Medical quality management

The Medical Quality Management is a part of medical activity and deals with quality management and quality assurance in the medicine and health care . This is also an additional training for doctors (additional designation) beyond the training or specialist training.

Additional medical training

After the (model) advanced training regulations passed by the German Medical Association in 1992 required that specialists have to provide evidence of knowledge and experience in the field of quality assurance in their field, an additional designation was added in the course of the last amendment to the (model) advanced training regulations in 2003 "Medical quality management" has been introduced.

The additional advanced training "Medical Quality Management" covers the basics for continuous improvement of structures, processes and results in medical care. The aim of the additional training is to acquire the technical competence in medical quality management after completing the prescribed training time and training content as well as the training course. The competencies acquired can be documented in the (sample) logbook on the additional training course "Medical Quality Management" .

The further training time is 200 hours of further training in accordance with Section 4, Paragraph 8. It can be completed at recognized further training institutions.

Course content (as of 2007)

The content of the additional training is the acquisition of knowledge, experience and skills in

  • the methodology of quality management in healthcare
  • the application of health economic concepts including the assessment of cost-benefit relationships
  • the presentation and application of quality management models
  • the basics of evidence-based medicine
  • the moderation of quality processes
  • the evaluation of quality assurance procedures
  • the implementation and verification of compliance with medical guidelines
