from the Icelandic Social Democratic Party . She belonged to this until 2013, since 1999 (merger of the People's Awakening and Social Democratic Party with other parties) for the alliance . She initially represented the then Reykjavík constituency, and since 2003 the Reykjavík-South constituency .

From February 1 to May 14, 2009 she was Minister of Social Affairs . Ásta has been President of Parliament since 2009. On July 23, 2012 she was awarded the Icelandic Order of Falcon (Commander) for her work in the service of the community .
