location

Architecture and history

The complex dates back to the Middle Ages and consists of a massive, three-storey, plastered residential tower and a two-storey residential building built in 1477 on the west side of the tower in half-timbered construction . The building is oriented in an east-west direction, the upper floor protrudes. On the framework there are carved beam heads in the shape of cylinders as well as ship throats . It is the oldest secular building in Gernrode. The building is not far from the old castle site and the later monastery grounds, with which it was historically related.

There is a vaulted cellar in the house, which is believed to have originally served as a storage cellar for the monastery brewery. An underground passage led to the monastery, which was later filled in. The building served as a monastery courtyard and was converted into a farmyard in the 15th century.

Currently (as of 2014) there is a gastronomic use.
